VPG-DVD-179 - LONDON London is an exciting and pulsating metropolis of the new millennium, a melting pot of both people and culture and a fascinating city of diverse contrasts. The City Of London contains the Tower, an historic landmark with a remarkable history. A mighty mediaeval fortress with thirteen towers that throughout its nine hundred years has served many functions and from the Middle Ages was a heavily fortified prison. After the medieval St. Paul`s Cathedral was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1666, Christopher Wren was ordered to re-build it with a dome. During the thirty-six years of its construction its design was frequently altered until finally a wonderful masterpiece of church architecture was created. The Monument is the city's tallest freestanding stone column and a reminder of the Great Fire Of London that destroyed four fifths of the city. In four days and nights more than thirteen thousand buildings were destroyed and the Monument was built on the site of the bakery in which the fire began. Since the reign of Queen Victoria, Buckingham Palace has served as London's royal residence. A garden of mulberry trees once grew on the site of today's palace and the Duke Of Buckingham subsequently added a simple brick built residence. Around sixty years later George II purchased the site for his wife and George IV eventually began to design an extensive palace complex. The highlight of any holiday in London must be the largest Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye. Situated on the banks of the Thames it rises high into the sky opposite the Houses Of Parliament and Big Ben. The former centre of the largest empire in the world, London is still a city of superlatives that attracts millions of visitors each year. VPG-DVD-145 - KYKLÁDES Otherwise known as The Pearls Of Greece, the Cyclades Islands are located in the heart of the South Aegean that flows around its former centre, the holy island of Delos. Of more than two hundred and twenty islands, only twenty-five are populated. Situated in the centre of the Cyclades group of islands, Mykonos is a former pirate village and for some years has been a meeting place for artists, V.I.P.'s and the international glitterati. Five old windmills dominate the picturesque bay of Mykonos. In earlier times the town's millers supplied flour to soldiers, merchants and even pirates. A special attraction is the district of Little Venice, the style of its buildings serving as a reminder of when the Venetians took possession of the island. Delos is known as the Pompeii of the Aegean and its deserted temples, public buildings, houses and streets still conjure up the atmosphere of this once-flourishing cultural and trading town. On Naxos, the largest of the Greek islands, the Greek gods have created a masterpiece of nature with bubbling springs and gently-flowing streams, colourful fields and fertile valleys and an abundance of water, fruit and vegetables. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades islands and the location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis. It's also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light. The unique proportions of Santorini are due to a natural disaster that had a devastating effect when over 3,500 years ago a volcanic eruption sank most of the island beneath the sea. Was it not the Greek god, Poseidon, who threw a handful of rocks onto the seabed that took root and created the Cyclades? It is no wonder that these dreamy islands are a place of myth and legend!

VPG-DVD-214 - KÓS Kós is an historic island oasis beneath the Greek sun. Not the largest of the Dodekannissa Islands but certainly one of its most fascinating, with endless sandy beaches and an ancient heritage. The capital of the island is Chora Kós and for two thousand years it has been the nerve centre of the island. The city once suffered devastating earthquakes and the island was plagued by numerous invaders including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, the Knights of St. John and finally, the Turks. The Platia Eleftherìas is the main square of today's Kós and contains the Archaeological Museum that is housed in a futuristic looking Italian building that dates back to the 1930's. Four kilometres from the city high in the Dikeos Mountains is one of the island's most important sights, the Asklipion, an ancient hospital and sanctuary. A winding road leads to the village of Kéfalos that from below looks like a small fortified complex. Its white houses and narrow alleys are free of traffic and it's as though time has stood still. Formerly a village of fishermen, agriculture is now the main source of income for the local people. Kéfalos has much historical significance as it was built on the ruins of the first capital of the island and Hypocrates was born here in 460 B.C. Antimáchia Castle was built in the 13th century by the Venetians and later expanded by the Knights Of St. John. Its mighty external walls are most impressive but only a few cisterns and two small chapels remain. Fascinating landscapes and the historic monuments of many époques make the Greek island of Kós a sparkling jewel of the Aegean.

VPG-DVD-223 - AMMAN Amman is an historic metropolis in which ancient times and modern life meet face to face and where poverty and wealth live side by side. At first sight the city's ancient roots are not obvious, however, they date back to Biblical times. Abdoun is one of the city's modern city districts. For many years the city's former suburbs have been integrated into the megalopolis thus they now cover several additional hills. The slopes are crowded with modern, bright terraced houses and villas constructed of limestone and a modern infrastructure connects the residential districts with the old town at the foot of the hills. The King Abdullah Mosque is the largest and, due to its striking blue cupola, the most beautiful mosque in Amman. Although only completed in 1988 it is an important symbol of Islam. In 1900 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of the Hedjaz Railroad that was designed to unite the Ottoman Empire that had begun to disintegrate as well as to transport Moslem pilgrims to Medina in the Hedjaz Mountains. The monarchs who ruled over this land have been many and both earthquakes and fire have devastated its buildings. But Amman has managed to survive and now continues to be a prosperous and vibrant metropolis.

