NPM-DVD-133 - The Petrified Forest National Park is located in Arizona in the USA. Long ago the region was covered by a dense forest and mighty rivers cut across the terrain. Water caused by heavy flooding forced dead trees to float to a low lying swampland. In the deep quagmire of the swamp and having, in effect, been hermitically sealed, the trees were subsequently covered by layers of sediment. Thus their further decomposition was halted. As the trees piled deeper and deeper into the swamp the petrification process began. Mud, sand and volcanic ash settled above the trees that gradually absorbed minerals from the surrounding moisture. Thus, hundreds of fossilised trunks developed that today are scattered across the prairie. Today, the Petrified Forest's formerly tall conifers are the most common examples of this stone world of plants that dates back to prehistory. The numerous colours of the pure quartz and various other varieties of the "stone trees" are quite remarkable and in stark contrast to the bright blue of the mostly cloudless sky. Most impressive is the millions of years old geologic phenomenon of the stone forest in the southern region that is situated only two kilometres from the entrance to the national park. In the Long Logs area that is located close to Giant Logs, there are hundreds of thousands of fossilised specimens. There are around three hundred archaeological sites in the park that range from small discoveries that have uncovered items of clay, to the incredible Pueblo dwellings of the Anasazi Indians. The Petrified Forest National Park combines the majestic brilliance of its petrifaction with the rugged beauty of a colourful desert. It is, without doubt, a unique masterpiece of Nature.

NPM-DVD-127 - The Mesa Verde National Park is located sixty kilometres from the small town of Durango in the U.S. State of Colorado. Various spectacular vantage points are located along the park's winding road, such as that of Park Point which at 2,613 metres above sea level is the highest section of the park and makes the panoramic view across the extensive desert foothills of the Rocky Mountains seems almost endless. Unlike most national parks in North America, and despite the magnificent rock and stone formations of the region, the observation of Nature is not the main reason that most people visit the park as the Mesa Verde is where the origins of an advanced North American civilization are to be found. The oldest traces of this region's human habitation date back almost twelve thousand years when for several centuries the Native Indians lived on top of the high plateau. At that time, the Indians possessed no building skills thus the Anasazi Indians lived within large, natural caves. Created and inhabited by the Anasazi, the impressive cliff dwellings of Spruce Tree House were most likely established in the 12th century. Steep cliffs still show traces of climbing and the ancient paths of the Anasazi and ceremonial buildings such as the Sun Temple were most likely the result of amicable communication between the neighbouring villagers of the canyons. Square Tower House at Navajo Canyon was probably built between 1200 and 1300 A.D. during the latter period of the Anasazi civilisation. The highest vantage point of this settlement is situated close to the main road. With a total of eighty rooms and seven ceremonial areas known as Kivas, this is one of the region's most remarkable cliff dwellings. Although the Anasazi civilisation that once lived among the canyons of Colorado were forgotten for many years they now enchant and fascinate people from around the world. Compared to other national parks in North America, the Mesa Verde unites the beauty of Nature with the unique remnants of a remarkable period of human history.

npm-dvd-136 - There are few places in the USA that, like the Canyon De Chelly, are both a national monument of Indian culture and at the same time contain a magnificent rocky landscape that attracts the serious as well as the most casual lover of Nature. The nature reservation's rocky terrain is formed by two long arms of land that consist of the southern Canyon De Chelly and the northern Canyon Del Muerto. This rocky landscape is located in the northeast of Arizona and in the middle of Dinétah´s heart, ancient Navajo Indian territory that today contains their reservation. Since the beginning of the 11th century, during the most important time of their culture, the Anasazi Indians built dwellings in numerous locations of the river valley. One of the most popular and historic rock settlements and archaeological areas of the Canyon is the White House, thus named due to its stark, bright appearance. These buildings are remarkable architectural examples that date back to the historical epoch of the Pueblo Tribe, between the 12th and 14th centuries. An array of smooth, eroded sandstone walls decorate each of the reservation's valleys. However, although less frequent, more spectacular are the free standing rocky peaks such as Spider Rock. Such impressive moments reveal the magnificent beauty of the Canyon De Chelly, the sacred territory of the Navajo Indians and in the bright, burning glow of sunset, both sky and earth become as one.

