VPG-DVD-109 - BALI Bali - island of the gods and gateway to Paradise -- a relatively small island, east of Java across the Bali Strait. In recent years, luxurious hotel complexes have appeared, tastefully re-creating the island's ethnic traditions. The capital of Bali, Denpasar, is the commercial centre of the island with good shopping facilities and a fascinating variety of entertainment. Colourful dance and drama play an important part in the lives of the Bali people and almost every village has its own dance group, the favourite dance being the Barong. In the north of the island, the 1800 metre high Gunung Batur volcano is still active, its slopes covered in lava fields that extend deep into its crater. Hindu temples abound, the Kehen being one of the most beautiful terraced temples in Bali and the Pura Besakih, the most revered. As in ancient times, rice is still cultivated in the traditional way and ox and plough traverse the fields. Sun drenched beaches, cloud-kissed volcanoes, exquisite ethnic architecture and dreamy temples - it's no wonder that Bali is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in East Asia.

OTT-DVD-117 - On Tour... CIRCUMETNEA RAILROAD SICILIA Mount Etna's "VolcaFERROVIA CIRCUMETNEA Catania is the end of the line for a small railroad that encircles Mount Etna, the Ferrovia Circumetnea. In the heart of Catania various remnants that date back to Roman times indicate the glorious past of the second largest city in Sicily although its origins are far older. The journey around Mount Etna begins in the small and unspectacular station of the privately owned Ferrovia Circumetnea narrow gauge railway. The railroad once travelled to Catania's harbour and today the line ends in the middle of the city. However, the simplicity of this railroad belies the fact that a journey along it is an absolute must! A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. The history of the railroad around Mount Etna began at the end of the nineteenth century when it was important that Sicily's remote cities had ready access to the seaport of Catania.. The journey on the Ferrovia Circumetnea travels through some exceptionally beautiful scenery that contains a number of picturesque farms. The land owes its fertility to Mount Etna as, despite its destructive force, the fertile volcanic ground is ideal for agriculture. Large quantities of carbon dioxide are constantly emitted from Etna's crater. However, the crater's white smoke is normally quite harmless. Even though the volcano is active throughout the year eruptions are still relatively rare and the last large eruption was in 2002. Just like a good wine a ride on the Ferrovia Circumetnea improves with age. This must be the most atmospheric way in which to discover the remarkable Mount Etna!

NPM-DVD-142 - In the north of Tanzania is one of Africa's finest natural landscapes, the Serengeti. From endless grass covered savannahs to dense rain forests the large variety of landscapes as well as many species of wildlife is really quite remarkable. The Massai have retained their age-old traditions and the pastures at the bottom of the Ngorongoro Crater are ideal for their herds of cattle. The two hundred and sixty square kilometre Ngorongoro Crater is not only a wonder of nature but also home to an impressive number of animals. The bottom of the crater is covered with grass and several watering holes provide a perfect habitat for large herds of wild animals. In the second half of the twentieth century two British archaeologists and anthropologists made several striking discoveries in the region. In the Oldupai Canyon they discovered a Hominid skull that made both explorers world famous as the almost two million year old skull was the oldest prehistoric discovery of human existence ever found. Each morning two balloons take off from the Massai Kopjes in the centre of the National Park on a one hour journey above the Serengeti. Depending on wind and weather conditions the balloon rises to an altitude of more than three hundred metres above sea level. The pilots often navigate their balloons close to the ground and just above the treetops when most of the animals run away at the sight of the hot air balloon and the strange sound caused by its burner. Gazelles, gnus and buffalo crowd into their favourite pastureland that is usually located close to various watering holes while vultures are always to be found close to the herds and are always ready to take advantage of a dead or dying animal. The Serengeti - a symbol of a paradise that may not last forever and a world full of primeval beauty and natural wonder.

NPM-DVD-126 - The largest volcanic crater in the world, Haleakalä, is the main tourist attraction on Maui, one of the Hawaiian islands and a fascinating natural monument and protected area. Several steep bends lead up the volcanic mountain and the dense green jungle is a wonderful sight to start the day. Haleakaläh has been a national park since 1916. Covering 1,890 square kilometres, Maui is the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. More than eighty thousand people live on the island that in 1959 became the fiftieth state in the USA. The archipelago is formed by more than twenty islands which form a chain that stretches for 600 km. Geographically, Maui consists of two parts. It was formed by two volcanoes, the lava from which flowed into a valley and almost united the island as a complete mass. The island has therefore been partially divided. Thus, Maui is also known as Valley Island. Deservedly, this enchanting island has the reputation of being, 'Maui No Ka Oi', that means 'Maui Is The Most Beautiful!' and, without a doubt, it is indeed a truly remarkable Paradise on Earth!

7DY-DVD-163 - Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and is located slightly south of the Equator. Its large variety of nature is overwhelming and includes the Serengeti and Selous Nature Reserves, the snow-covered Kilimanjaro and the spice island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. It is a country of superlatives that originated in 1964 as a result of the union of two independent countries, Tanganika and Zanzibar. On the slopes of Meru and Kilimanjaro, coffee, maize, bananas and vegetables are grownand then offered for sale at various markets. Due to its fertile volcanic soil the entire region has been used for agriculture since the middle of the nineteenth century by both the Arusha Massai and Meru tribes. The Arusha National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Africa and its green forests are a perfect playground for the countless monkeys that live there. Around twenty million years ago its landscape was created due to volcanic activity and wonderful craters were formed as well as impressive volcanic cones. The swampy forest on the slopes of the Rift Valley features more than thirty different varieties of tree, an impressive area that offers distant views across fascinating and untouched nature and for the many wealthy tourists who spend their money in the region there are various special locations that provide excellent accommodation. The origins of the Selous Game Reserve date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. Later, under British rule, they were united into a large protected area. Tanzania is a natural paradise that is still known by only a few. An exotic country and one that is still waiting to be explored!

7DY-DVD-110 - The Hawaiian Islands are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and form the 50th state of the USA. In the south east of the island of O'Ahu, Honolulu is a modern town and the starting point for most journeys. It also contains the Iolani Palace - once the residence of King David Kalakana -a magnificent Victorian structure in the centre of Honolulu and the only royal palace in the United States. In Pearl Harbour, a museum commemorates the events of the seventh of December 1941 when most of the American Pacific fleet was destroyed by the Japanese. The valley of Nuuanu Pali is of great importance in Hawaiian history. It was here that a deciding battle took place, when King Kamehameh came from Maui and triumphantly drove the troops of the chief of Oahu into the mountains, the result of which formed the political union of the Hawaiian Islands. In winter, the world's best surfers collect on Sunset Beach, attracted by spectacular waves, some of which reach as high as the tallest church steeples. On the island of Kaua'i, the Wailua is Hawaii's only navigable river and it flows through some of the exciting locations which were used for Jurassic Park, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Blue Hawaii. Two volcanoes dominate the extraordinary island of Maui, which also features sandy beaches, green pastures, dense jungle and a bleak lunar-like landscape. On Waimea Beach in 1778, the English sea captain, James Cook, was the first European to set foot on Hawaiian territory. The Waimea Canyon was referred to by Mark Twain as 'The Grand Canyon of the Pacific', a massive gorge which has been carved out of the volcanic landscape by the Waimea River. From a Victorian style station there is the narrow-gauge Sugar Cane Train which travels through the once prolific sugar plantations of Kaanapali.Haleakale is the world's largest dormant volcano with a crater as large as Manhattan. But nowhere else in the world can volcanoes be studied as safely as on Big Island in the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park The Hawaiian Islands...priceless pearls in the Pacific Ocean.
