VPG-DVD-114 HABANA La Habana, capital of Cuba, the Caribbean metropolis that for many decades has been so little loved and so badly neglected, with breathtakingly restored beauty alongside unbelievable ruins - the queen of the Antilles in a country that lies between sun and socialism, between Rumba and Revolution! As early as 1553, the Spanish Conquistadors chose Havana's harbour as a rendezvous for ships that traded gold and silver in its colonies and, to protect this 'Gateway To The New World' from attack by looters, several forts were built, the oldest of which being the Castello El Morro whose construction took more than two decades. As standards of living progressed, pirates and buccaneers came here and repeatedly destroyed parts of the growing town but each time they did so it was rebuilt and improved. La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway's local drinking place and nowhere else is the ‚Mojito' mixed better: three year old white rum, lime juice, soda, sugar, ice and mint. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi House, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia and when the Daiquiri is served one almost expects Fidel Castro to be seated at the next table! The Nacional Hotel, which was built in 1930 with Mafia money and once accommodated prominent people from the film and business world, exudes nostalgic dreams of unmitigated pleasures. A city whose riches once seemed boundless, La Habana now rests in sleepy magic waiting to be discovered once again.

NPM-DVD-118 - Nature Parks DEATH VALLEY NevadaSituated in the USA, Death Valley derived its name during the gold rush that took place between 1848 and 1849, a time when hordes of pioneers journeyed to the west full of hope but where, in the seemingly never ending and merciless hot desert valleys, many frequently lost their cattle, their wagons and some even lost their lives. During the summer months the temperatures in Death Valley often exceed 45 degrees Celcius. A closer look confirms that Death Valley is an arid, desolate desert valley in which any visit should be treated with respect as the severe, unforgiving heat can prove fatal to those who travel unprepared. Badwater is the deepest point in the western hemisphere and is located 86 metres below sea level. The area that contains the so called 'bad water' is on the border of a wide salt lake of which the water content is tantamount to a small pool. In a wide valley close to Badwater in the region of the Panamint Mountains, there's a further major attraction, The Devil´s Golf Course on which bizarre crystal formations cover large areas of a dried out ocean. Around 1000 A.D. the ancestors of the Shoshone Indians settled in this region, their largest village having been located at what is known today as Furnace Creek. One of the most famous and certainly most photographed areas in Death Valley is the hill range of Zabriskie Point, undoubtedly the most beautiful and spectacular observation point in the unique rock and desert landscape of South West California. Scotty´s Castle was the inspiration of two men from Chicago, an insurance millionaire named Albert Johnson and a legendary gold digger, Walter Scott. During the 1920s they built a magnificent hacienda that cost over 1.5 million dollars and today it provides an atmospheric impression of the realisation of an incredible dream. Even today, the timeless and breathtaking scenery of Death Valley continues to turn the famous myths and legends of the 'Wild West' into amazing reality.

NPM-DVD-147 - In the south west of the state of South Dakota is a mysterious-looking landscape that is rugged, sparse and a surreal-looking desert of rock that is colourfully known as the Badlands. For around five hundred thousand years the forces of wind, air and water have gradually shaped the mighty rocks that appear like huge walls across the Badlands. In some places the rock walls look like miniature mountains and everywhere one looks there are fascinating rock formations. In addition it is the many colours contained within the rock that also focus the attention. Conversely, the Badlands Prairie features a large variety of grasses that are only to be found in this region of North America. Between the scattered rocks are a total of fifty six varieties of grass that combine to form an ecological system that is unique in the world. Paleotologists also benefit from the weather beaten terrain of South Dakota as the south west region also features several fossil excavation sites. Remains of the original ancestors of the horse, the Mesohippus, have been discovered in the Badlands as well as the petrified bones of carnivores such as the Creodonten and various now-extinct turtles. Badlands may be its name but in no way does it describe the unspoiled magnificence of its truly unique and spectacular scenery.

GTR-DVD-1211 - Lush green surrounds the historic buildings of the remote farm settlement of Glaumbaer deep in the north of Iceland. Glaumbaer's turf houses were built in the late 19th century but the origin of the farm dates back far longer. Many of its stone structures were built by the Vikings who lived in the region during the 11th century. As was common in most of Iceland's former farming communities, Glaumbaer contained several buildings that were located around a central building. The 'badstofa' served as a working, living and sleeping space and was also the location of the communal kitchen, one of the most popular places to be in the harsh cold of winter. In addition to the important archaeological finds that have recently been made, the former ancient community of farmers and Vikings that once lived here no doubt still contains many a secret yet to be discovered. Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. GTR-DVD-1093 - Surrounded by the attractive provincial mountain landscape of the Alpilles there is a romantic mediaeval town high on a rock, Les Baux-De-Provence, located 400 metres above the Crau Valley. The historic origins of the village date back to the first millennium A.D. Located in the lower, busier part of the town, the Saint Vincent Church dates back to the 12th century and it is an atmospheric setting for famous Christmas performances such as the Shepherds´ Midnight Mass. Archaeological discoveries and precious works of art are to be found in the Musée D´Histoire De Baux that also serves as the entrance to the upper part of the town. In times of freedom the country's finest troubadours gathered in the town's now ruined castle. Immortalized by a monument, the farmer poet, Charles Rieu, is considered to have been a fine exponent of this age-old tradition. However, in1483 the art of the troubadour grew silent and was replaced by the sound of battle when the powerful catapults of Ludwig The Eleventh destroyed large sections of the castle. Like no other village in the Alpilles, Les Baux-De-Provence has long been the centre of this region's glorious history. GTR-DVD-1244 - The ruins of the Crusader castles of Jordan serve as a reminder of the bloody battles that once took place between the Christians and Moslems and that shook the Near East at a time in history known as The Crusades.Around four kilometres from the small town of Ajlun is Jordan's sole surviving castle, Qalaat Ar-Rabad. It was designed to protect the pilgrims who were on their way to Mecca but was also a symbol of military power aimed well and truly at the Crusaders. The year 1115 marked not only the victory of the Crusaders at the Battle Of Tell Danit but also the beginning of Shoubak's construction. After a siege that lasted eighteen months, Shoubak fell in 1189 to Ayyubiden. Shortly afterwards it was enlarged by the Marmeluccs and in the 19th century the Ottomans moved into the fortress. The most famous of the Crusader castles is situated in the city of Kerak around twenty kilometres southeast of the southernmost extremity of the Dead Sea. The fortress had great strategic importance as those who controlled Al Kerak also controlled large areas of Palestine and an area that extended to the southern section of the Dead Sea.Almost a hundred years after the conquest of the fortress the last French outposts in the Near East were also abandoned and today it is only the mighty and impressive ruins of the Crusaders that have survived: an atmospheric reminder of a glorious and colourful past.Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.
