VPG-DVD-116 - SINGAPORE Singapore is a city of gardens and the heart of South East Asia. Its history began in 1819 with Stamford Raffles, a young official who worked for the British East India Company. Raffles estimated that the natural harbour was perfect for trading ships and so he bought the land from the Sultan of Johor and founded a trading settlement. As a free port, Singapore attracted trading ships from all over the world and today four million people live here on an area that covers 640 square kilometres. In June each year there is an exciting boat race in Marina Bay known as the Dragon Boat Race that features magnificently painted dragon boats with hand-carved heads and tails accompanied by the sound of frenetic drumbeats. Dating back to colonial times, British influence is omnipresent, whether the Cricket Club or the Parliament, traditional English spirit rules despite Singapore's Independence. The World Famous Raffles Hotel is situated in the Colonial District near to the Singapore River. In the hotel's Ashanti Bar it was customary to throw expired peanut shells directly onto the floor and at the same time to reverently sip a Singapore Sling, the national drink. The Singapore Zoo is one of the finest in the world in which the animals can roam freely, their territory being surrounded by a landscaped ditch. Approximately 2800 animals live in the spacious enclosures and even those from the world's coldest regions can be observed both below and above water, thanks to cleverly designed viewing areas. A complete mix of ethnic cultures, there's Chinatown, Little India and the Arab Street Quarter in which there are mosques, women wear burqas and there is all the hustle and bustle of a bazaar. Singapore is an exotic city of skyscrapers, a cultural melting pot and the exciting gateway to South East Asia!

NPM-DVD-116 - Nature Parks NAIVASHA KenyaSurrounded by the picturesque mountain range of Mount Longonot and located one thousand nine hundred metres above sea level, is Lake Naivasha, the highest and most beautiful lake in Kenya's Rift Valley. The Lake Naivasha region was made famous by the British painter and conservationist, Joy Adamson, who wrote the novel, Born Free, in the area. The Lake Naivasha Country Club was inaugurated in 1937. It was then called the Lake Hotel and was an important stop on the journey between Durban and London. In what is now the country club's park, passengers once disembarked from flying boats while travelling to Nairobi, situated a hundred kilometres from Lake Naivasha. In addition to great numbers of wild geese, Lake Naivasha is home to many rare and spectacular species of bird such as marabu and cormorant and the pelican also finds much nourishment in the five metre deep lake. Despite their thorny branches the leaves and flowers of the acacia trees on Crescent Island are an important source of nourishment for several animals. The island is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Lake Naivasha and is in full view of the two thousand seven hundred and seventy-six metre high summit of dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. As the sun begins to set in the twilight hours and creates a colourful natural spectacle in the sky, it is clear why Lake Naivasha has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful of all the lakes in Kenya's Rift Valley.

I-40 begins in Barstow & follows some of Route 66 through the Mojave Desert. Along the route is Newberry Springs, most don't take much notice of the 117 sq mile community, at least not until 1988 with the release of the film "Bagdad Cafe". Now, people travel from all over the globe to sit & enjoy a meal at the small, homey Cafe. If you haven't seen the film & you like surreal kinds of comedy, check it out. It's a story of lost people finding themselves.Besides the Bagdad Cafe, there are two other things that came to mind as we traveled down old Route 66, John Steinbecks, "The Grapes of Wrath" - to a short lived TV show called "Route 66"...for all too short a time, I pretend I'm in that Corvette cruising down Route 66 back in her day...Route 66 began in 1926 and was decommissioned in 1985. The 2,448 miles of highway, started in Chicago, Illinois & passed through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona & ended almost to the ocean in California.Steinbeck referred to RT 66 as "The Mother Road" in 1930 & the name stuck. In 1960, "Route 66" was a hot TV show filmed on location all over the US, along the course of the famous highway. And then there's Nat King Cole singing "Get Your Kicks On Route 66". I can think of no other road that has been immortalized more - in song & clubs, organizations & even museums.******************If you'd really like to experience all that was & is of the Mother Road, check out this site:TOUR ROUTE 66 ON A HARLEY-DAVIDSON -http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Motorcycle_Tours/route66_details.jsp?locale=en_US******************Yes, my 4-day Mother's Day weekend was wonderful! Four generations invaded Laughlin, Nevada to celebrate. 13 family members from Arizona & CA made the trek to the tri-state area, where the Mojave Desert meets the Colorado River. Ranging in age from 1 to 81!The Riverside Resort has just about everything, Although it is a gambling casino/hotel, it has many family friendly amenities - 34 lane bowling alley, six-plex movie theater, 2 arcades, 3 swimming pools and a special place for young ones called Kid Kastle. And I'm not even gonna try to count how many restaurants it has. :)On our return trip we found a little park next to the gas station, I couldn't resist climbing aboard the caboose & pretending I was on a train trip...haven't rode a train in years. :P

GTR-DVD-1124 - The picturesque harbour of Iraklion welcomes those arriving by ship at Crete's greatest city that is also the fourth largest harbour in Greece. In common with much of the history of this city, the imposing castle located at the harbour dates back to Venetian times and was built between 1523 and 1540. Today the archaeological search for ruins from the time of the ancient Minoers has become increasingly more important. In addition, work on the ruins that date from the earlier history of the town, when it was ruled by Turkey, has also gained momentum. The remains that date back to Venetian rule, such as some sections of the massive town wall and the Loggia, are part of the town's most well preserved buildings. Built between 1626 and 1628, with its classic beauty the Venetian Loggia is one of the city's most beautiful buildings. During the 17th century the aristocracy used this building as a kind of social meeting place, a club house and celebration hall. Today, it is considered to be a fine example of traditional Venetian architecture. The Morosini Fountain dates back to Venice's prosperous years. It was once part of the town's urban water supply and was named after an important civil servant. Although the city has moved with the times and developed into an important centre of tourism, it has managed to retain a significant part of its history. Thus the old town of Iraklion owes its unique flair to the splendid architectural relics of the Venetians.
