VPG-DVD-172 - YUCATÁN It is in Uxmal where historic Mexico is at its most beautiful and that our journey through the millennia begins, along the Yucatan Peninsula, land of Maya culture. The Cuadrángulo De Los Monjas comprises four buildings with many entrances that lead into various small rooms, typical of Puuc architecture. The forty two metre high Fortune Teller Pyramid is situated in the centre of the complex and the main entrance to the Nuns' Quadrangle dates back to the 9th century and is flanked on both sides by columned halls. Since the 10th century the remains of the Pre-Columbian architecture of Chichen Itza have combined two cultures, the Maya and the Toltecs. The total number of steps that lead up to the temple, including those on each of its four sides, number an amazing three hundred and sixty five - one for each day of the year! The facades of its buildings are adorned with mosaics. Geometrical ornaments alternate with images of numerous deities and the heads of fantastic animals. Today, the Isla Del Cozumel, an island close to Yucatan, is the destination of luxurious cruise liners that lay anchor so that passengers can enjoy the local scenery. Whether feathered or scaled, the abundant variety of Yucatan's animal kingdom is a fascinating sight both above and below water. The turquoise coloured water of the bay makes it possible to view the seabed to a depth of thirty metres. Women in traditional costume prepare tortillas: what Cortez once referred to as a 'corn pancake' is today an international favourite. Daily routine is just as it was hundreds of years ago and each season of the year determines the daily work of the rural population. Ancient culture and snow white sandy beaches, this is the YUCATAN Peninsula!

VPG-DVD-124 - DUBAI Dubai is a fairy-tale holiday paradise with romantic desert scenery and a long history. Like an ancient kingdom from the 'One Thousand And One Nights' it's the second largest state in the United Arab Emirates located on the northern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The trading of dates, goats, pearls and fish brought the city much prosperity and it gradually developed into the largest trading centre in the Near East. Maritime life has always played a significant role in the lives of those who live on the Arabian Gulf. With its triangular sails and a design that has remained unchanged for thousands of years, the dhow still sails these waters. Hundreds of them lie at anchor close to the old town on the banks of Dubai Creek. No other city in the United Arab Emirates possesses so many fascinating contrasts. But the past is gradually merging with the present and portrays a new and harmonious image. Dubai's impressive silhouette is in stark contrast to the desert sand and sparkling sea. The Deira district owes its prosperity to the various souks that were established there in the 19th century. At this time Dubai was already an important trading city with almost seven thousand inhabitants. The number of stalls in the souk rose to more than three hundred and a modest tax was imposed for the coffers of the local Sheikh. Amid the desert surroundings in front of the city gates is the Nad Al Sheba Camel Course where the intrepid creatures of the desert are trained during the winter months, the jockeys being young boys from Somalia and Pakistan. Dusty gravel roads lead into the Hajar Mountains, part of the splendid mountain landscape in the eastern section of the Emirates. Dubai's skyline has a new landmark, the Burj Al Arab, the only hotel in the world to have been awarded no less than seven stars! Built on a Man made island its design is that of a sail bent by the wind. Dubai: the height of luxury amid the desert sand - a glittering fairytale of the 21st century.

VPG-DVD-202 BANEPA VALLEY Twenty-six kilometres south east of Kathmandu is the Banepa Valley, a captivating place that allures with its beautiful landscape and village sanctuaries. Legend has it that a terrible demon, Chanda, once ruled over the valley. The local people pleaded with Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas, to free them from the monster. Parvati overpowered the demon and was given the name, Chadeshvari, Mistress of the Chanda. Thus she became one of the maternal Newar deities. Eight kilometres south of Banepa and located between two rivers is the Newar settlement of Panauti. It is the most important historic village in the Valley. In the 13th century Paunauti was the capital of the autonomous kingdom of Banepa and the village has retained its historic authenticity. The village is full of rural calm. Only in September is the idyll disturbed by the 'Carriage Festival'. The shops contain all essential household goods. The transport of both goods and humans is usually done by lorry. They ply their way up and down relentlessly along the demanding terrain. The daily market also contains a good selection of products where fresh fruit and vegetables are in abundance. Life in Nepal is dominated by religion. It is a combination of magical, mystical and spiritual ideas that are closely interwoven. Buddhists and Hindus share many of the sanctuaries as they are very tolerant and not divided as in other religions. Each year the fascinating Banepa Valley set amid the Himalayas allures thousands of visitors with its impressive mountain landscape, ancient culture and the deep mystical religious faith of its people that is still very much alive today.

OTT-DVD-105 - A cruise on the Nile in the wake of the ancient Egyptians, an adventure into the world of the Pharaohs and the exploration of their mammoth culture. A three-kilometre avenue of sphinxes leads from Luxor to Karnak. Built during the reigns of Ramses the 2nd and Amenophis the 3rd, this impressive avenue was dedicated to three gods of Thebes. The façade of the 260 metre long temple is decorated with six huge statues of Ramses. At night, the temple complex has an air of mystique. and light casts ghostly shadows all around as fearsome monuments gaze into infinity. At its zenith, a million people inhabited Thebes. The necropolis covers 25 km² and the graves of 64 kings, queens and those in High Office have been discovered there. With the exception of Amenophis, each of the pharaohs of the new realm was buried in the necropolis, as well as the legendary, Tutanchamun. Edfu with its tower, outer walls, buildings and halls is still in almost perfect condition and at its entrance royal falcons carved from granite stand guard. Its walls are an authentic history book of Egyptian myth and legend. The Egyptian gods are everywhere as impressive statues, fragile carvings and paintings. Kom Ombo is a temple complex for two deities, Horus the Falcon and Sobek the Crocodile. The mummified holy crocodiles are stored in a special chamber. Indeed, cemeteries have been discovered that contain thousands of mummified dogs, cats, baboons and crocodiles. While walking from chamber to chamber it's like travelling back in time for thousands of years. The journey on the Nile leads to the archaeological excavation site of Philae, on the island of Agilika. This island, with its fantastic temple complexes, was once the pearl of Egypt. The stone witnesses on the river banks stand silently as the boat continues on its journey further into Egypt, an impressive country that has an amazing ancient history and a modern awareness of its glorious past.

