VPG-DVD-216 - VALLETTA Valletta is the capital city of the Mediterranean island of Malta and is also known as The City of Palaces. It was once inhabited in turn by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Turks and in 1530 the Order of the Knights of Malta moved its main residence to this section of the island. Malta's pre-historic epoch is demonstrated by its primeval stone temples and graves. They belong to the Menhir period that extended to the British Isles. The St. John's Co-Cathedral was built in1577 by Gerolama Cassar as a monastic church of the Order of the Knights of Malta. At the command of Pope Pius the 7th, in 1816 it was designated as a cathedral and was given the same privileges as the bishop's seat in Medina, thus its somewhat strange title of 'Co-Cathedral'. Situated on the northernmost point of the peninsula is the famous Saint Elmo Fort, a dominant feature of the coast. Throughout the centuries it has been witness to many bloody battles and much courageous resistance. It reached its zenith during the time of the Knights of Saint John who expanded the fortress and made it almost totally impregnable. Its walls successfully fended off the Turks and later the French blocked off the harbour entrance to the British fleet. During the Second World War anti- aircraft artillery were positioned on the fort's upper levels to defend against both German and Italian bombers. The Orient and the Occident have both left their traces in Valletta a picturesque location carved from stone. The former City Of Knights in which the future joins with the past.

VPG-DVD-176 - JAMAICA Montego Bay is Jamaica's second largest city that, at the end of the 18th century, was one of the most important harbours for the island's sugar industry. The lively city centre is a mixture of both old and new with modern concrete houses located next to simple wooden huts and congested streets with numerous small shops and street traders. Close to Falmouth there's the excitement of Martha Brae River Rafting which is an excellent way to explore this tropical paradise in which dense tropical rain forest shows off all its spectacular colours. It was here on the north coast that Christopher Columbus landed in1502 and where the Spanish were defeated by the British in a bloody battle for sovereign control of the island. Dunn`s River Falls is the name of a waterfall near to Ochos Rios, one of the island's most well known natural attractions. In swimming attire, more than a million annual visitors attempt to climb through spraying torrents of water whilst linking hands in a human chain. In foaming cascades, the water plunges 200 metres down toward the sea over step-shaped limestone blocks and across an overgrown landscape of ferns and plants. Harmony Hall, a Victorian building that is a reminder of British colonial rule, is the name of an immaculate manor house located on a turn of the century plantation. Today it contains a handicraft centre and also a gallery that displays the works of indigenous artists. James Bond Beach is the name of the former winter retreat of the English author, Ian Fleming, who created British secret agent, James Bond. The famous author wrote most of his fourteen 007 novels on the small island of Golden Eye, of which five were set in Jamaica. Expansive fields of coconut palms dominate the Sun Valley Plantation which continues a tradition that dates back 250 years. In addition to bananas, citrus fruits, papayas, melons and apples, various spices are also cultivated on the plantation. World famous for their coffee beans, the Blue Mountains represent breathtaking primeval nature with a hint of adventure, a further experience in this sun-scorched island.

TMT-DVD-123 - LEPTIS MAGNA Northern Libya was once where the dramatic history Leptis Magna was created, an ancient metropolis that was the first and thus the oldest Phoenician settlement that formed part of what was later known as Tripolitania. The remains of this city are typically Roman. The second century A.D. brought new prosperity when Septimius Severus, who was born in Leptis Magna, became emperor of the Imperium Romanum. At that time monumental buildings were constructed whose beauty and size was only surpassed by those in Rome itself. The ruins of the very large Severian Basilica highlight the amazing architectural skills of the master builders of those days. The Forum was also built at the time of Septimius Severus and today it is the most imposing area in the ancient city. Artistic Medusa and Gorgon heads adorn the remains of a restored arcade in the Forum.. The city's Amphitheatre that was once the scene of bloody gladiatorial battles and wildlife savagery, also possesses its own special ambience. Leptis Magna was an important port for the export of wild animals from Africa's southern regions, such as elephants, lions and leopards. For many years Leptis Magna was lost to history until it was rediscovered in the twentieth century when it once again revealed much of the magic of its truly glorious past.

