VPG-DVD-166 - SULTANATE OF OMAN The Sultanate Of Oman is a fabulous land full of surprises, a splendid example of original Arabia that extends from the Straits Of Hormuz to the southern Dhofar. Up until the 1970's the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula was only accessible by various caravan routes but today it boasts an abundance of mysterious desert towns and splendid palaces. The white city of Sohar is the historic harbour of the Islamic world and the 'Gateway To China'. It is still guarded by the white Sohar Fort, a mighty four-storey structure that dates back to the 14th century. The Hajar Mountains extend for almost six hundred kilometres from the Musandam Peninsula in the north to its eastern sections. They are also known as the Oman Mountains and divide the coast from the inland. Oman covers around three hundred thousand square kilometres and is one of the most sparsely settled countries in the world with only one and a half million inhabitants. Nizwa, the religious center of the Omans, has a moving past that manifests itself in the city's defensive fortress. Until the 12th century it was the capital of the Desert State of Oman. Even today this oasis city and trading metropolis has lost none of its former importance. Al-Hamra is the name of a three hundred year old oasis village that dates back to the reign of Imam Saif Bin Sultan. At the end of the 17th century members of the Abriyin Tribe settled here the descendants of whom still live in the Jebal-Akhdar Mountains. Al-Hamra means 'The Red One', an Arabic name that is also to be found in the word 'Alhambra', in Spain's Granada. The Sultanate Of Oman is a treasure trove of rarities. Its twelve thousand year old history is visible throughout the entire country and the beauty of the mysterious Arabian Peninsula is a truly captivating experience.

VPG-DVD-200 - RAJASTHAN Rajasthan, Land Of Kings and one of the most unique and colourful provinces in northern India on the border with Pakistan. The barren desert landscape was once the home of the Rajputes that ruled over the land for more than a thousand years. Our journey begins in Jaipur, the Pink City, where the buildings consist of the reddish stone of the surrounding landscape. Much to the surprise of tourists the local people continue to use the elephant as a means of transport in this splendid trading town. However, modern traffic with its cars, tuk-tuk taxis and countless bicycles has also found its way into this fairytale-like city. An artificial lake suddenly appears in the centre of which is the beautiful Jal Mahal Castle. Amid the arid, rocky landscape is the original residence of the Rajputes clan, the Amber Fort that is strategically situated within rock walls. The small town of Churu is flanked on both its south and west sides by sand dunes. It is believed that it was founded in 1563 by the Jats. It subsequently became important as the supplier of caravans for the Poddar family that brought the village a long period of prosperity. The white temples of Ranakpur are the sanctuaries of the Jains, situated in a picturesque valley to the west of the Aravalli Mountains north of Udaipur. Rajasthan is the Land Of The Maharajas in all its splendour: a living fairy-tale beneath the desert sky.

Palmyra's fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

The journey through this exotic land begins in Sikar, a place that still brings to mind the splendour of bygone times. The streets and lanes of this small town are always busy and it is as though half the population is making its way through the town. Lorries and camel wagons dominate the streets and the unpredictable nature of Indian traffic is a constant challenge. Havelis, the exquisite homes of the city's former traders, are architectural gems. The dwelling houses of Sikar's wealthy traders have retained their former glory and are built of yellow sandstone. The word 'havelis' is derived from the Persian language and means 'encircled square'. The walls protect the building from the searing heat and also uninvited guests. In the 18th century Churu was one of the most important stops along the caravan route. The mighty Poddar Family dominated the supply of provisions to the travelling traders. Due to punitive taxes they moved their business to Ramgarh thus Churu gradually fell into decay but with the arrival of the British the town prospered once again. Each city in the Shekawati region is like something from a movie set and it would not be at all surprising if a film crew suddenly appeared from behind one of the magnificent facades! The splendour of the region's havelis and royal palaces has turned this journey into an unforgettable adventure. Shekawati is truly a golden step into a lost age.

Qasr Al Mushatta is the largest of the Umayyad castles although it gradually fell into ruins and much of it was used elsewhere as building material. No other desert castle was built with such megalomania and it was designed as the winter palace of Caliph Walid The Second. Paved roads have now replaced the former caravan routes. Close to the southern Azraq Amman Road is the quadrate castle of Qasr El Kharaneh. This fortress like building is one of the most well preserved desert castles of the Umayyad and its massive external walls and corner towers give it an awesome appearance. The small bathing castle of Qusair Amra is one of the most beautiful castles in Jordan. Its bathing house uniquely highlights the abundant luxury enjoyed by the former monarchs of the desert. The castle features a number of magnificent and well known wall paintings that depict various bathing and hunting scenes. Today the happy-go-lucky nature of the Umayyad monarchy seems to be far removed from Islam. Indeed, some of the scenes are of a sensual nature. GTR-DVD-1234 - Between the Gulf Of Akaba and the Dead Sea, close to Wadi Musa, the "Valley Of MOSES" in the heart of Jordan and hidden beyond near impenetrable mountains, is the fascinating and mysterious ancient city of Petra. Its strategic location at the junction of six important caravan routes, including the famous Incense Road, brought much prosperity to the city. The almost two kilometre long Siq follows the dried out riverbed of the Musa whose course was redirected by the Nabnataeans in order to protect their capital from dangerous flood waters. A canal that follows the Siq around two metres above ground is a fine technical masterpiece that was also created by the Nabataeans. There are only two routes that lead to the rocky city of Petra a narrow mountain pass in the northwest and, to the east, the sometimes two hundred metre deep Siq Gorge. It is believed that the Treasury, carved out of solid rock walls, was built in the first century B.C. It is the main landmark of the ancient Nabataean metropolis. Six splendid columns form the lower part of the atrium that in common with most of the architecture here has been exceptionally well-preserved. The construction of the mighty fortress and subsequent creation of the city under Rajputen monarch, Jaisal, took place in 1155. Today the strongly fortified Jaisalmer Palace is entered by a total of three mighty gates that date back to the sixteenth century. The impressive Jain sanctuaries within the palace were partly built in the fifteenth century before the golden age of the Jaisalmers. Four Jain sanctuaries lead almost directly into each other thus at first sight they look like a single large temple complex.
