TMT-DVD-109 - COLISEUM The Coliseum of Rome is the most monumental and impressive amphitheatre in the world. It is estimated that its construction began in the year 72 AD and it was here that the Roman's desire for outrageous performance and violent entertainment were fully satisfied. The massive interior of its oval grounds could seat 70,000. Surrounded by tranquillity as though within a city wall, the Coliseum is a dominant focal point among the Roman hills. A gorge-like labyrinth of walkways and subterranean chambers descends deep into the earth, formerly occupied by gladiators, slaves and caged animals ready for the slaughter.

TVI-DVD-ROM - Roma The Eternal CityAll ways lead to Rome as people used to say, many years before Christ. The modern metropolis has become used to the flood of tourists and pilgrims from all over the world. Our mosaic starts at Piazza Venezia with its marble monument to king Emanuel II called the "Wedding cake". The Forum, Palatine, Aventine, Capitol form together with the Coliseum the core of the ancient city. The baroque period is represented by Piazza Navona and Fontana di Trevi. We will visit St Peter's basilica and the Vatican museums and the most beautiful churches too, like San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore. Rome is the only city hosting an entire sovereign state-the Vatican. Castel Sant' Angelo, Janiculum hill and the ancient quarter of Trastevere are our next stops. Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, the famous Spanish steps and many other city seclusions form a mixture one cannot see elsewhere. The everlasting city had its own water supply system as early as in 2nd BC;feeding also the giant Baths of Caracalla. Finally the Via Appia Antica will lead us to the catacombs and to the ancient port of Ostia. All this is Rome.

GTR-DVD-1061 - Tunisia Even from a distance, a monumental amphitheatre dominates the Tunisian city of El Djem, the ancient Punic settlement of Thysdrus in the heart of the later Byzantine Empire.Apart from those in Rome and Verona, this huge stone amphitheatre is the largest of its kind and a masterpiece of ancient building technique. Due to the region's climate, the impressive construction has retained its original colour and the gigantic oval structure could accommodate 30 to 40,000 spectators. Thysdrus was one of the largest cities in ancient Africa and during the 2nd and 3rd centuries B.C. was also one of the most prosperous in the Roman Empire. The cultivation of olives and the production of olive oil for Rome were the reasons for the city's prosperity that continued to flourish for many centuries. Although the amphitheatre has been used extensively as a stone quarry, it is better preserved than the Coliseum of Rome and in near-perfect condition. The wealth of the city has long since gone but its colossal heritage has been preserved forever...the fascinating amphitheatre of...El Djem !
