VPG-DVD-147 - SHANGHAI Shanghai is a gigantic city that is a meeting point of both east and west. The shoreline is without a doubt the city's main focal point. The city is a combination of the past, present and future and contains the historic monuments and eye-catching buildings of a great metropolis. It was once referred to as 'the whore of Asia': capital of crime, the Paris of the east and the centre of Maoism. But today the city is ruled by modern-thinkin communists and the Yangzi Delta is not only China's largest port but also its new shining star of capitalism. The Oriental Pearl Tower is a mighty four hundred and sixty-eight metre high television tower that contains an entertainment centre, futuristic luxury hotel, fine restaurant and offers the most superb views across the city. In the centre of the city's labyrinth-like shopping alleys a zigzag bridge extends across a small pond to a famous tea house. The bridge was designed thus in order to fend off evil spirits who, it was believed, could walk only in a straight line! Located in the countryside, Suzhou is above all famous for its gardens. The 'Garden Of The Policy Of The Common People' is one of China's four most famous gardens. The complex was built between 1522 and 1566 at the command of an important mandarin and designed according to his wishes. South of Suzhou is Zhou Zhuang that is said to have been the first water village in China. A journey on its canals is certainly worthwhile as the surrounding area is covered with thousands of canals and rivers and many villages in the area are only accessible by boat. Shanghai and its surrounding area has now freed itself from its early growing pains and from the restrictions imposed by Chairman Mao and today enjoys the rich rewards of capitalism.

VPG-DVD-222 - HAMBURG Hamburg is a lively metropolis in the north of Germany and contains several green spaces, canals and lakes and provides a good standard of living for its inhabitants. Although known as a harbour city, Hamburg is located on the Elbe and is more than a hundred kilometres from the North Sea. Due to its huge river the sheltered harbour is accessible to large containerships. The Speicherstadt is part of the harbour and is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is crossed by canals that are known as fleets. It was once what amounted to a city of warehouses whose Gothic brick architecture with gables, pinnacles and arches created an extraordinary setting. The tower of St. Michaelis Church is lovingly known as 'Michel' and is one of the city's most famous landmarks and it is also one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the north of Germany, its white, grey and golden interior being particularly impressive. City Hall highlights the power of the autonomous Hansestadt Hamburg. This impressive building is supported by four thousand oak posts in the former swampland of the Alster. Hamburg is a green city on the water and gateway to the world: a European harbour that contains the spirit of distant lands!

VPG-DVD-141 -BANGKOK Bangkok is synonymous with lively chaos but Thailand's great metropolis is also a compelling experience for the senses and a fascinating city full of contrast. We begin our sightseeing tour early in the morning about a hundred kilometres south west of the city centre at the floating market of Damnoen Saduak. Here, men and women travel on the canals by sampan amid a fertile landscape. Fruit, vegetables, flowers and all manner of goods are available and many of the boats have a kitchen in which fresh food is prepared to satisfy hearty appetites. Back in the city we visit some of its most important sights such as the Wat Phra Kaeo, The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most important place of worship for the Thai people. Bangkok's most important landmark is also its most beautiful temple complex, a wonderful work of art comprising numerous splendid buildings. Today the Royal Grand Palace is used for national ceremonies and coronations. During the city's early years it was originally built as a residence for King Rama. The magnificent residence of the former god king shines out in all the typical splendour and elegance of the Far East, a Siamese heaven on Earth! In the 19th century Bangkok contained several canals known as 'Klongs' and most of them have subsequently been replaced with streets but a few have survived. Travelling on the canals is a wonderful way to take in the sights and for centuries life on the city's waterways has changed very little. Bangkok is a typical Asian city with much exotic hustle, bustle and excitement. It is truly a city that never sleeps!

VPG-DVD-182 - AMSTERDAM Amsterdam is a captivating metropolis, a city of canals in which anything is allowed as long as it does no harm. In 1567 the much-travelled Italian, Lodovico Guicciardini, referred to Amsterdam as 'The Venice of the north'. Today the view across the main square and royal castle gives little hint that the city is supported by stakes and that Amsterdam is the largest lakeland village in the world. The bicycle is one of the city's main features and indeed parking spaces have been designed specially for this mode of transport that shows that even in a large city there is an alternative way of getting about. In the city centre there are nearly seven thousand protected houses and warehouses most of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and the three hundred year old Magere Brug is of wood construction and is one of the most beautiful drawbridges in the world. The Bloemenmarkt has been in existence since the 17th century and in bygone days fresh flowers were delivered by boat and sold on board. Here a great variety of colourful tulips and bulbs is offered for sale as well as many exotic plants and seeds. New Church is almost six hundred years old but due to it's lack of worshippers it is now used as a venue for exhibitions and concerts which fund its continued maintenance. Built in around 1300 A.D., Old Church is the oldest religious building in the city. During the Middle Ages it served as a refuge for vagrants but today it is surrounded by a seedy sex and entertainment district. In 1682 the city fathers decided to create a leisure area in the east of the city in the centre of which the Artis Zoo was subsequently established, the oldest zoo on the European continent. Amsterdam possesses an inescapable charm that is adored by both aged hippies and trendy teenagers alike. It is Europe's irresistible 'Capital of Cool!

