VPG-DVD-151 - EL GOLFO DE CALIFORNIA Larger than Italy and twice as long as Florida, the Baja California is a huge peninsula at the southern end of California on the western border of the Golfo California. A few drops of rain in this region are enough to make the soil explode with life and transform the land into a vast undulating ocean of green palm trees and fruit-bearing cacti. Remote haciendas interrupt the savannah-like landscape with estates so vast that it's necessary to travel across them by motor vehicle. The Barranca Del Cobre is four times larger and ninety metres deeper than the Grand Canyon. Powerful torrents of water created the region's deep canyons and its igneous stones were subjected to powerful erosion thus creating bizarre rock formations. At a height of thirty-five metres the Cusárare Waterfall is an impressive sight as its magnificent crystal clear water plunges down into the deep abyss below. This part of Mexico located on the Tropic Of Cancer divides the country into two climatic zones of the same size: temperate and tropical. El Golfo De California and its contrasting deserts, arid mountain regions and lush vegetation is a wonderfully remote landscape whose unique beauty captures the imagination of all who experience it.

OTT-DVD-125 - The journey through the active volcanic landscape of Iceland features many breathtaking sights. Reykjavik, also known as 'Smokey Bay', is one of the smallest and cleanest capitals in the world and the northernmost capital on the Planet. Many of the houses of the Old Town are protected monuments such as its oldest building that dates back to 1751. The fishing industry plays an important role in Iceland's economy and accounts for around eighty per cent of its export trade. Whale watching is the ideal way to experience the giants of the deep, mainly mink, humpback and fin whales. The Blue Lagoon is the country's most popular bathing location with turquoise water at a temperature of 40°C surrounded by lava and its water so full of minerals that it has a healing effect. With its many glaciers, volcanoes and rivers Iceland is an Eldorado for those with an interest in geology. The mighty Gullfoss Waterfall hurls down into the abyss below while the Skógafoss, one of Iceland's highest waterfalls, plunges sixty metres across the cliffs. With its numerous waterfalls Iceland is well endowed with large natural energy reserves. Vik is located in a picturesque valley and although the winds there are extremely fierce the village is a popular starting point for walking trips. Measuring 8,300 square kilometres, the Vatnajökull Glacier is the largest in Europe. Remarkably, each of Europe's other glaciers would fit within it. Iceland is a land of geysers, volcanoes, lava deserts, waterfalls and green meadows. A natural fantasy of water, fire and ice!

OTT-DVD-112 - On Tour... ELÉCTRICOS DE LISBOA Tram Rides In Old LisbonELÉCTRICOS DE LISBOA In the capital of Portugal, Lisbon's hilly old town is wonderful to explore on its historic trams, the Eléctricos, a living museum that soon changed the travel routine of Lisbon's population. In August 1901 the Eléctricos were introduced and the first electric line was inaugurated. Little has changed since that time and the original rolling stock has been in use to the present day, the electric motors and magnetic brakes of the small twin-axel 'carros' providing amazing acceleration and excellent brakes. The Sé Patriarcal Cathedral dates back to the 12th century when it was constructed on the site of a mosque at the command of Portugal's first king, Alfonso Henriques. Within its inner courtyard there is a unique Roman iron balustrade and the remains of columns that contain ornate reliefs. Excavations in the courtyard reveal the remains of walls that date from Phoenician and Roman times. The Moorish knights' castle, the Castelo de Sáo Jorge, is located above the Baixa district. In 1300, the 110 metre high castle mound was transformed into a royal palace in which, up to 1511, the kings of Portugal resided. As the journey continues, most of the carriages groan and rattle through the alleys, shake and clatter on the bends, and inch by inch stagger up the hills in streets so narrow that the houses appear to touch each other. The Torre De Belem is regarded as Lisbon's emblem. Its battlements and lighthouse, built in Manuelistic style, were for many years the state prison. Today it contains the King's Hall and Governor's Room. Originally, the Torre was located in the centre of the deep Tejo but changes in the flow of the river brought it closer to the land. The prison was housed in the lower sections and as the water level rose, prisoners were forced to stand waist-deep in water. There's a lot to see in Lisbon and its atmospheric Eléctricos make the tour just that little bit more special!

NPM-DVD-151 - When viewing the Kalahari from the air it is soon clear that in spite of its arid appearance it does not only consist of desert terrain. Indeed, its extensive and dry savannah is home to a variety of vegetation zones and a surprisingly large number of plants and animals. Covering an incredible two point five million square kilometres the Kalahari extends across more than nine African countries. In the north it borders the Zaire Delta and in the south it stretches between the Atlantic and West Zambia. The largest area of the Kalahari is situated in Botswana, one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. With less than three people per square kilometre it is hardly surprising that it is such an isolated region. Amid the African wilderness we arrive at a luxurious lodge that is surrounded by several beautiful old trees, Deception Valley Lodge. A few years ago the owners of the lodge came to an arrangement with the nearby members of the San tribe that some of them would act as guides for their guests. The Bushmen of the Kalahari have a long and proud history and it is believed that the first settlement of the ancestors of the San was established here around a hundred thousand years ago. The bushmen accompany us on our trip into the desert that is also their home. Nobody knows the mysteries of the desert better than the San tribesmen. For thousands of years their knowledge and experience has been handed down from one generation to the next. Without the knowledge gained from their ancestors it would be impossible to meet the challenge of everyday life in the desert. A walk through the dry savannah provides outsiders with a hint of the tough way of life of the bushmen. The Kalahari is most certainly not just another African desert: it is a very unique world of its own!

