VPG-DVD-148 - VILLE DE QUÉBEC On behalf of the French crown, in 1608 Samuel De Champlain established a fur trading post from which originated Québec, a city that today looms over the Saint Laurence River like a majestic fortress. It is the birthplace of French culture in North America. With its small towers and green glimmering roofs the Chateau Frontenac majestically watches over the city. The castle like hotel was built and lavishly furnished in 1894 by the Canadian Pacific Railway and in 1943 was the rendezvous for the allies who met to prepare for the Normandy Landings. Québec's upper city is encircled by a four kilometre long fortified wall that was alternately built upon by the French and the English. In former times, various gates barred entry to the fortress but today they are wide open and welcome visitors into the well preserved old town. Designed by master builder Baillairgè in 1844, La Cathedrale Notre Dame De Québec was Canada's first Catholic cathedral. The Baroque dome of the basilica demonstrates the splendour of Catholic Church design while the altar captivates with its rich detail and paintings of the Holy Mother. The Funiculaire connects the upper city with the lower, the Quartier Petit Champlaine that was the country's first settlement. The train station looks like a mediaeval castle and its large hall seems to be the grand entrance chamber of a palace. The station's anterooms contain huge windows while its ceilings display colourful glass images. Canada's oldest city has successfully retained its deep and historic roots and has sensitively linked them to the needs of the modern world. Québec is truly a sparkling gem of French culture in North America.

VPG-DVD-163 - MARSEILLE Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbour in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of 'Massalia'. In the Middle Ages the city's main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbour. Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta; the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dantès is said to have entered the Abbé Faria. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Marseille - France's wonderful gateway to Africa!

The Skydome is located next to the CN Tower and is a multifunctional sports arena with enormous proportions that has an extendable dome under which many types of sports events and concerts take place. The shining blue Moraine Lake is situated in the Valley Of The Ten Peaks, while the Chateau Lake Louis is one of the oldest and most beautiful railway hotels in the Rocky Mountains. NPM-DVD-103 - Nature Parks CANADIAN ROCKY MOUNTAINS CanadaCANADIAN ROCKY MOUNTAINS In Canada's Rocky Mountains, in the centre of the five largest National Parks in the world, lies the idyllic city of Jasper and a gigantic conservation area which covers 20,000 square kilometres, a large ecosystem in which the treasures of nature and the cultural roots of North America's Native Indians are cherished and preserved. The Jasper Tramway travels into the fantastic mountain world of the Rockies and the grandiose panorama from the summit of Mount Whistler gives an awesome first impression of this majestic mountain region. Whistler Road winds through fields of stones whose barren wastes are like those of a strange planet and the route opens up into a landscape which existed when the earth was in its infancy. Deep into the heart of this magical world the journey leads to the Icefield Parkway past huge forests with tracks leading nowhere, of which only the indigenous Indians and the woodland animals are familiar with the terrain. On a plain which extends 300 square kilometres, the Columbia Ice Fields includes Mount Columbia which rises 4,000 metres toward the heavens. Experienced mountain guides explain this wonder world of nature. Lake Louise is probably the most famous of Canada's mountain lakes and is located at the foot of the 3,464 meter tall Mount Victoria. The chateau Lake Louise was built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad in1886. Far from civilisation and the hectic pace of city life, it offers a good level of service and comfortable accommodation. Canada's icy wilderness offers majestic mountains, deep green lakes and mighty glaciers and all the excitement and adventure of Nature's final frontier.

The Anglican Bishop's cathedral was inaugurated in the year 1804 and bears a strong resemblance to Saint Martin-In-The-Fields, in London. At the Place Royale, Québec's birthplace, is the tiny church of Notre Dame Des Victoires and it was here that the early settlers worshipped with models of their ships that were later suspended by rope above the pews. Québec is truly a sparkling gem of French culture in North America. GTR-DVD-1057 - Versailles was the former palace and dream castle of the French 'Sun King', Louis the Fourteenth. The history of Versailles covers the rise and fall of the Bourbons whose reign covered the most remarkable period of French history. Here, the French king lavishly entertained the decadent nobility, oblivious to the unrest caused by their false pride, supreme arrogance and almost total disregard for the poverty of the French people that would eventually lead to Revolution.Magnificent fountains decorate the palace's huge park that was created by 35,000 workers, a hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths that seem to be without end. Drawn by four horses, the god Apollo emerges from the waters of a fountain. This and further fountains and ponds were designed by Tuby and Lenotre, and are masterpieces of both garden design and the sculptor`s art. Playful figures and statues adorn the park's many paths and even today emanate the joy and merriment of past days. Construction of the royal palace was completed some time after that of the gardens. The palace was to be the epitome of majestic splendour and was designed to accommodate the entire French Court: 20,000 people! Containing more than 700 lavish rooms, the palace is a unique architectural masterpiece. In the opulence of the private rooms there are grand four-poster beds and splendid canopies. Ceiling paintings, gold and marble intarsia, carvings, goblins and superb crystal chandeliers are an indication of some of the king's creative ideas that Lebrun realised in exemplary style. Versailles served as the model for several European palaces such as those in Potsdam, Vienna and St. Petersburg. However, it continues to be a unique monument of unashamed splendour and supreme opulence.
