7DY-DVD-103 - Bali - island of the gods and gateway to Paradise -- is a relatively small island, east of Java across the Bali Strait, one of 17,000 Indonesian islands. In recent years, luxurious hotel complexes have appeared, tastefully re-creating the island's ethnic traditions. The capital of Bali, Denpasar, is the commercial centre of the island with good shopping facilities and a fascinating variety of entertainment. Colourful dance and drama play an important part in the lives of the Bali people and almost every village has its own dance group, the favourite dance being the Barong. In the north of the island, the 1800 metre high Gunung Batur volcano is still active and in the lat century has erupted four times, its slopes covered in lava fields, which extend deep into the crater. Hindu temples abound, the Pura Kehen being one of the most beautiful terraced temples in Bali and the Pua Besakih, the most revered. At sunset, hundreds of people visit the spectacular though small temple of Tanah Lot which is situated on the top of a volcanic cliff. As in ancient times, rice is still cultivated in the traditional way and ox and plough traverse the fields. Sun drenched beaches, cloud-kissed volcanoes, exquisite ethnic architecture and dreamy temples - it's no wonder that Bali is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in East Asia.

7DY-DVD-104 - Known as the 'Pearls Of Greece', the Cyclades islands are located in the middle of the South Aegean Sea. The picturesque former pirate village of Myknos is a meeting place for artists, V.I.P.'s and the international glitterati and five old windmills dominate its picturesque bay. Cyclades villages are characterised by brilliant white houses with green, blue, red and yellow window frames and doors...and the deep rich blue of the Aegean. A special attraction is the district of Little Venice, the style of its buildings serving as a reminder of when the Venetians took possession of the island. Birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, Delos is known as the 'Pompeii Of The Aegean', its long since deserted temples, public buildings, houses and streets conjuring up the atmosphere of this once-flourishing cultural and trading town. Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades islands, with bubbling springs and gently-flowing streams, colourful fields and fertile valleys plus a wealth of water, fruit and vegetables. On Paros, the jewel of the Greek Orthodox church, Katapoliani, is the island's oldest and largest church and dates back to the 6th century. Legendary location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis, Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades islands, a breathtaking paradise of rock, lava, sea and light where survival has meant a constant battle against the forces of nature. Its unique dimensions are due to a natural disaster of devastating proportion when over 3,500 years ago a volcanic eruption sank most of the island beneath the sea. In places arid, in places fertile, but always a feast to the eye. Was it not the Greek god, Poseidon who threw a handful of rocks onto the seabed, which took root, and created...the Cyclades?

7DY-DVD-111 - Tunisa is a North African city with a long history. After the Hasfides and Osmans, the Spanish Moors came but then had to give way to French colonial rule until present day Independence. In the old town, there are more than 700 historic monuments which include 200 palaces, a colourful variety of buildings and numerous mosques.Among shoreline lava rock is the entrance to the Ghar El-Kebir, a collection of sandstone grottos. During Roman times, thousands of slaves were forced to bring building material for Carthage and El Djem from subterranean shafts. In Sousse, the simple fort of Ribat is probably the oldest Islamic building in North Africa, in which Muslim soldiers lived in monastery-like isolation and in the town's Archaeological Museum there is a fantastic range of mosaics, predominantly from Punic and Roman excavations. Gabes is an oasis town which overflows with luxuriant floral splendour. By horse and carriage visitors can travel through one of the most beautiful maritime oases in Tunisia where, under 500,000 date palms, tobacco, henna, pumpkins, apricots and bananas thrive. The focal point of important caravan routes and trading centre for goods from Libya and Black Africa, Medenine is a very charming and lively city. Its reinforced honeycomb-shaped caves were the extraordinary-looking buildings that many will recall from the film 'Star Wars'.The Sahara is the largest desert on earth, with different landscapes such as rock deserts, salt deserts and serene oases. Kebili is located on the edge of a huge salt lake and is a typical desert village with a green oasis and Artesian springs which provide water for its fruit and vegetable gardens. Nefta is also a green paradise in the desert, an oasis town that boasts no less than 152 Artesian wells. Dougga contains Tunisia's most important ruins which nestle in the hills among shimmering olive trees and poppy fields. Endless deserts and fertile oases, busy towns and isolated mountain regions, Roman temples and Muslim mosques: Tunisia is tempting!