GTR-DVD-1110 - An architectural and historical gem lies hidden in the Mesa Verde National Park in the State of Colorado in the United States Of America. The dwellings that were built into the cliffs by the Anasazi Indians have given this place the name of, Cliff Palace. They were discovered in1888 by two cowboys who must have been amazed when they stumbled across these ancient and magnificent structures. During the 6th century the Anasazi settled on the Mesa Verde Plateau where they lived in caves and simple wooden shelters. They began by building their dwellings from loam bricks until, in the latter part of the 12th century, they created their cliff dwellings. The amazing dwellings amounted to entire villages located in the cliffs. The technical building abilities of the Anasazi Indians, although simple, were remarkable because although the buildings were constructed with sun-dried loam bricks and extremely primitive tools, they were able to build multi-storey buildings and small towers. Nearly 800 years have passed since the sudden and inexplicable disappearance and emigration of the Anasazi. Thankfully, their fascinating Cliff Palace dwellings in the Mesa Verde National Park have managed to survive the centuries. GTR-DVD-1039 - The impressive Mesa Verde National Park in the USA contains numerous centuries old Indian rock settlements including the remarkable Balcony House. The climb to Balcony House has always been an arduous task and within the entire area of the Mesa Verde no other Indian pueblo settlement is as well preserved. The unique quality of its brickwork indicates the past presence of a highly developed community that probably lived here until the end of the 13th century. For several centuries the forty-five rooms of Balcony House remained unoccupied and the families who had formerly inhabited them, the Anasazi Indians, left without a trace. The buildings have managed to survive due to the dry climate, the inaccessibility of their location and the nature of the materials used in their construction. In contrast to the earlier culture of the Basket Weavers, discoveries from the Late Pueblo epoch indicate that the Anasazi had a strong sense of community and were not afraid to make contact with neighbouring tribes. The effect of these cultural exchanges is evident on the various images and patterns of their pottery. Protected by mighty rock walls in the midst of magnificent and untouched canyons, the remains of this fascinating Pueblo culture have managed to survive the passage of time. The Bonneville Salt Flats are located next to Great Salt Lake, a huge area covered by salt that is one of the flattest areas in the world. The lake was once used for motor sports and on the Salt Flats racing drivers in rocket-shaped cars attempted to beat one land speed record after the other. 7DY-DVD-105 - Arizona, land of cowboys and Indians and Wild West towns plus, among its many natural wonders, the all pervasive colour red as displayed by the awe-inspiring rock formations of its mighty canyons. A thousand years ago the highly-cultured Anasazi and Hohokam Indians lived here, planting maize and vegetables in the meagre valleys and building walled towns into the cliffs of the canyons. They used the natural environment, protected caves in natural rock walls, which were accessible only by simple wooden ladders. For the past century, scientists from all over the world have investigated evidence that a gigantic meteorite crashed here, leaving behind it a huge crater: Meteor Crater. As the central and inner walls of the crater are similar to the landscape of the moon, preparation and training for the APOLLO space missions took place here. Located in North West Arizona is the 378 square kilometre National Park known as the 'Petrified Forest' with a surrounding desert which shimmers in all the colours of the rainbow. There's the Agate Bridge, a huge fossilised tree trunk which spans twelve metres wide across a gorge and the amazingly beautiful Canyon De Chelly. Situated in the Navajo Indian Reservation, the Betatakin Ruins are the remains of historical dwellings which were carved into the rock by their original inhabitants from the 13th Century B.C.Wild West fans instantly recognise Monument Valley where, between colossal, 300 metre tall monoliths and sky-high rocky needles, John Wayne and countless other screen heroes fought off Indians and battled with 'baddies'. A natural sculpture formed from undulating waves of stone, Antelope Canyon is a palette of colour which teases the eye. From the surface, a gaping crevice is the only means of access, tempting the curious to enter. In bold contrast, the Grand Canyon is 1,600 metres deep and 16 kilometres long, the most colossal gorge in the world. The sight of this gigantic natural wonder is the exciting climax of any trip to the magnificent and majestic land of Arizona.
