These videos that I've been posting are from a holiday I took in August of 07. I spent some time in Hervey bay, on a boat, stalking the whales that visit the area. Having spent the winter in the Great Barrier reef, giving birth to their calves, they journey down the coast of Australia returning to the Antarctic for the summer. The vessel was the Moon Dancer, and a small group of us had paid to volunteer to help with the research undertaken by Trish and Wally Franklin PhD.The Oceania project is studying the transitory Humpback whale population in Hervey bay, Queensland, Australia. Anyone can sign up to help out with the research. This is the link if you're interested in more detail in what they are doing...http://www.oceania.org.au/expedition/founders.html

GTR-DVD-1158 - Suur, for thousands of years the mighty tower-flanked Istanbul Land Wall was vital for both the defence and further development of the city. The Byzantine emperor, Theodosius The Second, ordered the construction of a new and mighty fortification in 408 A.D.The fortress was built during the reign of Sultan Mehmet Fatih The Second. It was an architectural symbol of the defeat of Constantinople when following more than a thousand years of resistance the inhabitants of the city were forced to surrender to the Osmanic conquerors. The city's most influential dignitaries were imprisoned in the fortress and many perished within its walls. Even the region's sultans were executed there. The fall of the Byzantine Empire created a new flowering period in the city and today Istanbul's famous wall reaches from the Marmara Sea to the Golden Horn, the very long and narrow tributary of the Bosporus.Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. GTR-DVD-1200 - Most sightseers travel by boat to see the fascinating Wat Arun Temple that is located close to the shore of the Chao Phraya in the historic heart of Bangkok. According to legend, Wat Arun, The Temple Of The Dawn, existed long before the founding of Bangkok. King Taksin who reigned in the 17th century A.D. chose this sanctuary as his royal temple and also gave it its present name. The journey up to the higher sections of the sanctuary travels past several splendid images including various mythological and religious figures such as the Moon God, Soma. Over the years the temple was further extended and decorated and the central 'prang' of the building complex grew taller and taller. It symbolizes Meru, the Holy Mountain, upon which the Earth rests. The Hindu god Indra that rides on the three-headed elephant, Erawan, was also included in the impressive temple complex of Wat Arun. The main tower and magnificent décor of the buildings are one of the most famous sights inThonburi, the historical area of Bangkok. GTR-DVD-1168 - The Tower Of London is the home of the Crown Jewels and one of the many historical sights of the United Kingdom's capital city. Just as with the British Empire, the Tower has a colourful and dramatic past and it was originally designed as a fortress by William The Conqueror. Not far from the Tower's original main entrance prisoners were taken through Traitors' Gate into the notorious dungeons. In1843 the moat dried up but the old fortress and its towers have survived to the present day. It must have been a terrifying experience to be imprisoned there and few prisoners lived to tell the tale of the rigours of the Tower. Many members of the English royal family were executed in the Tower but there were times when official execution was replaced by cold-blooded murder. Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry The Eighth, was the most famous of those who fell victim to the Tower. Tower Bridge is a masterpiece of Victorian technology and construction. Its drawbridge once allowed large sailing ships to travel to the centre of the city. Today, however, the majority of large ships dock downstream and now the famous old bridge is raised around nine hundred times each year to facilitate the passage of numerous vessels that travel along the Thames. Even today the River Thames is ruled by this majestic bridge and the spectacular view from the Bridge's 50 metre high walkway is truly fascinating. Tower Bridge and the Tower Of London are without any doubt two of London's most striking and fascinating landmarks. GTR-DVD-1038 - The area of land in which Rome's famous Forum Romanum is located was once an overgrown swampland. Many ancient relics are scattered around what was once the heart of the mighty Roman Empire that for so long dominated Europe.Since the beginning of the 3rd century, the majestic and impressive Septimus Severus Arch has maintained its function as an architectural expression of triumph. Within the interior of the Kurie with its two side pedestals, was the seat of the Roman senate in which there was room for three hundred senators who had been democratically elected by the people. Huge buildings such as the Maxentius Basilica, named after the emperor, Constantine, are still recognizable today. It was only at the beginning of the 19th century that interest in ancient Rome returned with well-organised archaeological excavations. From 1898 archaeologists worked their way through to the oldest and deepest foundations and with these new discoveries the ancient character of the Forum Romanum as the centre of the Roman Empire was returned to the glorious light of day. GTR-DVD-1259 - The Jordan Desert contains several mysterious ruins including the legendary remains of the ancient castles of the Umayyad Monarchy. Qasr Al Mushatta is the largest of the Umayyad castles although it gradually fell into ruins and much of it was used elsewhere as building material. No other desert castle was built with such megalomania and it was designed as the winter palace of Caliph Walid The Second. Paved roads have now replaced the former caravan routes. Close to the southern Azraq Amman Road is the quadrate castle of Qasr El Kharaneh. This fortress like building is one of the most well preserved desert castles of the Umayyad and its massive external walls and corner towers give it an awesome appearance. The small bathing castle of Qusair Amra is one of the most beautiful castles in Jordan. Its bathing house uniquely highlights the abundant luxury enjoyed by the former monarchs of the desert. The castle features a number of magnificent and well known wall paintings that depict various bathing and hunting scenes. Today the happy-go-lucky nature of the Umayyad monarchy seems to be far removed from Islam. Indeed, some of the scenes are of a sensual nature. The castles of the Umayyad desert: history, atmosphere and romance! GTR-DVD-1258 - Scattered across a number of islands just beyond the capital city of Helsinki is one of the most famous and important architectural monuments in Finland, Suomenlinna, a mighty fortress that was built by the Swedes as up until the beginning of the nineteenth century Finland was part of Sweden. The Crimean War saw the first modern static warfare in history. In 1855 the war extended to the north east of Europe and a number of British-French ships fired on the fortress for three days. More than twenty thousand shots were fired from a thousand allied ordnances. The Suomenlinna Islands suffered terribly and more than half its buildings and military complexes were destroyed. During the subsequent Finnish War Of Independence a prison was built on one of the islands. After centuries of foreign rule, political turmoil within its neighbouring country brought Finland its much longed for independence. A tomb in the inner courtyard of the main complex is a reminder of the architect who created the remarkable fortress, August Ehrensvärd. The Suomenlinna fortress buildings are now one of the most visited historical monuments in the Helsinki region. GTR-DVD-1257 - Near to Vienna is a place where the sky meets with the earth. For almost nine hundred years the Stift Klosterneuburg Monastery has had a special relationship in the spiritual, sacred and cultural life of Austria. Its architecture dates back to the Baroque era and the rule of Emperor Karl The Sixth. In the twelfth century, church architecture was based upon Italian design. At that time a castle was also built at this location for the sponsor of the monastery, Leopold The Pious. In addition to its fine sacred architecture the Stift Klosterneuburg enchants due to its worldly side that can be seen in the emperor's private rooms which demonstrate the luxurious lifestyle of the Habsburgers whose influence was at its zenith during the reign of Karl The Sixth. The monastery's most valuable possession and also one of the most impressive works of art of the Middle Ages is the Verduner Altar that was named after the artist, Nikolaus Of Verdun, and was completed in 1181. The large quantity of precious works of religious art and fascinating historic objects that date from the Habsburger Dynasty underline the feeling that the Stift Klosterneuburg is indeed a place where the sky meets with the earth!
