OTT-DVD-134 - Amazing Voyage Along The Norwegian Coast - We begin one of the most beautiful sea journeys in the world in Bergen, an ancient seaport and trading town where we will be passengers on Norway's, 'Hurtigruten'. The Bryggen district was once founded by the German Hanse and is one of Bergen's most famous landmarks. The picturesque houses that once belonged to German traders make the charming historical district look more like an open air museum. The Ms Nordnorge is one of a new generation of ships that belong to the famous Hurtigruten Fleet and can take seven hundred passengers. At the mouth of the Nidelv in the Trondheimsfjord is the third largest city in Norway, Trondheim, an important trading and administrative centre. At the beginning of the thirteenth century Trondheim was a city of great influence and was also where the Norwegian kings of mediaeval times were crowned and although it gradually lost its political importance it still contains several fascinating buildings. From Trondheim the ship travels the century-old historic route north into Norway's most remote regions. Four and a half hours from Bodø and we arrive at the Lofoten, a fairy-tale group of islands in the North Atlantic. When the weather is fine we relax on deck, take in the fresh sea air and sunbathe while the ship glides through the water. A round trip through the historic town of Kirkenes marks the end of a wonderful journey through the fjords and coastal towns in the north of Norway.

OTT-DVD-140 - The fascinating journey on the famous Bergensbanen begins in Norway's capital city of Oslo which contains a large variety of interesting historic buildings that are well worth a visit. Indeed, the city originated in the middle of the eleventh century during the reign of King Harald Hårdråde. For almost a century Norway was part of Sweden and in 1905 a referendum put an end to its unpopular union and Norway achieved its Independence. The construction of the railroad posed a major challenge for the engineers of that time and its construction took many years. The first section of today's Bergensbanen was completed in 1883 and extended from Bergen to Voss. On its journey to Bergen the Bergensbanen travels across the highest plateau in Europe, the eight thousand square kilometre, Hardangervidda. At one thousand two hundred and twenty two metres above sea level Finse is the Bergensbanen's highest station and was opened in 1909 when Norway's King Hakon was one of the first passengers to travel on the new railroad. The journey on the Bergensbanen not only travels through one of the most charming and natural landscapes in Europe it also features the history of Norway: a unique adventure indeed!

7DY-DVD-156 - Norway is a fascinating land in the extreme north of Europe where both magic and fairytales are very much alive. It has crystal clear lakes and rivers, snow covered mountains, idyllic fishing villages and endless beaches that are only accessible by boat. Although the Norwegian metropolis of Oslo is a modern city it continues to be inspired by the lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. Oslo is a harbour town that lies well sheltered at the end of a fjord and in the ninth century it was much appreciated by the Vikings who travelled throughout the known world, plundering much of it! Bergen's main tourist attraction is the Bryggen district that originated in the middle of the fourteenth century when it was heavily influenced by the North German Hanseatic Office. The city not only boasts a fascinating history but also a number of music festivals and it was the birthplace of world famous composer Edvard Grieg. Trondheim is Norway's historic capital in which the country's kings have been crowned. The Nidaros Domkirke is the most splendid Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. It was built on the bones of Holy Olav. For several centuries it has been a place of pilgrimage and since the Middle Ages the Norwegian kings were crowned and also entombed within its walls. The small village of Nusfjord is located in front of a captivating backdrop of mountains. Due to its unique location it looks more like a high mountain village than a fishing settlement. It is both an historical as well as a cultural treasure. It is easy to understand why the descendants of the Vikings are so proud of their fascinating home in the extreme north. Norway, a country bursting with breathtaking and untamed beauty!
