VPG-DVD-228 - DAMASCUS Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad. Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

TMT-DVD-117 - ALHAMBRA Built during the 13th and 14th centuries, the Alhambra is a group of buildings that overlook Granada. The finest example of Moorish architecture, it was a magnificent citadel for the Moorish kings of Spain. When the Moors were expelled from Spain the citadel was mutilated but in the 19th century it was restored to its former glory. Close by is the Palacio Del Generalife, the summer residence of the Moorish rulers the grounds of which contain fabulous gardens. The Moors were a nomadic North African people consisting mainly of Arabs and Berbers. They invaded Spain in the 8th century and were expelled from it in the early 17th century, prior to which most had been exterminated during the Spanish Inquisition. Yet their contribution to Spain in terms of medicine, art, architecture and science, was immeasurable. A people of commerce, learning, imagination and panache who, like so many of their kind throughout history, were eventually persecuted to near extinction.

OTT-DVD-143 - Phnom Penh is the starting point for a special journey through Cambodia, an exotic land that is gradually transforming itself from a traditional way of life into modern times. The royal palace and the southern sanctuary of the Wat Preah Keo Morokat is one of the most important sights in Phnom Penh. The temple monastery was completed at the beginning of the nineteenth century and symbolises the religious section of the splendid palace complex that also features a reception area as well as the royal living quarters. It takes around five hours for the Royal Express Boat to travel from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and after around a hundred kilometres the boat reaches Tonle Sap Lake. The inhabitants of the Tonle Sap Lake area have adapted to the annual change in the water level -- when, amazingly, the river reverses it's flow - and consequently live in floating villages. For many centuries fishing has been vital to the local people and the lake contains more fish than any other in the world. Most of the inhabitants of the rural areas around Siem Reap have a very relaxed lifestyle. For tourists the local scenery is like a great natural paradise but for the region's farming families it mainly means hard work. The highlight of any journey across Cambodia is most certainly to be found within the historic monuments of the Angkor region, such as the Women's Citadel of Banteay Sre, an extraordinary temple complex. For the people of Cambodia the main temple of Angkor Wat is a unique national monument and an imposing sacred building that is to be found on Cambodia's bank notes as well as on its national flag. The boat cruise on the Royal Express is the perfect way to view Cambodia's scenery and to experience the age old traditions and lifestyle of a land that is slowly saying farewell to its tragic past while optimistically beckoning a bright new future.

