VPG-DVD-110 - VENICE The historic lagoon city of Venice stands on several islands joined together by a multitude of bridges, and a canal system in place of streets. The palaces that lie along the Grand Canal represent Venetian power and influence over the centuries. Gothic building artistry and Baroque affluence meet head-on in this grand and noble city which overflows with nostalgia. Less than an hour by boat from Venice and a visit to Burano, where fishing and lace-making prevail and Murano, famous for its glass-blowers. Three golden centuries of peace and prosperity made Venice into a glamorous, fairytale city like no other. 120 churches, 400 bridges -- this watery landscape is without equal. The 11th century Basilica Di San Marco, known as the 'Golden Basilica', is supported by 2,500 granite and marble pillars and, lined by buildings of many different eras, the Piazzi Di San Marco is surely one of the most famous squares in the world. And there's Carnival, too...a chance to wear a mask of Casanova, as well a good excuse for food and wine. Napoleon described Venice as 'Europe's most beautiful meeting place'. He was right!

VPG-DVD-148 - VILLE DE QUÉBEC On behalf of the French crown, in 1608 Samuel De Champlain established a fur trading post from which originated Québec, a city that today looms over the Saint Laurence River like a majestic fortress. It is the birthplace of French culture in North America. With its small towers and green glimmering roofs the Chateau Frontenac majestically watches over the city. The castle like hotel was built and lavishly furnished in 1894 by the Canadian Pacific Railway and in 1943 was the rendezvous for the allies who met to prepare for the Normandy Landings. Québec's upper city is encircled by a four kilometre long fortified wall that was alternately built upon by the French and the English. In former times, various gates barred entry to the fortress but today they are wide open and welcome visitors into the well preserved old town. Designed by master builder Baillairgè in 1844, La Cathedrale Notre Dame De Québec was Canada's first Catholic cathedral. The Baroque dome of the basilica demonstrates the splendour of Catholic Church design while the altar captivates with its rich detail and paintings of the Holy Mother. The Funiculaire connects the upper city with the lower, the Quartier Petit Champlaine that was the country's first settlement. The train station looks like a mediaeval castle and its large hall seems to be the grand entrance chamber of a palace. The station's anterooms contain huge windows while its ceilings display colourful glass images. Canada's oldest city has successfully retained its deep and historic roots and has sensitively linked them to the needs of the modern world. Québec is truly a sparkling gem of French culture in North America.

VPG-DVD-211 - GRAZ Graz is the capital of Austria's federal state of Styria and in 2003 was designated as Europe's Capital City Of Culture. Indeed, due to its geographical location, for many centuries Graz has been a melting pot of culture. The Schlossberg Mountain towers above the city and in 1894 a rack railway was introduced in order to overcome the severity of its 60 per cent gradient. The Romans and Celts once used the mountain as a place of ritual ceremony and today small pathways and pavilions make the mountain more accessible. In the 12th century a medieval castle was built on the plateau and in 1531 it was transformed into a mighty fortress that served as a defense against the Turks. With nearly 32,000 exhibits that date from the 15th to the 19th centuries the Zeughaus contains the largest collection of historic weaponry in the world. The often-extended Grazer Burg was once the residence of the Hapsburgs. One of its towers contains a unique double spiral Gothic staircase constructed of sandstone that shines out magnificently in a wonderful array of colour. The entire complex, along with each of its numerous building styles and adjoining park, is now the seat of Styria's provincial government. Located on a hill to the north east there is another fine example of Baroque architecture, the Maria Trost Basilica. In the 17th century those who sought help and consolation climbed two hundred and fifteen steps to a Gothic Madonna who was thought to possess miraculous powers. Within the interior of the church and its colourful wall and ceiling mounted frescos, there are also various scenes of battle. Graz is a city in which the artistic and architectural styles of the German-speaking nations, the Balkans and the Mediterranean are united. It is a remarkable city of age old traditions, mediaeval flair and contemporary life.

VPG-DVD-156 - CAIRO Cairo is a world metropolis and tantamount to being an open-air museum. The Nile divides it in two and the centre of the city contains modern shops and office buildings in close proximity to medieval churches and ancient mosques. The Khan El Khalili Bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, A Thousand And One Nights amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutenkhamen and Nofretete are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colourful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices. Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatimaic times. It was built on the ruins of an even older church in the Coptic district of Cairo. The three-aisled basilica was founded by Roman Christians at the end of the 4th century. Built in 1902, the Egyptian Museum's one hundred and fifty thousand exhibits amount to being one of the greatest historical collections in the world. When both the Greek and Roman civilisations had reached the zenith of their power, Egypt already had a history that dated back almost three thousand years. In 1830 King Mohammed Ali had a mosque built and named it after himself but it is now more commonly known as the Alabaster Mosque. It was eighteen years in construction and was built on the site of a former Mameluckan Palace. Egypt and its capital of Cairo is the oldest cultural land on Earth. A country that impresses with both its five thousand years of history and lively modern spirit.

