VPG-DVD-169 - PROVENCE Marseille is the most important city in Provence.and is situated on the south coast of France. From a distance, one of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour: the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. With abundant internal furnishings, Byzantine arches, golden mosaics and numerous votives it is a splendid structure inspired by Byzantine Romanic design. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the 5th century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe, Les Calanques, a unique nature reserve where shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Sur Le Pont D'Avignon is a world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge, as that is the location of its bars! A place of radiant light and sweet aromas with villages that nestle in the rocks like eagles'nests and with cities that have an historic past. Provence is indeed a captivating land full of fascinating contrasts.

VPG-DVD-163 - MARSEILLE Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbour in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of 'Massalia'. In the Middle Ages the city's main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbour. Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta; the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dantès is said to have entered the Abbé Faria. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Marseille - France's wonderful gateway to Africa!

OTT-DVD-131 - The Dingle Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland is well known as one of the country's most scenic locations. It is also a region with a fascinating history and the origin of its villages and farms date back to Early Christian and even prehistoric times. The fifteen hundred inhabitants of tiny Dingle Town have for generations been closely associated with the sea. Although today's fishing industry is not what it once was, the fishing harbour still plays a vital role in the lives of the local people. Due to tourism the pubs of Dingle Town are kept well busy, however, compared with other parts of Ireland tourism here is a far more subdued affair. In Dingle Town in 1984 a dolphin appeared just off the coast and it accompanied the fishing boats into the harbour and indeed it still does and the Dingle Dolphin is now a well known attraction on this part of the coast. The Dunbeg Fort originated in the Bronze Age. Archaeology has shown that it dates back to the eighth century B.C. The magnificent location of the fortress hundreds of metres above the thundering sea and mighty cliffs make the visit to Dunbeg Fort a dramatic adventure. Close to Fahan is a large group of Beehive Huts, ancient circular buildings that date back to the Last Ice Age. According to archaeologists further buildings were erected in early Christian times. Its mysterious prehistoric and early Christian monuments as well as the beauty of its landscape have given the Dingle Peninsula the magic that has rightly made The Emerald Isle famous throughout the world!

Reykjavik, also known as 'Smokey Bay', is one of the smallest and cleanest capitals in the world and the northernmost capital on the Planet. Many of the houses of the Old Town are protected monuments such as its oldest building that dates back to 1751. The fishing industry plays an important role in Iceland's economy and accounts for around eighty per cent of its export trade. Whale watching is the ideal way to experience the giants of the deep, mainly mink, humpback and fin whales. The Blue Lagoon is the country's most popular bathing location with turquoise water at a temperature of 40°C surrounded by lava and its water so full of minerals that it has a healing effect. NPM-DVD-127 - The Mesa Verde National Park is located sixty kilometres from the small town of Durango in the U.S. State of Colorado. Various spectacular vantage points are located along the park's winding road, such as that of Park Point which at 2,613 metres above sea level is the highest section of the park and makes the panoramic view across the extensive desert foothills of the Rocky Mountains seems almost endless. Unlike most national parks in North America, and despite the magnificent rock and stone formations of the region, the observation of Nature is not the main reason that most people visit the park as the Mesa Verde is where the origins of an advanced North American civilization are to be found. The oldest traces of this region's human habitation date back almost twelve thousand years when for several centuries the Native Indians lived on top of the high plateau. At that time, the Indians possessed no building skills thus the Anasazi Indians lived within large, natural caves. Created and inhabited by the Anasazi, the impressive cliff dwellings of Spruce Tree House were most likely established in the 12th century. Steep cliffs still show traces of climbing and the ancient paths of the Anasazi and ceremonial buildings such as the Sun Temple were most likely the result of amicable communication between the neighbouring villagers of the canyons. Square Tower House at Navajo Canyon was probably built between 1200 and 1300 A.D. during the latter period of the Anasazi civilisation. The highest vantage point of this settlement is situated close to the main road. With a total of eighty rooms and seven ceremonial areas known as Kivas, this is one of the region's most remarkable cliff dwellings. Although the Anasazi civilisation that once lived among the canyons of Colorado were forgotten for many years they now enchant and fascinate people from around the world. Compared to other national parks in North America, the Mesa Verde unites the beauty of Nature with the unique remnants of a remarkable period of human history.

NPM-DVD-106 - Nature Parks ACADIA New EnglandThe Acadia National Park is located in the North Eastern region of Maine in the United States and measures 142 square kilometres The close proximity of the North Atlantic Ocean to the coastal forest landscape is one of the park's irresistible attractions. During fall, the season in which New England is at its most magnificent, the forests come alive with soft, warm colours and the entire landscape becomes transformed by this 'fifth season' of the year. Thunder Hole is a further attraction. Onlookers seem almost awe struck when witnessing the relentless might of the Atlantic and the unexpected sound of thunder that emanates from a small cave within the granite cliffs caused by the sea as it floods into the air-filled cave thus releasing the air pressure from within with fantastic, thunderous effect. Loop Road is a scenic route that travels from coast to countryside and passes a picturesque and charming semi-timbered house, the Jordan Pond Gate House, built by John D. Rockefeller in1932. Created from a glacier, Jordan Pond is relatively deep and at its northern end there are two round hills, the 'Bubbles' from the summit of which the vast landscape of the glowing forest below is even more impressive. Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic coast. The scant vegetation of this area is quite surprising especially as it is in such close proximity to the nearby forests. During September, when the first so-called 'leaf reports' are announced in the newspapers and on television, there's an air of excitement. The beginning of the Indian Summer is the time of the 'Leaf Peepers.' Whether they travel to the park by car, foot, horse and carriage or by way of a rented mountain bike, visitors to Acadia's beautiful forests have a wide selection of leaves from which to choose. During fall, the red and orange of the maple trees and the golden yellow hues of aspen and birch melt together in a breathtaking carpet of colour that seems to cover the entire country. Acadia is a veritable arcadia!

GTR-DVD-1110 - An architectural and historical gem lies hidden in the Mesa Verde National Park in the State of Colorado in the United States Of America. The dwellings that were built into the cliffs by the Anasazi Indians have given this place the name of, Cliff Palace. They were discovered in1888 by two cowboys who must have been amazed when they stumbled across these ancient and magnificent structures. During the 6th century the Anasazi settled on the Mesa Verde Plateau where they lived in caves and simple wooden shelters. They began by building their dwellings from loam bricks until, in the latter part of the 12th century, they created their cliff dwellings. The amazing dwellings amounted to entire villages located in the cliffs. The technical building abilities of the Anasazi Indians, although simple, were remarkable because although the buildings were constructed with sun-dried loam bricks and extremely primitive tools, they were able to build multi-storey buildings and small towers. Nearly 800 years have passed since the sudden and inexplicable disappearance and emigration of the Anasazi. Thankfully, their fascinating Cliff Palace dwellings in the Mesa Verde National Park have managed to survive the centuries. It is an incredibly wild and beautiful corner of Western Australia. Broome was once the prosperous and bustling centre of the pearling industry. Broome stands on Roebuck Bay and is still a pearling town but not in the scale of years gone by.In its hey day there were some 350 pearling luggers employing 3,000 men working out of Broome.Divers went to depths of 27 meters and this resulted in many deaths. There was a predominant amount of Japanese divers and the Japanese Cemetery shows how they suffered. There are many signs of the Pearling background of Broome with abandoned Luggers and Museums. We take you to Gantheaume Point, where dinosaur's tracks are embedded in sandstone at the base of the cliffs and it is commonly believed they lived 130 million years ago.
