VPG-DVD-181 - RODOS Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodekanissa, a group of Greek islands located in the south east of the Aegean just off the west coast of Turkey. Since antiquity its unique location has brought it both power and wealth. On the northernmost tip of the island is the fascinating metropolis of Chora Ródos whose harbour entrance was once adorned by the Seventh Wonder Of The World, the Colossus Of Rhodes. But the legendary lighthouse has long since gone and today excursion boats and yachts crowd the island's former trading harbour that has a rich and dramatic past. Byzantines, Arabs, The Knights Of The Order Of St. John, Ottomans and Italians, each one influenced the ever-changing history of the island that was first settled in 400 B.C. At the city's highest point is the huge palace of the Grand Master, the monumental junction of the Street Of The Knights and the command post of the Christian order. The Grand Master was the highest dignitary of the Order Of The Knights Of Malta, a lifetime office. The Street Of The Knights leads from the Grand Master Palace down the hill to the Hospital, a unique ensemble of Gothic medieval architecture set amid the Mediterranean. The main buildings of the various groups of knights were erected along the main street and it was here that the knights met and conferred according to their membership of various European regions. Rhodes is an island steeped in history as well as the calm lifestyle of the Mediterranean.

GTR-DVD-1024 - Thebes is the legendary necropolis on the Nile's western shore. Two impressive 18m high Colossus Of Memnos watch over the entrance. It is here that The Valley of the Kings is located. Apart from the Pyramids of Gizeh, this is the most famous location in Egypt.More than 60 graves have been discovered in the necropolis including that of the great king, Ramses I. The first Egyptian ruler, Thutmosis I, was buried in the Valley Of The Kings. Prior to this, Amanophis I had prepared a secret grave in nearby rocks. In addition to the royal burial places, more then 500 private graves of priests, aristocrats and civil servants that date back from between the 11th and 26th Dynasties, have also been discovered here. In contrast to the royal graves, the portrayals and hieroglyphics that are contained in the burial places of the middle classes contain worldly objects. The everyday life of ancient Egypt is illustrated in exquisite detail. In ancient times it was believed that the addition of hieroglyphics on tomb walls and artistically designed reliefs comforted the dead on their journey through the underworld. Close by is the Valley of the Queens where over 70 tombs have been discovered. Apart from royal queens, numerous dead princes were also buried in this part of the necropolis, such as the son of Ramses III. The work of the archaeologists has not yet been completed on this site and so it is quite likely that this scared place will one day reveal more of its splendid and mysterious treasures. GTR-DVD-1118 - The Egyptian temples of Karnak are located 3 kilometres north of Luxor. The awe-inspiring Avenue Of The Sphinxes leads to the entrance of this magnificent location. It was here during more than two thousand years that the kings of numerous epochs had their final resting places. Artistically carved hieroglyphs and paintings can be found on all the buildings in Karnak. They relate to various gods and also to the royal builders of the respective temples. Pinedjem, the high priest of Amun in Thebes and Pharaoh of the 21st Dynasty, has been immortalized by a fifteen metre high colossus. The impressive courtyard of Ramses The Third's temple is flanked on three sides with imposing Osiris pillars that are adorned with hieroglyphs that depict the Pharaoh in his finest jubilee clothes. A hundred and thirty four columns, each with a circumference of ten metres, once supported the roof of the 'Great Column Hall' that has long since disappeared. Like a wonder of the world this hall contains each of the breathtaking twenty metre high columns. Even today, hieroglyphs cover a large part of the gigantic columns that originally stood in the darkness of the main temple and were covered by a massive ceiling. Due to its beautiful buildings and art treasures, the temple area of Karnak is a much-prized and unique jewel of ancient Egyptian history and culture. In 1320 the Knights Of St. John discovered an old fortified town here and immediately began to expand its fortress into the Grand Master Palace. In its present form the building is a reconstruction of the original palace that was first built on the site of a temple for the Sun King, Helios. After a total of seven Christian crusades were unable to defeat Islam and the re-conquering of Jerusalem failed, the Knights Of the Order Of St. John were driven out of Palestine. First they sought shelter in Cyprus and next conquered the island of Rhodes that was then under the rule of Portuguese pirates. To protect themselves from the Turks as well as from the pirates the new owners of the island built several mighty fortresses. Filérimos is located on the island's west coast close to the city of Rhodes. An avenue of pine trees leads to a huge concrete cross. Petaloúdes, The Valley Of Butterflies has for many years been a popular attraction for tourists who usually arrive in organised groups. A creek that contains water throughout the year flows through a narrow valley and forms romantic waterfalls, cascades and small pools. At the foot of Tsambika Mountain there's a small church, one of many that are scattered across the island. The Greek Orthodox Church and its nuns, monks and patriarchs have helped to preserve the region's language and culture. Rhodes is an island that bewitches all who experience it.

The island of Kós is known as the 'green pearl of the Aegean', an historic oasis beneath the Greek sun. Although not the largest of the Dodekannissa Islands it is certainly one of its most fascinating. The capital of the island is Chora Kós and nearly half the island's inhabitants live there. A modern collection of sculptures point to the island's most famous son., Hypocrates, whose greatest legacy is the Hippocratic Oath of today. Four kilometres from the city high in the Dikeos Mountains is one of the island's most important sights, the Asklipion, an ancient hospital and sanctuary. It was there that the Greeks worshipped the god of medicine who was later named Äskulap by the Romans. Symi is a beautiful island only four sea miles away from the Turkish coast and forty two kilometres north west of Rhodes. The island is characterised by its yellow Neo-Classical houses with their shutters and doors in blue and red as well as their tiled roofs. Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodekanissa.