7DY-DVD-113 - In the south of the country, the Algarve is the mainstay of Portuguese tourism with golden sandy beaches, bright red rocky coasts and a profusion of castles built by the Christian kings during the Moorish Wars.Faro is the capital of the Algarve and today its huge old city wall indicates its past importance. Close to the Baroque cathedral, the attractive centre of the old town has been well preserved and indicates the town's historic and dazzling past.Lisbon is the heart of Portugal and is located on the massive Tejo Bay. The Marques De Pombal rebuilt the city after it experienced the most devastating earthquake ever to hit a European town when only the plain, pointed arches of the Carmo Monastery's distinctive roof withstood the catastrophic earthquake. Baixa is the name of the lower city from which a lift ascends to the heights of Bairro Alto from where there are amazing views across the rooftops of the old town of Alfama. 'Electricos' are Lisbon's quaint and unique trams which squeak and roar through the old town, travelling along the narrow streets and up and down the hills. The Torre De Belem once guarded the approaches to Lisbon's harbour. Shimmering white like a fantastic mirage, the city's most famous landmark is located on the shores of the Tejo. It was from here that ships crews were bid farewell as they set out on their long voyages of discovery. The town of Sintra is situated on a forest slope on the Sierra De Sintra. Its mild climate and proximity to the capital city led the kings of Portugal to build their summer palaces here and there is an abundance of grand residences and palaces each surrounded by beautiful gardens and tropical plants. Located atop a tall rock is the Palacio Da Pena, a pseudo-fantasy castle which dates from the Middle Ages. The long bridge over the River Douro was built by Gustave Eiffel and is in the form of a huge arch constructed solely of iron and from which, on two levels, it connects the town of Porto with Vila Nova De Gaia.Portugal is a country of churches and cathedrals, massive fortresses, magnificent castles and prosperous towns. The sunshine and glorious coastline are mere bonuses!

A place of both inspiration and contemplation. Since Phoenician times the earlier 'Malaca' was a busy trading port that was defended by the Castillo De Gibralforo. The Cathedral, also known as 'La Manquita', symbolises a catholic victory on the former site of a mosque. On the edge of the city centre is the Moorish fortress of Alcazaba that was once a fortified residence on the hills of Castillo. The second largest city in Andalusia also became known as the birthplace of its famous son, world famous artist Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Since the 1950's the modern coastal resort of Torremolinos has attracted mass tourism with a numerous variety of huge hotel skyscrapers, bars and restaurants. In the hilly inland area of the Costa Del Sol is the pretty white mountain village of Mijas. A small hilltop bullfight arena shines bright white along with the houses ofthe surrounding area. Marbella, the prima donna of the Costa Del Sol, serves as a rendezvous for the stars of stage and screen and a leisure resort for the international jet set. Another short excursion into the mountains near the coast leads to Casares, a sleepy mountain village crowned by the ruins of a Moorish Castle. 7DY-DVD-139 - Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodekanissa, a group of Greek islands located in the south eastern Aegean just off the west coast of Turkey. Since antiquity its special location has brought it both power and wealth. On the northernmost tip of the island is the fascinating metropolis of Chora Ródos whose harbour entrance was once adorned by the Seventh Wonder Of The World, the Colossus of Rhodes. Byzantines, Arabs, The Knights Of The Order Of St. John, Ottomans and Italians each influenced the ever-changing history of the island that was first settled here in 400 B.C. In 1320 the Knights Of St. John discovered an old fortified town here and immediately began to expand its fortress into the Grand Master Palace. In its present form the building is a reconstruction of the original palace that was first built on the site of a temple for the Sun King, Helios. After a total of seven Christian crusades were unable to defeat Islam and the re-conquering of Jerusalem failed, the Knights Of the Order Of St. John were driven out of Palestine. First they sought shelter in Cyprus and next conquered the island of Rhodes that was then under the rule of Portuguese pirates. To protect themselves from the Turks as well as from the pirates the new owners of the island built several mighty fortresses. Filérimos is located on the island's west coast close to the city of Rhodes. An avenue of pine trees leads to a huge concrete cross. Petaloúdes, The Valley Of Butterflies has for many years been a popular attraction for tourists who usually arrive in organised groups. A creek that contains water throughout the year flows through a narrow valley and forms romantic waterfalls, cascades and small pools. At the foot of Tsambika Mountain there's a small church, one of many that are scattered across the island. The Greek Orthodox Church and its nuns, monks and patriarchs have helped to preserve the region's language and culture. Rhodes is an island that bewitches all who experience it.