TMT-DVD-123 - LEPTIS MAGNA Northern Libya was once where the dramatic history Leptis Magna was created, an ancient metropolis that was the first and thus the oldest Phoenician settlement that formed part of what was later known as Tripolitania. The remains of this city are typically Roman. The second century A.D. brought new prosperity when Septimius Severus, who was born in Leptis Magna, became emperor of the Imperium Romanum. At that time monumental buildings were constructed whose beauty and size was only surpassed by those in Rome itself. The ruins of the very large Severian Basilica highlight the amazing architectural skills of the master builders of those days. The Forum was also built at the time of Septimius Severus and today it is the most imposing area in the ancient city. Artistic Medusa and Gorgon heads adorn the remains of a restored arcade in the Forum.. The city's Amphitheatre that was once the scene of bloody gladiatorial battles and wildlife savagery, also possesses its own special ambience. Leptis Magna was an important port for the export of wild animals from Africa's southern regions, such as elephants, lions and leopards. For many years Leptis Magna was lost to history until it was rediscovered in the twentieth century when it once again revealed much of the magic of its truly glorious past.

GTR-DVD-1038 - The area of land in which Rome's famous Forum Romanum is located was once an overgrown swampland. Many ancient relics are scattered around what was once the heart of the mighty Roman Empire that for so long dominated Europe.Since the beginning of the 3rd century, the majestic and impressive Septimus Severus Arch has maintained its function as an architectural expression of triumph. Within the interior of the Kurie with its two side pedestals, was the seat of the Roman senate in which there was room for three hundred senators who had been democratically elected by the people. Huge buildings such as the Maxentius Basilica, named after the emperor, Constantine, are still recognizable today. It was only at the beginning of the 19th century that interest in ancient Rome returned with well-organised archaeological excavations. From 1898 archaeologists worked their way through to the oldest and deepest foundations and with these new discoveries the ancient character of the Forum Romanum as the centre of the Roman Empire was returned to the glorious light of day. GTR-DVD-1069 - Little is known of the exact history of the ancient ruins of Sbeitla and few documents exist of the seminal years of this old Roman city. However, some of the buildings and ruins are exceptionally well preserved such as the Antonius Pius Arch, a main entrance gate to a large forum. The temples are a curiosity and run contrary to the normal architectural style of Roman temples, which customarily unite the gods Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, as these temples are located in three separate buildings. Sbeitla can be thought of as a classic example of efficient Roman construction and street planning that made little reference to the conventional design characteristics of the period. Excavations that were undertaken between 1907 and 1922 uncovered an area of ruins of approximately 600,000 square metres. At least seven religious sites date back to the Christian period of the fifth and sixth centuries. It is thought that the three basilicas that lie beyond the temples were built on the foundations of former Roman temples. Even today the excavation of this extensive area has not been completed as it is believed that two thirds of this ancient city has still to be discovered. GTR-DVD-1192 - The shining white basilica of Sacré-Coeur towers above Montmartre and across the famous Parisienne art district of the same name. It is located on a hill that is thirty metres high and provides a good view of both Paris and the River Seine. The magnificent basilica on top of Montmartre Hill can be seen for miles and is synonymous with Paris. Beneath Sacré Coeur is the former winegrowers´ village of Montmartre that, at the end of the 19th century, attracted several important artists. Montmartre's exotic nightlife also gave it a special appeal and venues such as the Moulin Rouge have become world famous. Despite the district's commercial aspects even today Montmartre possesses its own unique charm and a good measure of the atmosphere of bygone times. Even at night Sacré Coeur dominates the skyline above Paris' vast ocean of colourful lights and thus confirms it to be one of the most striking and best known landmarks in Europe. GTR-DVD-1062 - During the Middle Ages, Venice was the most powerful trading metropolis in the Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean and also a mystical place with a fascinating charisma.Several times a year the sea penetrates the city and overflows onto the Piazza San Marco in which the Basilica, with its Oriental and Byzantine influences, is an impressive sight. Famous personalities such as Casanova and Cagliostro lived in Venice and their decadent lives made a unique contribution to the city's historic reputation. Standing proudly above the Grand Canal is the world famous Rialto Bridge that is supported by 12 thousand pillars and measures 48 metres long and 22 metres wide. The most prosperous of the city's families erected their palaces on the city's canal banks and the foundations of these buildings are supported by thousands of pillars. They also donated lavishly furnished churches and promoted the arts, thus artists such as Giorgione and Tizian became world famous. In earlier times, gravediggers travelled on black veiled gondolas to the small island of San Michele. Flickering lights on wooden poles still illuminate the way to the island cemetery. The humidity of the soil forced the Venetians to bury their dead in the honeycombed alcoves of cemetery walls. During carnival time, the city takes on a special charm when, for ten days prior to Lent, enchanting, colourful costumes and masks dominate the lagoon city. During carnival the melancholic splendour of past centuries awakes and each year the extravagant spectacle attracts large numbers of tourists from all over the world. For mystical delight with a good serving of history, Venice is without equal!
