VPG-DVD-112 - MONTREAL Canada's second largest city, Montreal is a fascinating blend of European charm and the American way of life. In Vieux-Montreal, narrow lanes and small houses recall the past and also the lifestyle of the original settlers. In the old fire station at Place D`Youville - one of the oldest markets in Montreal -- is the Centre D`Histoire in which the 350 year cultural history of the city is on display, from the development of the Irokese Settlement, its prolific fur trade, and right up to today's shining, energetic Metropolis. Although Montreal is located 1600 kilometres from the open sea, it owes its wealth to its waterways which stretch from the country's interior, to the ocean. A trip on the Saint Laurence River with the pleasure boat, BATEAU-MOUCHE, contrasts old, historic warehouses with the highly contemporary apartment block of the Cite Du Havre Habitat. Le Tour Olympique, Montreal's " Crooked Tower", offers panoramic views which extend more than 80 kilometres from its 175 metre tall viewing platform. Next to the Olympic Stadium, the Biodome, in which exotic animals from many corners of the world roam among waterfalls and tropical forests. Next to the gleaming skyscrapers of the inner city, there are museums, churches and art galleries and, in the old quarter, there are more historic buildings than in any other North American city, not forgetting the parks and the romantic harbour. Montreal is a gem!

SMP-DVD-23505 - Oregon Lighthouses The Silent SentinelsOregon lighthouses are the longest standing legacy of the state's maritime history. They have weathered more than a century of ferocious storms. Their lights continue to shine brightly, guiding mariners through treacherous waters. The men and women who tended the lights seldom received recognition for their efforts. Many times storms forced the keepers to turn the prisms by hand until the first rays of morning light when repairs could be made.Seven of Oregon's lighthouses are open to the public, thanks to the many volunteers, public agencies, Native American Indian Tribes and non-profit organizations who are preserving this heritage. We will also visit interpretive and discovery centers along the way. Our guided tour of Oregon lighthouses will give you only a glimpse into their historic past. The rest, is for you to discover.

OTT-DVD-128 - Our journey through Lan Na, the 'Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields', begins in the historically rich city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Built in the 14th century, Wat Phra Singh is situated in the historic centre of the city and is one of Chiang Mai's most important religious sanctuaries. Apart from its wealth of historic architecture the city is also well known for its popular arts and crafts, especially its colourful cotton and silk umbrellas. The cultivation of rice has been known in Eastern Asia since 3500 B.C. Even though the majority of Thai rice farmers are poor, their work is much respected. Work in the paddy fields is hard and the daily life of the rice farmers is influenced by the seasons and particularly the weather. Even today, water buffalo are frequently seen pulling the traditional water wheels that assist in the irrigation of the land. Mae Hong Son is a notorious town as it is situated close to the infamous Golden Triangle, one of the largest opium producing areas in the world. On the shores of the town's small lake are several beautiful sanctuaries such as the Mon temple of Wat Chong Klang built according to traditional Burmese design. Those who venture out onto the dark streets of Mae Hong Son early in the morning can witness the daily life of this colourful community. The large amount of local produce and specialties is not only fascinating but also quite tempting and a feast for the eye as well as the soul! The impressive cultural diversity of the mountain people and the beauty of nature make a journey through the former kingdom of Lan Na a truly unforgettable experience.

GTR-DVD-1130 - The ancient Minoan site of Agia Triáda on the Greek island of Crete owes its name to a nearby church that dates back to the 14th century. In many ways the settlement is quite unique as its architecture does not conform to traditional Minoan design. In contrast to the much larger structure of the Phaistos Palace that is situated only a few kilometres away, the site has revealed an abundance of fascinating treasures. Agia Triáda's famous objects and works of art are contained in the Egypt Museum in Íraklion. In around 1400 B.C. the Minoan culture came to an end and the exact reason for the decline of this advanced civilization will probably never be known. The Minoan culture reached its peak between 1700 and 1350 B.C. when palaces, country houses and settlements were established throughout the length and breadth of the island. Due to the completion of a well thought out road system and the further development of existing harbours, the foundation of an extremely successful trading system was created. For thousands of years the Minoan ruins lay covered by the sands of time and it was only as a result of excavations around the neighbouring Phaistos Palace that brought about their discovery. The Mycenean civilisation replaced that of the Minoans and they subsequently constructed their own buildings above the walls of the once splendid and flourishing settlement of Agia Triáda. It is an incredibly wild and beautiful corner of Western Australia. Broome was once the prosperous and bustling centre of the pearling industry. Broome stands on Roebuck Bay and is still a pearling town but not in the scale of years gone by.In its hey day there were some 350 pearling luggers employing 3,000 men working out of Broome.Divers went to depths of 27 meters and this resulted in many deaths. There was a predominant amount of Japanese divers and the Japanese Cemetery shows how they suffered. There are many signs of the Pearling background of Broome with abandoned Luggers and Museums. We take you to Gantheaume Point, where dinosaur's tracks are embedded in sandstone at the base of the cliffs and it is commonly believed they lived 130 million years ago.
