VPG-DVD-229 - LAPLAND Finnish Lapland is a region of around ninety four thousand square kilometres covered by forests and marshland, similar to Swedish Lapland. The local inhabitants live in harmony with nature and the six thousand five hundred Sami people have managed to preserve their unique landscape right up until the present day. Rovaniemi is a modern and lively main town in northern Finland and the gateway to Lapland. The famous Arktikum Museum provides a comprehensive insight into life in the Artic Circle. Two large rivers, the Ounasjoki and the Kemijoki, meet in Rovaniemi from were lumberjacks and gold prospectors once embarked upon their pioneering adventures. Today the city is a centre of tourism. Pajakyla is the home of Santa Claus and is open throughout the year. In the Arctic Circle eight kilometres north of the city is a special attraction that attracts six hundred thousand visitors each year: several tiny log cabins contain Santa's work rooms and a number of his helpers in traditional Lap costume offer a variety of colourful arts and crafts. In Lapland each season of the year has a special charm. The summer months are warm, in autumn the leaves shine out in golden yellow and in winter the landscape is covered with snow and ice. The hilly landscape of the large Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border and its treeless slopes make it one of the most popular winter ski resorts in Finland. Lapland is a land of countless myths and legends where remoteness, adventure and romance have managed to survive and where the power of nature is still very much alive.

NPM-DVD-107 - Nature Parks MASSAI MARA KenyaThe Massai Mara Nature Reserve is the most famous and most visited nature and game reserve in Kenya. Ninety-five varieties of mammals roam its paradise-like terrain and for bird lovers there are around five hundred different species. An estimated 1.4 million gnus live on the reserve and in addition there are around 550,000 gazelle, 200,000 zebra and 64,000 impala. The nature reserve offers visitors comfortable furnished accommodation, Massai style, plus a range of fascinating safaris. At the beginning of the dry season in July and August, the gnu's annual migration from the Serengeti takes place when, with a tumultuous din, countless thousands of animals fight their way through river torrents until they reach the lush vegetation of the Massai Mara. The Massai exist by breeding cattle and throughout the year these semi-nomads move through the savannah seeking out fresh pasture for their herds. The Massai live in 'kraals', low, igloo-shaped huts erected only by the females of the tribe and made from twigs, grass and a mixture of cow dung and mud. The huts are divided into a children's room where the young Massai spend the night with new born calves and lambs, and also a combined living and sleeping area that is also used for cooking. Crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, hyenas, lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants: this nature reserve is home to all of them. The most species-rich savanna grassland on Earth, and its legendary wilderness, provide a fascinating glimpse into a wonder world of nature, a remarkable harmony of wild animals and wonderful landscapes beneath huge African skies. Africa's largest wildlife spectacular gives its visitors an abundance of exciting adventures and countless unforgettable moments

RIH-DVD-MYA - Myanmar AdventuresMy 10 day car tour of Myanmar, or Burma, began in Yangon in March 2004. We traveled from Yangon to Bago, Taungoo, Inle Lake, Pindaya Caves, Mandalay, Mt. Popa, Bagan, Paya with a return to Yangon. I saw several temples, called payas where worshippers came to make offerings. Around Inle Lake, I saw local markets, stilt villages, factories and craft shops and lots of leg rowers traveling about. I attended a puppet show in Mandalay and a dated performance in Yangon.

GTR-DVD-1050 - MOSTEIRO DOS JERÓNIMOS MONASTERY OF JERONIMOS In the Lisbon quarter of Belém the vast Hieronymit Monastery, the Mosteiro Dos Jerónimos, covers an area of 300 metres. At one time its beautiful facade was situated close to the banks of the Tejo and it is no accident that the monastery was built in this location. King Manuel The First wanted the monastery to highlight the importance of religion for the sea-faring nation of Portugal at the beginning of the 16th century.Henry The Sailor donated the tiny Maria Chapel that was the first structure within the actual monastery area. Together with his father, King João The First, he led a fleet of 200 ships to victory against the North African harbour town of Cueta. Portugal was a mighty sea power. Courageous voyages of discovery led to the development of trade on newly discovered continents and along with his loyal sailors the world famous discoverer, Vasco Da Gamma, prayed in the Maria Chapel of Henry The Sailor prior to his ocean-going adventures. Ribbed Gothic vaults support the ceiling of the church that dates back to the 16th century. Coloured glass windows create a breathtaking spectacle of light. In addition to various important members of the Portuguese royal family and numerous religious leaders, it is also the final resting place of Vasco Da Gama. The monastery's richly decorated facade still shines out with all the glorious lustre of Portugal's courageous seamen and their remarkable voyages of discovery.
