GTR-DVD-1137 - Located between China and India, Kathmandu is a metropolis in the heart of the kingdom of Nepal, a land of snow-white mountains and home of the gods. It was only a few decades ago that ancient Nepal opened its borders. Until then, due to the command of the ruling Gurkha Dynasty the 'Home of the Divine' was totally isolated. In the heart of the city is Durbar Square in which the country's royalty resided until 1908 and also where the region's most important festivals take place. The Shiva Parvati Temple dates back to the early years of the Shah Dynasty and its five sectioned, portal-like frame contains inscriptions that are thought to be the oldest in the Nepalese language. The large Jagannath Temple is dedicated to the god, Krishna, and to fend off the prudish Goddess of Lightning sexual images adorn the edge of the roof. Built above an impressive array of steps the mighty Talejk Temple overshadows each of the other temples. The architecture of this 'mountain temple' emphasises the unique importance of the goddess Shiva. Kumari Chowk is the residence of the living goddess Kumari. For this role a young girl is duly selected and is disallowed from leaving the palace until puberty, her task being to affirm the king his power. The customs of the people in this 'Kingdom on the Roof of the World' may seem strange to those from beyond its borders but this land of both jungle and everlasting snow has developed according to its own rich traditions and beliefs. Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.

7DY-DVD-101 - Egypt is a land of monumental temples, gigantic pyramids, the River Nile and the mysterious Sphinx: 5000 years of history.Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra's spell. Cairo is Africa's largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun.Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world's largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today's modern city of Luxor, known as the 'Capital City Of The Pharaohs', the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple.67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

7DY-DVD-102 - Kenya, 'Kingdom of the Golden Sun' and home of the safari, is one of the world's most fascinating tourist destinations, with its amazing contrasts of jungle, desert, water, snow-covered peaks and green hills.Nairobi features several leisure parks plus the National Museum which offers a good overview of the country's history. The Carnivore Restaurant is also worth a visit and features the many varieties of meat that are to be found in Kenya, cooked to perfection! One of the many lakes in The Great Rift Valley is Lake Naivasha, on the shores of which Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness, and her cubs, for the film, 'Born Free'. Lake Nakuru is home to countless thousands of birds and British ornithologist Peter Scott referred to it as 'The largest ornithological spectacle on Earth'. Lake Bogoria is favoured by tens of thousands of pink flamingos, attracted to the many kinds of algae created by the lake's mineral content. The animal-rich Masai Mara, what could be glibly described as 'Hollywood's idea of Africa', is home to the tall and proud Masai people who live in small villages known as, Kraals. It also accommodates the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. Crocodiles and hippos also lurk. At the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro is the Amboseli National Park, it's savannah not only abundant with elephant, but also a spacious backdrop for the spectacular Masai Mara game reserve...just one part of the kaleidoscope that is Kenya.

7DY-DVD-103 - Bali - island of the gods and gateway to Paradise -- is a relatively small island, east of Java across the Bali Strait, one of 17,000 Indonesian islands. In recent years, luxurious hotel complexes have appeared, tastefully re-creating the island's ethnic traditions. The capital of Bali, Denpasar, is the commercial centre of the island with good shopping facilities and a fascinating variety of entertainment. Colourful dance and drama play an important part in the lives of the Bali people and almost every village has its own dance group, the favourite dance being the Barong. In the north of the island, the 1800 metre high Gunung Batur volcano is still active and in the lat century has erupted four times, its slopes covered in lava fields, which extend deep into the crater. Hindu temples abound, the Pura Kehen being one of the most beautiful terraced temples in Bali and the Pua Besakih, the most revered. At sunset, hundreds of people visit the spectacular though small temple of Tanah Lot which is situated on the top of a volcanic cliff. As in ancient times, rice is still cultivated in the traditional way and ox and plough traverse the fields. Sun drenched beaches, cloud-kissed volcanoes, exquisite ethnic architecture and dreamy temples - it's no wonder that Bali is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in East Asia.
