VPG-DVD-220 - OSLO Although the Norwegian metropolis of Oslo is a modern city it continues to be inspired by the lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. The unique capital city of the Vikings is full of both culture and sport, including a royal castle, various museums, ancient churches and world famous sporting events. It has nine hundred years of history. The conference rooms of the city's government are decorated with frescos and paintings by Munch, Krogh, Revold and Rolfsen and each year on the tenth of December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony takes place. West of the harbour basin is Akerbrygge, a city quarter that was created on the site of a former shipyard and which features some unusual architecture where glass, metal and red brick dominates as in the style of London's Docklands. The Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum features the long history of Norwegian navigation. Various figureheads are exhibited and it is no surprise that most of them are female as seafarers have always chosen to be protected by goddesses! In the Kontiki Museum, the filigree balsa river boat is on display. Thor Heyderdal sailed across the Pacific for one hundred and one days in the Kontiki, from Peru to Polynesia. This city is a royal residence and a cultural capital of Europe and is the oldest of Scandinavia's capital cities and the greenest metropolis on the European continent. A place of joie de vivre, independence and a colourful past!

VPG-DVD-199 - KØBENHAVN Copenhagen is the capital of the Kingdom of Denmark and is situated on the east coast of Sæland Island on the Öresund, the link between the North Sea and the Baltic. It is a European capital of culture, home country of the Little Mermaid and a successful combination of Scandinavian elegance and Middle-European joie de vivre. In 1167 Bishop Absalon Of Roskilde was granted by King Valdemar an area of land on Öresund to which the small settlement of Havn also belonged. For the protection of both fishermen and traders he built a fortress and the settlement developed into Kobmandshavn, the Harbour Of The Traders. Copenhagen was born and the fortress was continuously enlarged until in 1376 a castle was built on its foundation. The huge Christiansborg Slot extends across the larger part of Slotsholmen, Castle Island and it has been Denmark's power base for hundreds of years. The huge statue in the square features King Frederik The 7th on horseback, a monarch known in Danish history as the 'King Of Democracy'. Each day crowds of people make for Copenhagen's world famous landmark, The Little Mermaid, created by artist Edward Eriksen. Tiny and elegant and seated on a stone she gazes yearningly across the sea oblivious to the city's hustle and bustle. The Rundetårn is an unusual building that was built at the command of the Renaissance king, Christian The Fourth. Its circular tower is thirty-six metres high and has a diameter of fifteen metres. In place of a conventional stairway royal architects Hans and Morten Van Steenwinkel constructed a winding two hundred and nine metre long ramp. Thus the somewhat rotund king was able to travel without difficulty by carriage to the astrological observatory at the top! Copenhagen is a friendly metropolis in which tolerance and openness are the order of the day, a 'City On The Sea' that fascinates all who experience it.

NPM-DVD-141 - Nature has always been one of the most popular attractions in Finland and the Lemmenjoki National Park is no exception. The most impressive and also the most comfortable way to travel through the park is by boat as the scenery is, in the main, totally natural and thus has few marked paths. Vast pine forests form part of the natural scenery in Lemmenjoki and in the southern sections of the park, birch trees and spruces are part of its indigenous flora. For many years today's park was the sole domain of the Sámi, Scandinavia's original inhabitants, and was used by them as a traditional hunting ground and also as a grazing land for their reindeer. Archaeological discoveries revealed that the Sámi survived by hunting as well as trading in reindeer, much as they do today. The park is covered with snow for seven months of the year. It is then that the temperature falls below freezing point and on average is between minus 8 and minus 18 degrees! As the largest national park in Europe, the Lemmenjoki Nature Reserve is unique. With its enormous and unspoiled areas of wilderness this remarkable park highlights the captivating beauty of Scandinavia's natural landscape.

GTR-DVD-1212 - In the middle of the 18th century King Frederik ordered the construction of the Frederiks Kirke in the heart of Copenhagen. Around the dome's massive external balustrade there are various statues dedicated to a number of important church leaders including Moses and Martin Luther. With a diameter of over thirty one metres the Baroque dome of the Frederiks Kirke is the third largest of its kind in the world and was originally modelled on London's Saint Paul's Cathedral and also Saint Peter's in Rome. But in spite of its beautiful Neo-Classical appearance and numerous splendid sculptures, the final result turned out to be far smaller than originally hoped for by King Frederik The Fifth. However, as the church and its prominent dome blends so harmoniously with the historical townscape of Copenhagen its present day dimensions have proven to be ideal for its surroundings. The majestic dome of the Frederiks Kirke highlights the architectural importance of this fascinating building as being the largest church of its kind in Scandinavia. GTR-DVD-1076 - Indonesia's largest Hindu holy place is Prambanan, in Central Java, a religious treasure that dates back to the 9th century and originally included 232 temples. An earthquake struck and for many centuries the buildings lay buried beneath the ground until, in 1918, archaeologists began to reconstruct the main temples. The individual sections of the Candi Lorojongrang were rebuilt like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, which made the reconstruction process particularly laborious, but in 1953 the rebuilding of the central temples was completed. The Candi Siva Temple rises 47 metres into the sky and is the tallest in Prambanan and contains four inner chambers that face the four points of the compass. The main Hindu god, Shiva, is depicted in the southern chamber, whilst the sculpture of his reborn wife, Durga, is located within the temple's northern chamber. Thankfully, due to the hard work and determination of many archaeologists, the symbolic meaning of the old Hindu god, Shiva, God of Destruction and Renewal, is well on its way to being fully realised. GTR-DVD-1252 - On the banks of the Porvoonjoki River around fifty kilometres east of the Finnish metropolis of Helsinki is the picturesque town of Porvoo. The origin of today's bishop's town dates back to 1346 and after Turku it is the second oldest town in Finland. Porvoo was located on one of Scandinavia's most important trading routes, the historic King's Road, which became a pawn in the hands of the great powers. In 1760 a devastating fire reduced the town to ashes. Unfortunately only a few buildings survived the catastrophe. However, the historic centre of Porvoo, with its charming old buildings, has managed to maintain much of its original atmosphere. Porvoo's oldest building dates back to the sixteenth century yet the town's other buildings more than compensate for their lack of age by way of their pretty floral decorations. The idyllic, narrow lanes and shopping streets as well as the colourful buildings, form a unique ensemble that is truly unforgettable. Porvoo is rightfully described as a Finnish treasure trove of mediaeval architecture!