OTT-DVD-122 - On Tour... BLUE DANUBE CRUISE WACHAUBLUE DANUBE CRUISE WACHAU Wachau is a World Heritage Sight, a thirty-six long combination of cultivated landscape and the blue and mighty Danube. A boat journey on the famous river is the ideal way of observing the captivating villages and splendid wine growing terraces along its banks. The old town of Stein extends along a narrow section of the river with attractive buildings set amid atmospheric lanes in which beautifully restored facades shine out in the bright sunlight. Krems was first mentioned in 995 A.D and its main square contains several impressive houses that once belonged to the city's middle class inhabitants. The facades of the 16th and 18th century buildings are historic treasures, one of which was the birthplace of the mother of Franz Liszt. In Weissenkirchen where the Granite Gneiss Plateau, its rock formations and Bohemian forests reach down to the river, are fertile terraces on which grow Austria's most famous wine. The wine is beautifully balanced and its appealing lightness and gentle acidity are what make it so popular. In spite of devastating fires in 1793, Weissenkirchen is now one of the most picturesque villages of the Wachau. The village of Spitz lies in the heart of the Wachau and is closely associated with steam navigation that was first used on the Danube in 1829. The Danube Valley enjoys a temperate climate and strong vines flourish on the slopes of Tausendeimer Mountain. The Danube Valley of the Wachau is a romantic gem set amid a glorious landscape.

GTR-DVD-1180 - Valle Dei Templi or, The Valley Of Temples, contains the sacred sites and ruins of the ancient city of Akragas, today's Agrigento. Due to the transformation of a number of its temples into Christian churches, the greater part of Sicily's ancient sanctuaries have managed to survive to the present day. The ruins of the Zeus Temple are in stark contrast to the modern high rise settlements of Agrigento that are situated on the opposite side of the valley. The sanctuary is without a doubt one of the largest temples of its kind and was built by Theron in the 5th century B.C. The majestic Concordia Temple dates back to 425 B.C. and is one of the most well-preserved sanctuaries of Ancient Greece. The return to the aesthetic and textual ideals of Classic times could not have found a worthier or more splendid setting than the beautiful Valle Dei Templi. GTR-DVD-1127 - Today, the Egyptian city of Kom Ombo has approximately 70,000 inhabitants. Its outstanding double temple has made it famous throughout the world. Today, the mummified remains of ancient Nile crocodiles are displayed within a chapel that was once dedicated to the goddess, Hathor. These great reptiles were worshipped as sacred animals. One half of the double temple belonged to the crocodile-headed deity, Sobek, the son of Hathor. Today's Kom Ombo Temple was divided into two asymmetric parts by its Ptolemaic builders. Within the right section of the building, Sobek was worshipped, while the left half was dedicated to Haroeris. The external surrounding wall of the temple contains several strange pictures and reliefs including portrayals of early medical instruments. A kind of medicine cupboard was carved into the stone. It shows highly developed medical implements, among them a variety of surgical instruments and even forceps. The profession of doctor was popular and widespread throughout ancient Egypt. However, the Gods were also called upon as soon as there was illness as it was believed that medicine alone could not provide a cure. Images of numerous Egyptian rulers adorn the walls. Queen Cleopatra, the legendary last Ptolemaic sovereign, was also immortalized here. Outside the temple there is a "Birth House" next to the small Hathor Chapel. The Mammisi contains the remarkable portrayal of a nursing mother. During the Ptolemaic period each temple contained a Mammisi that was decorated with portrayals and hieroglyphs. Here, the birth of the children of the gods was celebrated. Due to the ancient relics and the double temple of Kom Ombo we have been able to gain an even greater understanding of Egypt's fascinating past. GTR-DVD-1160 - South of the centre of Crete are the remains of a ruined basilica, the Christian remains of Gortys' former glory. For the construction of the basilica in the 6th and the 7th centuries many of the architectural elements of the surrounding ancient ruins were also used. During construction there was no lack of decorative old capitals, as Gortys was once one of the most important cities in Crete.Gortys became famous among archaeologists due to a sensational discovery within the walls of a nearby Roman Odeion. Twelve stone blocks that bore inscriptions from the Classical period of around 500 years B.C. were built into the wall of a small amphitheatre by its Roman creators. The stones contained sections of the great legal code of Gortys. In using this material the Romans managed to preserve one of the best kept legal texts of ancient Greece.Although nature has buried many of its treasures, even today a few magnificent statues still manage to reflect the former size and wealth of the city of Gortys.Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. GTR-DVD-1194 - For thousands of years the ruins of the magnificent temples in the Valle Dei Templi have risen up from the ancient city of Akragas and today Agrigento is now one of the most well known and most visited places in Sicily. In addition to the temple districts, in recent years the medieval centre of Agrigento with its narrow and romantic lanes has attracted an increasing number of visitors. In the 3rd century B.C. Akragas was conquered by the Carthaginians and later by the Romans, Byzantines and Arabs and over the years the size of the legendary ancient Polis was gradually reduced to that of a village. But Agrigento enjoyed a further period of prosperity under the Norman King, Roger The Second, who declared it a diocesan town. The classical splendour of the ancient temples of Agrigento leave an indelible impression in the memories of all those who experience them.