GTR-DVD-1015 - REAL ALCÁZAR DE SEVILLA Andalusia, Spain The royal palace of Real Alcázar is located in Seville, the capital of the autonomous Spanish province of Andalusia. Dating back to the 8th century and formerly the oldest citadel built by the Moors, the palace was built on the ruins of a Roman fortress when the Almohaden transformed it into a palace. Following the conquest of the city, the Christian kings and most notably, Don Pedro, employed the best Moorish builders and artists, the Mudejaren. In the Hall of the Envoys the wall tiles contain many Moorish designs and it was here that the country's rulers received envoys from abroad. The furnishings and household goods of the royal private rooms were collected from around most of the known world. The Gala Dining Room is particularly outstanding. It contains precious wall carpets and crystal chandeliers from Murano and a huge table dominates almost the entire length of the room. Moorish arcades lead to the Andalusian Gardens that were planted in place of the original kitchen gardens and many of the courtyards feature a small water fountain that adds to the calm atmosphere. Real Alcázar is the most beautiful example of Mudejar design, a fairy tale from the 'One Thousand And One Nights'! GTR-DVD-1027 - The ruins of the ancient Mexican capital, Teotihuacan, remain a mystery to scientists to the present day. Little is known about the former historic rise and fall of this first major city on the American continent. During its heyday, Teotihuacan extended over an area of more than 20 square kilometres and ruled over a city-state that was larger than that of Ancient Rome.It is believed that the origins of this impressive city date back as far as the second century B.C. Four large platforms surround the Citadel, the administrative centre of the city. On the opposite side is the magnificent and impressive Quetzalcoatl Temple, which is adorned with several reliefs. The huge, towering Sun Pyramid is one of the main landmarks. Overawed by the magnificent structure, the Aztecs described it as, "The place where one becomes god" -- and it is indeed a magnificent and fascinating sight to behold. GTR-DVD-1213 - On the shores of the 'Perfume River', the Song Huong Giang in the heart of Vietnam, is the former royal city and today's provincial capital of Hué. Nine mighty canon are the symbolic guards of the historic citadel and beyond its defensive walls are five hundred hectares that contain the Imperial City and also the Forbidden Purple City, a veritable city within a city. The rise of Hué into a magnificent residence is closely associated with the Nguyen royal family who influenced the city for many centuries. A short boat trip on the Perfume River leads to another of the city's attractions. Located on a hill, legend has it that the Thien Mu Pagoda owes its existence to the appearance of a god disguised as an old woman. The story goes that the woman made a prophecy that a new king would come and build an important pagoda for the gods. King Nyguen Hoang interpreted this prophecy as a religious symbol and thus had a pagoda built in honour of the divine old woman. Despite all the destruction of the Vietnam War the resplendent old capital city on Perfume River is still a remarkable place to be. GTR-DVD-1179 - Around fifteen kilometres east of Kathmandu is Bhaktapur, the smallest yet most beautiful of the three Newar cities. The famous and historic palace district features several artistically decorated shrines and temples and each day Durbar Square is full of local people as well as visitors from all over the world. It is believed that the religious heart of the Durbar area was founded in the 15th century. Entry to the sacred temple is restricted to those of the Hindu faith. Over the centuries further buildings were added around the legendary main temple of the royal palace that surrounds Durbar Square. With the construction of the first citadel, in 1453 King Yaksha Malla laid the foundations of a new and important dynasty in Nepal. But the magic of Bhaktapur does not only lie within its architecture but also in its unique mediaeval atmosphere, an atmosphere frozen by time itself. GTR-DVD-1217 - Twenty kilometres north east of Angkor Thom are the remains of the ancient sanctuary of Bantey Srei that is also known as, 'The Women's Citadel'. To many visitors to Cambodia this unique and atmospheric temple site is the most impressive of all the country's historic monuments. It captivates not so much by its size which, compared to many other of Cambodia's religious sites is comparatively small, but by its exceptional charm. The most sacred area of the temple is surrounded by what are referred to as 'libraries', long buildings the significance of which is unknown. However it is clear that these mysterious buildings once served an important function as they are to be found within each of Cambodia's Khmer temples. More than a thousand years after its creation the Banteay Srei Temple still contains the rich cultural inheritance of the Khmer people. GTR-DVD-1099 - Cairo's Alabaster Mosque dominates the skyline of the largest city in Africa. The imposing building is situated in the middle of the Citadel, a prominent fortress that was built in the 19th century. In 1830, Egyptian King Mohammad Ali Pasha ordered the construction of a mosque to strict Ottoman design. It is no accident that the external appearance of the Mosque is similar to that of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The minarets of the Alabaster Mosque rise 84 metres into the sky and have become an integral part of Cairo's silhouette. The impressive interior of the building is illuminated by an enormous chandelier, a gift from the French King, Louis Philippe The Fifth. Today, the light of the original three hundred and sixty-five oil lamps is powered by electricity, yet the great building still possesses a sublime atmosphere. The brilliance of the light augments the dimensions of the mosque to a breathtaking degree and the ceiling of the great prayer hall is over fifty metres high. Beneath the central cupola is the dignified tomb of King Mohammed Ali. The royal casket is made of the finest Italian marble and is decorated with Turkish motifs. Today, the Alabaster Mosque is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of Egyptian Islamic-Ottoman architecture of the 19th century. It has lost none of its former shining magnificence. GTR-DVD-1114 - Along the southern border of the High Atlas in the heart of Morroco is the impressive village of Ait Benhaddou. The settlement was once situated along one of the country's most important caravan routes but the region's ancient trading routes are no longer used today. A walled village, the Ksar, was founded in the 12th century by the people of Ait Aissa and its narrow lanes lead up to several fortress-like citadels, the five main Kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou. For visitors the narrow, medieval lanes of the village are tantamount to a confusing maze however the plain but nevertheless expressive architecture of the houses has a unique and magical atmosphere. Fortunately, the cultural and historical value of this unique Moroccan clay village has now been fully recognised otherwise each of the houses, towers and kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou may have long since disappeared beneath the sands of time.