OTT-DVD-132 - The legendary Menam Chao Phraya is often referred to as, 'The Royal River,' and is the largest and also the most important river in Thailand. For several centuries the everyday life of Bangkok, formerly known as Krung Thep, has been closely associated with its canals. The most important sanctuary in the city's historic royal palace in Bangkok is Wat Phra Keo, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, with its highly visible gilded Chedi. The devotion to Buddhism of the Royal Thai Chakri Dynasty is displayed here in impressive style. One treasure in particular stands out, the Emerald Buddha, the temple's most sacred object. Boat tours through the Klongs, narrow and extensive canals, are a good way to enjoy the city's sights. Even though the Klongs are not as important as they were a century or more ago they are an atmospheric reminder of the past. It is not surprising that Bangkok was once referred to as 'The Venice of the East'. Even though shipping is no longer important on the three hundred and seventy kilometre long river, the Menam Chao Phraya is frequented by hordes of tourists. In addition to numerous historic buildings, the boat passes by many districts in which poverty is rife. Around sixty kilometres north of Bangkok the boat arrives at a natural island in the middle of the Chao Phraya. From the landing stage it is only a few steps to the former royal summer residence of Bang Pa In. A few kilometres upriver is the ruined city of Ayutthaya, the legendary capital of a kingdom that once influenced a huge area of southeast Asia for more than four hundred years. Due to the many historic sites and fascinating sanctuaries that were built along the banks of the Menam Chao Phraya, this great 'royal' river has played a vital role in the cultural development of Thailand, a land that even today still exudes the exotic ambience of a golden age.

OTT-DVD-120 - On Tour... VIA DEL SALE Sightseeing Sicily's Salty CoastlineVIA DEL SALE Our journey begins in Marsala along a captivating route that travels the west coast of Sicily, the Via Del Sale or 'Salt Road'. Marsala derived its sonorous name from the Arabs who named it, Marsal Allah, 'God's Harbour'. However, the city's origins do not date back to the Arabs but to the earlier Phoenicians. Marsala became famous throughout the world due to its popular dessert wine of the same name which was developed at the end of the 18th century by an Englishman. Sicily's west coast contains many small and atmospheric fishing harbours where for thousands of years the seafood here has been a vital source of both nourishment and income. The Sicilians and Phoenicians were the first to appreciate the region between Marsala and Trapani and thus transformed each of these towns into a busy centre of trade. The Salines were once of great economic importance as they represented the foundation of wealth for the people of the Trapani region whose unique climate, scenery and geography have created the perfect conditions for the salt that is harvested here. Along the entire route of the Via Del Sale the region's historic windmills rise up proudly from the Salines. In this part of the world a boat trip is an ideal way to experience old canals and salt fields and to gain an overall impression of the production of salt. With their combination of ancient cultivated landscapes, beautiful coastal regions, traditional fishing villages and last but not least the historic cities of Marsala and Trapani, the Via Del Sale still shines out in its importance as one of the most unusual and striking roads in Sicily.

GTR-DVD-1166 - A few kilometres from the modern, pulsating and gigantic metropolis of Shanghai there is an idyllic mediaeval village, Zhou Zhuang, that is believed to have been the first 'water village' in China. However, it was not until the middle of the 1980s that the picturesque village was added to the tourist map and since then its splendid old buildings and canals have been recognised as a truly magnificent treasure. The origin and founding of Zhou Zhuang dates back around nine hundred years. Due to its unique location the town has escaped war and plunder as only the local inhabitants knew their way around the labyrinth-like canals that once led into the small town. But Suzhou is more famous for its gardens Beautiful bridges span across the canals while run down houses indicate the meagre financial resources of their inhabitants. The city's more impressive and elegant buildings date back to its long and glorious past, such as the town gate and Pan Men Wall. The Garden Of Politics For The Simple Man is one of the four most popular gardens in China and was designed according to the wishes of an important mandarin between the years 1522 and 1566. GTR-DVD-1216 - Sukhothai, 'Dawn Of Happiness', this, the name of the first capital of Thailand, once marked the beginning of a new epoch. During the course of its one hundred and twenty year flowering period several of the city's impressive buildings were created such as the magnificent Wat Mahathat Temple. Beyond the old city walls is the fascinating Wat Si Chum Temple which owes its national fame to the huge seated Buddha sculpture of Phra Atchana that is more than eleven metres high and is one of the largest and most imposing Buddha statues in Thailand. Picturesque yet almost sad the century old ruins seem to be reflected within the water of the nearby moats, canals and ponds yearning for a bygone time when the area was full of buildings that in turn were full of life. But despite its continuing decay Sukhothai is still a truly magical experience. Whether public galleries or private quarters, everywhere there is a superb array of many objets d'art and splendid interior architecture. The central point of the Peterhof's 21 hectare upper park is a replica of Nurnberg's glorious Neptune Fountain, which is both an architectural and horticultural work of art.