NPM-DVD-104 - Nature Parks ETOSHA NamibiaYear after year, Namibia's Etosha National Park attracts thousands of visitors. Approximately 22,000 square kilometres in size, Etosha is a special wildlife experience and its magnificent flora is unique among all the other wildlife parks in Africa. It also has the reputation of being one of the major wildlife sanctuaries for a wide variety of Africa's animal species, such as antelope, zebra, springbok, giraffe, lions, gnu, hyenas, gembok, elands and kudus. Apart from the desert-like area of the Etosha Salt Pan, the park consists of Mopani Woodland and Savannah Grassland and also a large number of acacia trees. The few precious water holes are an important and vital meeting place for many kinds of animals and ideal for observing wildlife in its natural habitat. The history of the impressive Namutoni Fort dates back as far as 1851 when explorers set up camp next to the Namutoni Spring. The fort was completely renovated in 1983 and today it is one of the national park's three camps that offer overnight accommodation. Although most Namibia's major roads are covered with asphalt, the roads inside the national park often consist of loose gravel, or even sand, and are called, 'Pads'. The desert-like Etosha Pan is a place of timeless tranquillity, a flat saline desert, 130 kilometres long by 50 kilometres at its widest point. Close to Namutoni, Fischer's Pan is well known for its excellent variety of different bird species, among them Namibia's national bird, the crimson-breasted Shrike. In other words, the Etosha National Park is a nature lovers' paradise!

GTR-DVD-1251 - Around seventy kilometres west of the Libyan capital of Tripoli are the remnants of an ancient city that has been in ruins since ancient times. As with Oea and Leptis Magna, Sabratha was one of the last large trading cities of the former Tripolitania. A re-constructed theatre that could accommodate an audience of five thousand is the ancient city's most impressive building and dates back to the second century B.C. It was built by the Romans whose cultural influence on Sabratha lasted for several centuries. Several baths, among them the Thermal Salt Water Baths on the coast, give an insight into the high living standards of the city's former inhabitants and trade with the farmers of the surrounding region helped to make life in the town extremely pleasant. In the seventh century A.D. the city was conquered by the Arabs. However, they selected another Tripolitanian metropolis as their capital city. Thus the once-glorious Sabratha fell into decay and lay forgotten for several centuries. Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. GTR-DVD-1113 - Its unique location is not the sole reason that the picturesque town of Lindos has become known as one of the most fascinating locations on the Greek island of Rhodes. Its narrow, intimate lanes are flanked by centuries-old houses, the former residences of captains, ship-owners and wealthy traders. During the Ottoman period Lindos was one of the country's most important ports and it still has a strong association with the sea as do the cultural treasures of this enchanting town. Lindos' famous landmark, the Acropolis, is located above the town. The Acropolis was important not only for those of ancient Greek religious belief but also for those of the Christian faith. According to legend the apostle Paul came ashore beneath the temple in 51 A.D. Its shoreline location as well as the beauty of the town plus its combination of medieval buildings and ancient ruins all add up to why Lindos is such a popular destination. Lindos was once a great maritime power that possessed its own colonies in the Mediterranean and the enchanting atmosphere of this special place can still be experienced today. GTR-DVD-1051 - The Russian flag still waves proudly above the roof of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the former Winter Palace of the tsars. However, despite the meaning of its French name it is no longer a place of seclusion. Designed by Rastrelli and built between 1754 and 1762, today the Hermitage is the centre of an art museum that consists of several buildings. The impressive Peter Hall is dedicated to the legendary founder of the Russian Empire, Peter The Great. Indeed, it is a remarkable work of art in its own right and both the Parade Stairs and Jordan Stairs are fine examples of the Winter Palace's dramatic architecture. The purchase of more than two hundred paintings from Berlin formed the basis of the Russian aristocracy's passion for art and served as the catalyst for the subsequent museum. Works by the most famous Italian artists, including Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raffael, have their own splendid exhibition rooms within the Eremitage. In addition to its remarkable works of art, the museum also contains a large number of archaeological discoveries and artistic treasures from entire cultural epochs. The Hermitage is an art museum of the superlative. It contains a total of 2.7 million exhibits many of which are the finest examples of their kind. The Hermitage, the former Winter Palace of the Russian tsars and today the greatest museum in Russia, is a veritable palace of outstanding art and history. GTR-DVD-1151 - One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. In the 13th century King Louis The Ninth was in search of a suitable location for a harbour on the Mediterranean that would serve both trade and military purposes. The Aigues-Mortes region was far from ideal as it was a swampland on which it was almost impossible to build, however, the orders of the King had to obeyed! The seventeen hundred metre long town wall consists of ten gates and five defensive towers, a true masterpiece of mediaeval architecture.King Louis The Ninth and his army embarked from Aigues-Mortes to conquer the Holy Land for Christianity and in 1246, two years before the king's crusade to Egypt, the town's inhabitants began to prepare the machinery of war for this great adventure. However, the crusade was unsuccessful, the king having been taken prisoner. Even so, this was not to be his final military expedition and following his liberation and return to France he was encouraged to mount a new crusade in 1270, one which he did not survive. The harbour also suffered a terrible fate: it silted up! Thus the town's inhabitants experienced a difficult period in their history. But thanks to its splendid town wall Aigues-Mortes still manages to capture the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.