In Weissenkirchen where the Granite Gneiss Plateau, its rock formations and Bohemian forests reach down to the river, are fertile terraces on which grow Austria's most famous wine. The wine is beautifully balanced and its appealing lightness and gentle acidity are what make it so popular. In spite of devastating fires in 1793, Weissenkirchen is now one of the most picturesque villages of the Wachau. The village of Spitz lies in the heart of the Wachau and is closely associated with steam navigation that was first used on the Danube in 1829. The Danube Valley enjoys a temperate climate and strong vines flourish on the slopes of Tausendeimer Mountain. The Danube Valley of the Wachau is a romantic gem set amid a glorious landscape.

GTR-DVD-1126 - The former summer palace of the Late Empire Dynasty of Yihe Yuan is located among the northwestern outskirts of the Chinese capital of Peking. It is also known as 'The Garden of Harmonious Pleasures'. However, a number of buildings have managed to survive the ravages of time. In1860 the Opium Wars reached the summer palace of Yihe Yuan. Western colonial troupes devastated the Chinese Garden and destroyed numerous buildings. Reconstruction of the pavilion was due to the Emperor's widow, Cixi. After the death of her husband, Ianfeng, in 1861, the empress took control of the empire and subsequently ordered the restoration of the buildings that were destroyed during the OpiumWars. The dominant 'Longevity Hill', known as Wanshou Shan, is crowned by a 41 metre high pavilion, The Tower Of Buddhist Virtue that was built in 1750. For many years a cruise on Kunming Lake has not been reserved solely for the former family of the emperor as it is now frequented by tourists from around the world. The widow's favourite haunt was the Marble Boat from which she enjoyed the magnificent view across the lake. In spite of past military destruction, the natural beauty of the elegant gardens of the Yihe Yuan Palace has been extremely well preserved. The origin of today's bishop's town dates back to 1346 and after Turku it is the second oldest town in Finland. GTR-DVD-1225 - The mighty Olavinlinna Castle rises majestically above the picturesque lakeland scenery of Savonlinna in southern Finland, a former border region that was once the scene of many a bloody battle. The location of the fortress was well chosen as for many centuries the strategically-placed castle on the small granite island had to withstand attack from the Russian army. Large sections of the castle have been extensively restored and transformed into two museums. The History Museum contains various finds that relate to the history of Olavinlinna. Unfortunately, none of the castle's original wooden furniture and fittings have survived and several devastating fires destroyed much of the castle's internal décor in the 19th century. The Orthodox Museum contains a large number of icons and cult objects of the Russian Orthodox Church and highlight the cultural influence that the Russians had on the castle. Each June the Olavinlinna Courtyard is transformed into the main venue of the renowned Savonlinna Opera Festival. The festival is also famous beyond Finland and is one of the crowning highlights of Europe's summer festivals. Thanks to its annual cultural events, Olavinlinna Castle is now a tranquil and historic setting for one and all. GTR-DVD-1085 - Kungliga Slottet is a majestic royal castle that is located on the highest point of the island of Stadsholmen in the middle of the attractive historical old town of Stockholm known as Gamla Stan. The castle became an official royal residence when Swedish monarch, King Adolf Fredrik, resided there. With its 608 rooms the castle is considered to be one of the greatest royal residences in the world and home to the Swedish crown jewels. The design of the Royal castle and its splendid facade was created by the architect, Nicodemus Tessin The Younger. His father, Nicodemus The Elder, built the Tre Kronor Castle at the end of the 17th century which was named after the three crowns that are depicted in the Swedish coat of arms. In 1697 a devastating fire swept through Stockholm and also the Tre Kronor Castle. Shortly after the fire, the castle of Kungliga Slottet, designed in Italian Baroque style, rose up from the ruins of Tre Kronor Castle. For more than 250 years the cityscape of Sweden's capital of Stockholm would not have been complete without the splendour of Kungliga Slottet. GTR-DVD-1101 - Around 7 kilometres southeast of Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete, is the Palace of Knossós, the largest of all the Minoan palaces, located on the picturesque, partly tree-covered Kefala Hill. As parts of the palace have been rebuilt, its former splendour makes a visit to Knossós even more worthwhile. At the beginning of the 20th century, large scale excavations of the former Minoan palace were carried out under the leadership of Englishman, Arthur Evans. In just three years, Evans and his team of archaeologists excavated an area of almost 20,000 square metres. Visitors can move around the newly built areas of the palace and imagine the former life of the Minoans. Almost all of the palace's 1200 rooms and splendid inner courtyards are asymmetrical which is in contrast to the subsequent Ancient Greek epochs of strict symmetrical architecture. As with other Minoan palaces in Phaistos and Malia, around 1700 B.C., the first palace in Knossós was destroyed by a devastating earthquake. Around 100 years later, the palace was rebuilt and was simply known as the 'New Palace'. These buildings have also been referred to as the 'Labyrinth of the Minotaurs'. But if the legendary Minotaurs actually resided in the Palace of Knossós, it has yet to be confirmed by the world of archaeology!
