VPG-DVD-152 - TRINIDAD Located to the south of the Caribbean island of Cuba, Trinidad was founded by the Spaniard, Velazquez and in the 18th century the city experienced great wealth and recognition through the cultivation of sugar cane. The exclusive palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city with tall wooden gates, barred windows and original roof tiles that characterise the style of bygone days. The Palacio Padron is located on the Plaza Mayor, the centre of the city. A few years ago the palace was lovingly restored in painstaking detail and transformed into an archaeological museum. Around the main square the most beautiful palaces stand in rows and are an impressive indicator of the colonial lifestyle enjoyed by the former sugar aristocracy. The slave trade and the cultivation of sugar cane made the island's inhabitants incredibly wealthy and Trinidad became the most important cultural and trade centre in the whole of Cuba. The former palace of the Cantero sugar barons now houses the Museo De Historia, an impressive building in the Calle Bolivar in which visitors can marvel at old timepieces, porcelain, furniture and valuable crystal chandeliers. The seven storey Torre De Iznaga rises menacingly into the sky, the bells of which once summoned the plantation slaves to work while watchmen surveyed the valley from above because of the fears of the plantation owners who believed that one day the slaves would rebel against them. Splendid exotic beauty in a land situated between sun and socialism, sugar and cigars, rumba and revolution. In Trinidad it is as though everything is in a state of suspended animation waiting to be kissed awake.

In 1915 millionaire Carl Fisher had a road constructed through the island's dense and snake-invested mangrove forest, today's Lincoln Road. The aftermath of a powerful hurricane once meant a new beginning: hundreds of hotels and apartment houses were built in Art Deco Style and today they blend well with the local lifestyle. Since the 1950s Virginia Key has been the home of the Miami Seaquarium, a marvellous world of marine life. It soon became world famous due to the incredible performances of its marine life and part of the TV Series „Flipper" was filmed there. The Miami region is a melting pot of immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean, a lively metropolis on the edge of the Everglades and the Florida Keys. A unique American cocktail of glamour, flamboyance and harsh reality!

VPG-DVD-114 HABANA La Habana, capital of Cuba, the Caribbean metropolis that for many decades has been so little loved and so badly neglected, with breathtakingly restored beauty alongside unbelievable ruins - the queen of the Antilles in a country that lies between sun and socialism, between Rumba and Revolution! As early as 1553, the Spanish Conquistadors chose Havana's harbour as a rendezvous for ships that traded gold and silver in its colonies and, to protect this 'Gateway To The New World' from attack by looters, several forts were built, the oldest of which being the Castello El Morro whose construction took more than two decades. As standards of living progressed, pirates and buccaneers came here and repeatedly destroyed parts of the growing town but each time they did so it was rebuilt and improved. La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway's local drinking place and nowhere else is the ‚Mojito' mixed better: three year old white rum, lime juice, soda, sugar, ice and mint. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi House, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia and when the Daiquiri is served one almost expects Fidel Castro to be seated at the next table! The Nacional Hotel, which was built in 1930 with Mafia money and once accommodated prominent people from the film and business world, exudes nostalgic dreams of unmitigated pleasures. A city whose riches once seemed boundless, La Habana now rests in sleepy magic waiting to be discovered once again.

Miami Beach is a narrow island just off the mainland and Miami City is a leisure world of the rich and famous. Coral Gables was built in the 1920's in flamboyant southern Europe style as was the Venetian Pool and the Biltmore Hotel whose tower is a replica of the Giralda in Seville. The Florida Keys are a group of thirty one coral islands that extend from Miami on the southern point of Florida, to the Caribbean. The first and largest is Key Largo made famous by a Hollywood movie that starred Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Orlando was founded in 1875 as an agricultural distribution centre and today the biggest entertainment parks in the world are located there and attended by almost forty three million visitors each year. On the east coast of the Florida Peninsula, Cape Canaveral juts out into the Atlantic As far back as 1949 the 'Rocket Trials Zone', as it was then known, was built within an area that has been further developed and extended to become the world famous Space Station it is today. Florida is a truly magical place with something special to offer for one and all!

Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi House, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served, one almost expects Fidel Castro to be sitting at the next table. Pinar Del Rio is a small but busy town in which the Red Star and portraits of Che Guevara are on display for all to see. In the old town, colourful houses with beautiful pillared corridors demonstrate the former wealth of the country's independent tobacco growers. A visit to a tobacco factory is a must. Cuba's cigars are world famous. Together with sugar, tobacco is the country's most important export. The oldest geological formation in Cuba are the Mogotes, well-weathered limestone peaks that, supported by pillars, once covered a large complex of caves. On seven manmade islands in the centre of the Cienaga De Zapata National Park, is the Indian village of Guama. This swampy nature reserve with its dense mangrove forest vegetation is an ideal sanctuary for many rare water birds. Legend has it that the Siboney Indians sunk all their possessions in the Laguna Del Tesoro to protect their gold from the Spaniards. No Cuban town has changed as little in two hundred years than that of Trinidad. In the 18th century, the city experienced great wealth and recognition due to the cultivation of sugar cane and the luxurious palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city. Rich green tropical forests, tobacco country at the foot of mysterious mountain caves, humid tropical swamps, history, cigars and rum. Cuba is a colourful cocktail.

Jamaica is another Caribbean paradise and its second largest city, Montego Bay, is the starting point for tourists from all over the world. Harmony Hall is the name of an immaculate manor house situated on a turn of the century plantation, and James Bond Beach was once the winter retreat of English author, Ian Fleming. Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and the island's political, economic and cultural centre, a former pirate stronghold that is a lively mixture of joie de vivre and reggae. Nassau is the capital of New Providence Island and is only one of more than seven hundred islands in the Bahaman archipelago. It is visited by huge cruise liners that can seen from everywhere as they overshadow the city's buildings and on each side of its tranquil streets the city's pastel coloured houses look like something from a confectioner's shop. Next, Havana, the Caribbean metropolis that for many years has become somewhat run down and neglected. But nowhere else are the cocktails mixed better! Finally, Trinidad, where time seems most definitely to have stood still! Cuba and the Caribbean, a melting pot of colonial culture and an overgrown and abundant Garden of Eden.

VPG-DVD-155 - CAPE TOWN Located on the southern edge of Africa and lying at the foot of Table Mountain, the metropolis of Cape Town is certainly one of the world's most beautiful cities, an exciting combination of Africa, Europe and the Caribbean. In the park-lined Government Avenue and Queen Victoria Street there's a wonderful collection of well-restored Victorian houses and the Anglican St.Georges Cathedral is where Archbishop Desmond Tutu protested against Apartheid. Part of the historic harbour is the Victoria And Alfred Waterfront. In 1860, Prince Alfred ordered construction of a new harbour basin, followed by the Victoria Basin that contained two watchtowers. Today, the whole of the old port is an internationally-styled entertainment and shopping complex. The two large water tanks in the harbour's Two Ocean Aquarium contain around 3,000 examples of sea life from the Indian and Atlantic oceans. In the adjoining South African Maritime Museum there are examples of the city's historic ships, its fishing industry and details on the construction of its outstanding harbour. Robben Island is situated 11 km. off the coast and in the 16th century the Dutch used it as a prison. During apartheid, political prisoners were incarcerated there, the prison's most famous inmate having been Nelson Mandela who spent 18 years of his 28 year sentence on the island. After the closure of the prison, in 1997 the South African government opened both the island and its former prison to the public. Thus the face of Robben Island changed from being a place of terror and suppression to one of pilgrimage, a symbol of resistance and also a major tourist attraction! The Cape Of Good Hope is the southernmost tip of Africa and since1936 this section of the Cape Peninsula has been a nature reserve. Cape Town and its environs are completely different to the normal expectations of Africa. No desolate bush land reaching to the horizon and no life-threatening wild animals. But it's certainly another remarkable and beautiful dimension to South Africa's magnificent Garden Of Eden!

VPG-DVD-171 - BAHAMAS Nassau is the capital of the island of New Providence which is one of the many islands of the Bahaman archipelago that extends for almost a thousand kilometres between Cuba and Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. New Providence is the commercial and political centre and is more commonly known as the Bahamas. Built between 1805 and 1813 in typical American southern style, the pink-coloured buildings of Parliament Square are the headquarters of the Bahamian government. In front of the white columned Neo-Classical parliament building is a noble statue of the English queen, Victoria, as a young girl. The colourful Caribbean Straw Market is a lively place. There are lots of fascinating things to see including skilful craftsmen who carve traditional objects from mahogany. Bags, baskets and hats made of straw are offered as souvenirs. Along the coast there are several caves in which pirates once hid their ill-gotten gains or argued over buried treasure. During the Stone Age the Arawak Indians lived in the caves. Cable Beach boasts a multitude of exquisite modern hotel complexes that cater for every need and several of them possess a casino. Naturally, each has its own lavish bathing areas and a vast choice of exciting entertainment. Thus it's not too difficult to understand why British secret agent 007 often chose these islands for his investigations! The Bahamas: the very name conjures up remote sandy beaches and turquoise blue water, romantic sunsets and tropical nights. A place where fantastic dreams become wonderful reality.
