VPG-DVD-114 HABANA La Habana, capital of Cuba, the Caribbean metropolis that for many decades has been so little loved and so badly neglected, with breathtakingly restored beauty alongside unbelievable ruins - the queen of the Antilles in a country that lies between sun and socialism, between Rumba and Revolution! As early as 1553, the Spanish Conquistadors chose Havana's harbour as a rendezvous for ships that traded gold and silver in its colonies and, to protect this 'Gateway To The New World' from attack by looters, several forts were built, the oldest of which being the Castello El Morro whose construction took more than two decades. As standards of living progressed, pirates and buccaneers came here and repeatedly destroyed parts of the growing town but each time they did so it was rebuilt and improved. La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway's local drinking place and nowhere else is the ‚Mojito' mixed better: three year old white rum, lime juice, soda, sugar, ice and mint. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi House, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia and when the Daiquiri is served one almost expects Fidel Castro to be seated at the next table! The Nacional Hotel, which was built in 1930 with Mafia money and once accommodated prominent people from the film and business world, exudes nostalgic dreams of unmitigated pleasures. A city whose riches once seemed boundless, La Habana now rests in sleepy magic waiting to be discovered once again.

VPG-DVD-136 - CUBA Basking in the Caribbean sun, the island of Cuba lies between sun and socialism, rumba and revolution. Havana is the capital. In 1553, the Spanish conquerors designated Havana's harbour as a collection point for ships loaded with gold and silver from the new Spanish colonies and named the settlement, San Cristobal De La Habana. La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway`s local and nowhere else is the 'Mojito' mixed better. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi House, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served, one almost expects Fidel Castro to be sitting at the next table. Pinar Del Rio is a small but busy town in which the Red Star and portraits of Che Guevara are on display for all to see. In the old town, colourful houses with beautiful pillared corridors demonstrate the former wealth of the country's independent tobacco growers. A visit to a tobacco factory is a must. Cuba's cigars are world famous. Together with sugar, tobacco is the country's most important export. The oldest geological formation in Cuba are the Mogotes, well-weathered limestone peaks that, supported by pillars, once covered a large complex of caves. On seven manmade islands in the centre of the Cienaga De Zapata National Park, is the Indian village of Guama. This swampy nature reserve with its dense mangrove forest vegetation is an ideal sanctuary for many rare water birds. Legend has it that the Siboney Indians sunk all their possessions in the Laguna Del Tesoro to protect their gold from the Spaniards. No Cuban town has changed as little in two hundred years than that of Trinidad. In the 18th century, the city experienced great wealth and recognition due to the cultivation of sugar cane and the luxurious palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city. Rich green tropical forests, tobacco country at the foot of mysterious mountain caves, humid tropical swamps, history, cigars and rum. Cuba is a colourful cocktail.

NPM-DVD-105 - Nature Parks EVERGLADES FloridaThe Everglades Nature Park is located in the far South East of Florida and covers an area of around 3,500 square kilometres. Beyond the protection of the park, the neighbouring swamps are a major fascination of this region. The textures of the landscape are both rugged and soft and its infinite waterways and riverbanks conjure up a strong sense of adventure. There are alligators, racoons, pelicans, heron, ibis, and two hundred and seventy-five species of fish including the manatis - a docile sea cow that weighs well over a ton - as well as more than four hundred species of bird. There's a replica of an original Miccosukee Indian village that has been transformed into an historical museum and the tiny settlement also contains a variety of well-stocked shops with an array of traditionally crafted Indian products. An unusual vehicle that seems to be related to a tractor, but a more elevated version, is an ideal way to journey through the thick mud of the swamp, passing racoons and even alligators along the way. Numerous legends surround these mysterious, natural swamps, and some of the faces of its natural inhabitants - alligators, racoons and birdlife - reflect the stories and history of this unique, highly atmospheric and fascinating nature park.

RIH-DVD-MYA - Myanmar AdventuresMy 10 day car tour of Myanmar, or Burma, began in Yangon in March 2004. We traveled from Yangon to Bago, Taungoo, Inle Lake, Pindaya Caves, Mandalay, Mt. Popa, Bagan, Paya with a return to Yangon. I saw several temples, called payas where worshippers came to make offerings. Around Inle Lake, I saw local markets, stilt villages, factories and craft shops and lots of leg rowers traveling about. I attended a puppet show in Mandalay and a dated performance in Yangon.

7DY-DVD-125 - Haiti is the starting point of this journey in the Caribbean. Since the time of Columbus it has been the European idyll of paradise set amid a distant ocean. But beyond the dream is the fact that its original inhabitants were wiped out and replaced with African slaves. Now independent states have gradually emerged from the dark shadows of an inglorious past. They inhabit a tropical world, an exotic Caribbean island that consists of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jamaica is another Caribbean paradise and its second largest city, Montego Bay, is the starting point for tourists from all over the world. Harmony Hall is the name of an immaculate manor house situated on a turn of the century plantation and James Bond Beach was once the winter retreat of English author Ian Fleming. Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and the island's political, economic and cultural centre, a former pirate stronghold that is a lively mixture of joie de vivre and reggae. Nassau is the capital of New Providence Island and is one of more than seven hundred islands in the Bahaman archipelago. It is visited by huge cruise liners that can seen from everywhere as they overshadow the city's buildings and on each side of its tranquil streets the city's pastel coloured houses look like something from a confectioner's shop.Next, Havana, the Caribbean metropolis that for many years has become somewhat run down and neglected. But nowhere else are the cocktails mixed better! Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi house, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served one almost expects Fidel Castro or Ernest Hemmingway to be seated at the next table! Finally, Trinidad, where time seems most definitely to have stood still! Cuba and the Caribbean, a melting pot of colonial culture and an overgrown and abundant Garden of Eden.
