GTR-DVD-1224 - Located close to the coast, the former Taiwanese capital of Tainan is both historically and culturally one of the country's most fascinating cities. Fort Provintia dates back to the time when the Dutch ruled the city. In the 17th century the fort was located on the waterfront and in those days passing ships were strictly observed. The Kuang Kung Temple is the tallest 'war-god-temple' in Taiwan. The present buildings were built at the beginning of the 18th century although the foundations were built much earlier. Tainan also contains the oldest Confucian temple on the island. The sanctuary and its adjoining school were founded in 1665 and were gradually extended. The majority of the buildings date back to 1715 when the temple site, built according to unique Ming design, was further developed. The fascinating cultural heritage of the historic city of Tainan is still very much alive today in its numerous temples, ancient monuments and magnificent works of art. GTR-DVD-1044 - The 4000 year old ruins of the Minoan Palace of Phaistos are scattered over a wide area of a picturesque hillside on the island of Crete. The first archaeological excavations took place between 1900 and 1909 and it soon became evident that these ruins, as well as further discoveries of the Minoan Epoch that date from around 1900 B.C., were the remains of the first highly developed culture of Europe. The multi-layered ruins and walls of the palace as they appear today are similar to the numerous cultural influences of ancient Crete. Libyan Megalith constructions with large limestone blocks combine with the wood, quarry stone and clay plaster of the semi-timbered buildings. Unlike classic Greek architecture, the Minoan constructions are not dominated or influenced by strict symmetrical lines. The facades of the buildings were given little importance by the people of Crete who instead focused on comfort and luxury from within, a fact demonstrated by the discovery of baths and a highly developed drainage system. No one could have foreseen that the once prosperous Minoan culture that left its traces in Phaistos would later be considered by historians to be the beginning of Europe's cultural development. GTR-DVD-1187 - Twenty kilometres east of the large Dutch port of Rotterdam is an exceptional and captivating landscape of windmills, Kinderdijk. For many centuries the windmills played an important role in the drainage and subsequent reclamation of land in the Netherlands. Up until the 19th century there were more than ten thousand windmills in Holland and even though only a fraction of them still exist they are still an important resource. The nineteen windmills in the Kinderdijk area were built in the 18th century along the waterways of Lek and Noord. In the past the sails of the redundant windmills were used as a means of communication: the position of the sails indicated if there was reason to celebrate or to grieve or if the operators of the mill had taken a short break. The traditions of the Dutch windmill are still kept very much alive by several millers keen to continue the rich heritage created by previous generations. 7DY-DVD-154 - Taiwan, the Beautiful Island or, 'Ilha Formosa': a land of gods, spirits and temples - an island at the end of a rainbow! This south east Asian island is separated from the Chinese mainland by the Formosa Strait that at its narrowest point is a hundred and thirty kilometres wide. Taipei is a pulsating metropolis in the north of the island in which emperors' treasures and chaotic traffic highlight both industrial strength and a Chinese way of life. In the old town district of Wan Hua is the city's oldest and most precious Buddhist temple of Lungshan Szu, the Dragon Mountain Temple. The Sun Yi Sen Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the centenary of the founder of the Republic of China. His efforts brought about the abdication of the last emperor and the birth of the Republic Of China. The Confucius Temple is a place of contemplation and is a replica of the Temple Of Qu Fu, Qu Fu having been the home town of Confucius. This silent place is one of five temples in Taiwan dedicated to the great Chinese philosopher, Confucius, the founder of a religion that even today has many followers. The past importance of the former Taiwanese capital of Tainan is indicated by the city's many temple complexes that contain an abundance of sacred works of art. Religion still plays a central role in the daily life of the people and the Tien Gon Temple is the most important temple in Taiwan. Taiwan is an island full of magical charm, fascinating works of art and breathtaking natural wonders. The legacy of Confucius mixed with the bright hope of the future. A symbiosis of industrialisation and Chinese tradition. The success of capitalism confirmed by the eternal words, "Made in Taiwan"!
