VPG-DVD-217 - WACHAU Our journey across Wachau begins in Stein, a town district of Krems, one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The sole 'Gateway Into The Wachau' is a unique region of the Danube between Krems-Stein and Melk. A total of a hundred and thirteen houses encapsulate the medieval city that was built along the Steiner Road on the banks of the Danube. Today the town's facades and entrance-ways are decorated in traditional style and compliment the impressive Renaissance splendour of the buildings. A little further on and the river valley narrows and becomes even more beautiful. The blue-white church tower of Dürnstein proudly welcomes those who visit the town. It is a landmark of the Wachau. This small medieval town nestles picturesquely along the rock walls above the Danube and it lives and breathes the history that made it world famous. The beauty of the landscape is overwhelming. Colour dominates the soft hollows between the rocky slopes that flank the Danube Valley and the shining green of the summer months leads to a spectacle of colour that leads up to the wine harvest, a true spectacle of nature! Thirty-six kilometres of the Danube Valley with magnificent cities, castles and historic ruins, a Baroque monastery and an old vine-growing culture. The Wachau, a priceless gem situated alongside the far-stretching waters of the Danube.

VPG-DVD-170 - BUDAPEST Budapest, capital of Hungary, is the pearl of the Danube and a constantly changing metropolis. Hungary was once a kingdom but then came the Turks who were followed by the Habsburgs and Maria Theresia who became 'Queen of Hungary'. The historic centre of Budapest is dominated by its noble castle that towers above the banks of the Danube. A one hundred metre long cable railway that dates back to 1870 is both a practical and fascinating way to ascend the hill to the castle. Each day the area around the castle, the Fischerbastel, that has never played a military role, attracts large numbers of tourists. Margareten Island is set amid the Danube and is Budapest's vast entertainment area. It was at its most colourful during the Romantic period of the 18th and 19th centuries when it was a meeting place for poets, philosophers and artists. A small hotel was built for its creative community and it became an island of artists and dreamers. In the area of the city called Pest there is a splendid building with a mighty cupola, The Parliament, the city's main landmark and an important part of Hungary's historic past. In 1867 Buda and Pest were acknowledged by the Emperor as the seat of the Hungarian government with its own parliament. The building resembles London's Houses of Parliament. Hungary is a fusion of two different cultural regions as indicated by its architecture and lifestyle and it is very much where the order of the Occident unites with the calmness of the Orient.

OTT-DVD-122 - On Tour... BLUE DANUBE CRUISE WACHAUBLUE DANUBE CRUISE WACHAU Wachau is a World Heritage Sight, a thirty-six long combination of cultivated landscape and the blue and mighty Danube. A boat journey on the famous river is the ideal way of observing the captivating villages and splendid wine growing terraces along its banks. The old town of Stein extends along a narrow section of the river with attractive buildings set amid atmospheric lanes in which beautifully restored facades shine out in the bright sunlight. Krems was first mentioned in 995 A.D and its main square contains several impressive houses that once belonged to the city's middle class inhabitants. The facades of the 16th and 18th century buildings are historic treasures, one of which was the birthplace of the mother of Franz Liszt. In Weissenkirchen where the Granite Gneiss Plateau, its rock formations and Bohemian forests reach down to the river, are fertile terraces on which grow Austria's most famous wine. The wine is beautifully balanced and its appealing lightness and gentle acidity are what make it so popular. In spite of devastating fires in 1793, Weissenkirchen is now one of the most picturesque villages of the Wachau. The village of Spitz lies in the heart of the Wachau and is closely associated with steam navigation that was first used on the Danube in 1829. The Danube Valley enjoys a temperate climate and strong vines flourish on the slopes of Tausendeimer Mountain. The Danube Valley of the Wachau is a romantic gem set amid a glorious landscape.

NPM-DVD-109 - Nature Parks THE DANUBE DELTA RomaniaThe Danube Delta, the second largest in Europe after that of the Volga, is located in the north east of the Dobrudscha and covers a total area of 4,152 km². Two thirds of it is in Romania, the remainder being in the Ukraine. The river, that in some areas is covered by reed, water lilies and numerous plant life, also boasts a large variety of rare birds such as the pelican, heron and cormorant that live side by side with seagulls, wild duck, geese, falcon and eagles that live in the willow forests. Since time immemorial, each day the waters of the Danube have washed 185,000 tons of mud into this coastal lake and also into the Black Sea and this has gradually created today's delta that divides into two large sections: the River Delta in the West and the Fluvial Maritime Delta in the East. Protecting the land from the water, the sturdy banks of the river are natural dikes beyond which the local inhabitants have built their small, reed-covered homes most of which are located ten to fifteen metres from the water's edge. The Delta's landscape possesses an ever-changing face across which both land and water constantly interact, each season of the year bringing its own special magic to the ever-changing beauty of this richly alluvial region. The tributaries are flanked by rows of willows and poplars and dragonflies vie from side to side of the shallow lakes. The Danube Delta's tributaries, lakes, forests, vegetation, birds and fish combine to create an indescribable feeling of solitude on each of its intriguing watery horizons.

GTR-DVD-1123 - In 1867, after many centuries of Habsburger rule, the kingdom of Hungary was finally acknowledged as an official State and a parliament was appointed. London's Houses Of Parliament served as the model for Budapest's new parliament building. The idea was to emphasise to the Hungarian people the positive way that both democracy and the monarchy could be part of the same political system. The magnificent shape of the Budapest Parliament is similar to a palace. Two bronze lions decorate the steps that lead to the main entrance of the splendid government building that symbolised the hopes of a new kingdom. With its 700 rooms and total floor space of 473,000 square metres, for many decades this was the greatest building in the world. And even with its powerful proportions, the Budapest Parliament radiates elegance and grace. At night this architectural symbol of the Hungarian people with its 100 metre high cupolas, lights up the capital and also the dark waters of the Danube. GTR-DVD-1193 - The fine buildings of the Benedictine monastery of Melk majestically rise up from a plateau above the fascinating town on the River Danube. The elegant, yellow buildings of the monastery have become well-known far beyond Austria. The monastery's eighteen hundred manuscripts are extremely valuable and although many treasures were destroyed by a devastating fire the oldest texts date back to the early 9th century. The 18th century marked the beginning of extensive construction work in the monastery that subsequently transformed the church into an enchanting example of Baroque design. The exquisite design of the church's splendid interior was mostly the work of Italian architect, Antonio Beduzzi. But it is the remarkable architecture of the central Baroque buildings that have given Melk its reputation as being an icon of occidental monastery culture. Budapest's castle district has developed into the Hungarian capital's main attraction, most notably, Fishermen's Bastion that was built between 1890 and 1905. The greater part of the Gothic, Matthias Cathedral, dates back to the 19th century but of the 16th century buildings, only their foundations remain. Following its original construction in the 14th century, Matthias Cathedral became the setting of several royal coronations. Due to numerous military conflicts, the entire Gothic area of the city was destroyed. The buildings and facades that can be seen today belong mainly to the Hungarian Baroque era. Deep underground, a several kilometre long maze cuts through the city's hill. The basements of many buildings are connected to this tunnel system, therefore allowing visitors easy access to a seemingly never-ending system of fascinating passages. The Turkish conquerors used these subterranean passages and caves, that were created among thermal springs and waterways, and extended them for military use. During the hours of evening, Buda's streets and archways radiate a magnificent light that is a wonderful contrast to the wonderful ambience of this city during the day.