GTR-DVD-1168 - The Tower Of London is the home of the Crown Jewels and one of the many historical sights of the United Kingdom's capital city. Just as with the British Empire, the Tower has a colourful and dramatic past and it was originally designed as a fortress by William The Conqueror. Not far from the Tower's original main entrance prisoners were taken through Traitors' Gate into the notorious dungeons. In1843 the moat dried up but the old fortress and its towers have survived to the present day. It must have been a terrifying experience to be imprisoned there and few prisoners lived to tell the tale of the rigours of the Tower. Many members of the English royal family were executed in the Tower but there were times when official execution was replaced by cold-blooded murder. Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry The Eighth, was the most famous of those who fell victim to the Tower. Tower Bridge is a masterpiece of Victorian technology and construction. Its drawbridge once allowed large sailing ships to travel to the centre of the city. Today, however, the majority of large ships dock downstream and now the famous old bridge is raised around nine hundred times each year to facilitate the passage of numerous vessels that travel along the Thames. Even today the River Thames is ruled by this majestic bridge and the spectacular view from the Bridge's 50 metre high walkway is truly fascinating. Tower Bridge and the Tower Of London are without any doubt two of London's most striking and fascinating landmarks. GTR-DVD-1133 - Toledo is one of the oldest and proudest cities in Spain and during Roman times a large settlement was established there. Later, the Visi Goths recognized the strategic value of this city on the Rio Tajo and it became the capital of their empire. Elevated on a mighty rock foundation the Toledo's unique location served a useful purpose for its eventual defense as the city was the scene of many a bloody battle. In 712 A.D. the capital of the Visi Goths was violently integrated with the Muslim Empire of Al-Andalus. Throughout the centuries Toledo has been regarded as a cultural centre of medieval Spain and was known as a 'City of Three Cultures' as it was here that Arabs, Jews and Christians lived together in peace until the time when the catholic church grew intolerant of other religions. In 1229, construction work on the monumental Toledo Cathedral began and in 1493 the Gothic masterpiece was completed. The proportions of this enormous cathedral make it one of the most spectacular in Spain. The mighty fortress of Alcázar is a world apart from the cathedral and served as the model for the later building of El Escorial. Since its construction in the 16th century, the city's landmark was rebuilt and restored following numerous wars and hostilities. The massive Bisagra Gate embodies yet another symbol of the fusion between Arabic Moorish and Spanish Castilian architecture. Swathed in colourful and dramatic history Toledo enjoys a unique place among all of Spain's old and fascinating cities. GTR-DVD-1225 - The mighty Olavinlinna Castle rises majestically above the picturesque lakeland scenery of Savonlinna in southern Finland, a former border region that was once the scene of many a bloody battle. The location of the fortress was well chosen as for many centuries the strategically-placed castle on the small granite island had to withstand attack from the Russian army. Large sections of the castle have been extensively restored and transformed into two museums. The History Museum contains various finds that relate to the history of Olavinlinna. Unfortunately, none of the castle's original wooden furniture and fittings have survived and several devastating fires destroyed much of the castle's internal décor in the 19th century. The Orthodox Museum contains a large number of icons and cult objects of the Russian Orthodox Church and highlight the cultural influence that the Russians had on the castle. Each June the Olavinlinna Courtyard is transformed into the main venue of the renowned Savonlinna Opera Festival. The festival is also famous beyond Finland and is one of the crowning highlights of Europe's summer festivals. Thanks to its annual cultural events, Olavinlinna Castle is now a tranquil and historic setting for one and all. GTR-DVD-1254 - Around a hundred a twenty kilometres east of Libya's capital city of Tripoli is one of the most fascinating ruins of antiquity, the legendary city of Leptis Magna. This extraordinary metropolis was the first of three Phoenician cities that were founded in what later became known as Tripolitania. In addition to its trade in olive oil and various other agricultural products the city owed much of its wealth to a uniquely exotic export: in those days wild animals such as the lion and elephant were shipped to Leptis Magna from Africa and distributed to various Roman cities. These creatures formed the main attraction for the Roman's bloody entertainments and thus were highly prized and so the city's wealth went from strength to strength. Alas, only the many impressive remains of its once glorious buildings, such as a magnificent theatre, indicate the former greatness and power of the ancient city. Leptis Magna is one of the most important and striking archaeological sites of antiquity, a place full of history and mystique and surrounded by scenic splendour. GTR-DVD-1244 - The ruins of the Crusader castles of Jordan serve as a reminder of the bloody battles that once took place between the Christians and Moslems and that shook the Near East at a time in history known as The Crusades.Around four kilometres from the small town of Ajlun is Jordan's sole surviving castle, Qalaat Ar-Rabad. It was designed to protect the pilgrims who were on their way to Mecca but was also a symbol of military power aimed well and truly at the Crusaders. The year 1115 marked not only the victory of the Crusaders at the Battle Of Tell Danit but also the beginning of Shoubak's construction. After a siege that lasted eighteen months, Shoubak fell in 1189 to Ayyubiden. Shortly afterwards it was enlarged by the Marmeluccs and in the 19th century the Ottomans moved into the fortress. The most famous of the Crusader castles is situated in the city of Kerak around twenty kilometres southeast of the southernmost extremity of the Dead Sea. The fortress had great strategic importance as those who controlled Al Kerak also controlled large areas of Palestine and an area that extended to the southern section of the Dead Sea.Almost a hundred years after the conquest of the fortress the last French outposts in the Near East were also abandoned and today it is only the mighty and impressive ruins of the Crusaders that have survived: an atmospheric reminder of a glorious and colourful past.Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. GTR-DVD-1025 - Today, Carthage is still the centre of Tunisian political power and the past has made its own remarkable and indelible impression. According to legend, the city of Karth Hadasht was founded by Phoenician settlers in the year 814 B.C. The Romans named it, 'Carthage'.The city soon began to control the Numidic hinterland and established colonies in the entire western area of the Mediterranean. Relatively little remains of the original Phoenician and Punic buildings. So far, archaeologists have only managed to recover Roman treasures. A former monastery, Carthage Museum was built on historic land that also contains numerous fascinating relics from both the Punic and Roman epochs. Close to the museum there is an array of water cisterns, an impressive example of Roman engineering. In earlier times, the water cisterns were mainly supplied by the Zaghouans Aquaduct that was built by the Romans at the beginning of the second century A.D. The impressive Carthage Amphitheatre dates back to the time of Emperor Augustinus. It was a popular setting for cruel and bloody entertainment. Following Roman tradition, the amphitheatre's arena was the most important place for public entertainment. Even today one can sense what it must have been like for the gladiators as they ran into the arena to battle for their life. Built between 138 and 161 A.D., Carthage's impressive therms are some of the most beautiful and splendid bathing spas of the entire Roman empire. The spa area originally extended 300m along the coast and was over 100m wide. A well thought out underground canal system was supplied by a network of cisterns that supplied water from the nearby hills down to the baths. In spite of past wars and destruction by the Romans, Carthage has retained its unique and majestic beauty to the present day.
