VPG-DVD-135 - TUNISIAN OASIS Gabes is the beginning of a journey through what is the fascinating oasis of Tunisia that contains all the mystique of the Orient: art, culture, history and endless desert horizons. The Ghorfas of Medenine boast a variety of souvenir shops and in the past the multi-floored mud buildings served as dwellings and storage areas for the semi-nomads of the region. A Ghorfa is a collection of buildings that form part of large complexes with hundreds of buildings grouped together around large courtyards. Surrounded by desert is the sleepy village of Douz that was once a thriving camel trading centre. Now it contains markets and is also the location of the famous Sahara Festival. The Torra Ruins in Mansurah are a further highlight of the journey across the Tunisian oasis. The sun beats down relentlessly on the boundless Sahara and individual palm trees appear as green guardians of the oasis. Tozeur, the 'Eden Of The Desert', is a safe haven for almost twenty villages. Its unique architecture is highly impressive and the walls of its houses consist of loam bricks that form geometrical patterns. Nefta's new town with its nearby souk quarter is situated in the east. On the western side is the older district with its sacred buildings and twisting alleys. For more than a thousand years the town has been the religious centre of a mystic Moslem sect known as the Sufis. As the shadows of evening begin to fall and the light of the setting sun illuminates the Tunisian oasis in a spectacular purple light this everything combines to make this a most memorable and atmospheric experience.

VPG-DVD-160 - BHAKTAPUR Bhaktapur, also known as 'the city of the pious' is the third of the ancient royal cities in the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley in the Kingdom of Nepal and also a Unesco World Heritage Sight. On both sides of Durbar Square are many precious art treasures but the city is also fully-functional and a 'car free' open air museum! The medieval city derived from a fortress complex and was later transformed into a palace area. At the western end of Durbar Square is Dvarikanath Mandir, a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. Today a huge pair of lions flank the entrance to the National Art Gallery and there are images of Hanuman and Narasimha. Vatsala Devi Mandir is a temple with a square, three-tiered base. This sacred building has a corridor set around a central Shikhara tower and its stairway is flanked by elephants and two fantastic horses. The number of the city's small temples, shrines and dwellings of the gods is many and complex and they can be found at each crossroads and in every courtyard and doorway. Bhaktapur has also been immortalized in the movie, Little Buddha. For those interested in culture the Kingdom of Nepal is a dream destination and Bhaktapur is a truly atmospheric journey into a rich and golden past.

TMT-DVD-118 - PETRA Hidden amid the Wadi Musa, the Valley Of Moses in South Jordan, is one of the most fascinating and mysterious ruins on Earth, the legendary rock city of Petra. A desert tribe, the Nabateans, once established a settlement in the shelter of the rocks and founded a splendid royal city that has survived to the present day. For many centuries their sanctuaries and dwellings that had been carved into the rock fell into oblivion until they were later rediscovered. Several ancient paths lead through one of the most fascinating metropolis' of ancient times and a seemingly hostile desert world of rock yet full of the fascinating remains a legendary people. Before the Nabateans built this splendid rock city within the desert they first had to organise a supply of water. With great technical skill they succeeded in diverting the water from distant springs along the walls of narrow canyons and into the city. Even today Petra has a unique and magical atmosphere and both the local Bedouin tribes as well as those who visit cannot fail but be impressed by it. The legendary rock town of the Nabateans provides a remarkable insight into a bygone epoch of the Near East that continues to be full of historic mystique.

NPM-DVD-133 - The Petrified Forest National Park is located in Arizona in the USA. Long ago the region was covered by a dense forest and mighty rivers cut across the terrain. Water caused by heavy flooding forced dead trees to float to a low lying swampland. In the deep quagmire of the swamp and having, in effect, been hermitically sealed, the trees were subsequently covered by layers of sediment. Thus their further decomposition was halted. As the trees piled deeper and deeper into the swamp the petrification process began. Mud, sand and volcanic ash settled above the trees that gradually absorbed minerals from the surrounding moisture. Thus, hundreds of fossilised trunks developed that today are scattered across the prairie. Today, the Petrified Forest's formerly tall conifers are the most common examples of this stone world of plants that dates back to prehistory. The numerous colours of the pure quartz and various other varieties of the "stone trees" are quite remarkable and in stark contrast to the bright blue of the mostly cloudless sky. Most impressive is the millions of years old geologic phenomenon of the stone forest in the southern region that is situated only two kilometres from the entrance to the national park. In the Long Logs area that is located close to Giant Logs, there are hundreds of thousands of fossilised specimens. There are around three hundred archaeological sites in the park that range from small discoveries that have uncovered items of clay, to the incredible Pueblo dwellings of the Anasazi Indians. The Petrified Forest National Park combines the majestic brilliance of its petrifaction with the rugged beauty of a colourful desert. It is, without doubt, a unique masterpiece of Nature.

NPM-DVD-127 - The Mesa Verde National Park is located sixty kilometres from the small town of Durango in the U.S. State of Colorado. Various spectacular vantage points are located along the park's winding road, such as that of Park Point which at 2,613 metres above sea level is the highest section of the park and makes the panoramic view across the extensive desert foothills of the Rocky Mountains seems almost endless. Unlike most national parks in North America, and despite the magnificent rock and stone formations of the region, the observation of Nature is not the main reason that most people visit the park as the Mesa Verde is where the origins of an advanced North American civilization are to be found. The oldest traces of this region's human habitation date back almost twelve thousand years when for several centuries the Native Indians lived on top of the high plateau. At that time, the Indians possessed no building skills thus the Anasazi Indians lived within large, natural caves. Created and inhabited by the Anasazi, the impressive cliff dwellings of Spruce Tree House were most likely established in the 12th century. Steep cliffs still show traces of climbing and the ancient paths of the Anasazi and ceremonial buildings such as the Sun Temple were most likely the result of amicable communication between the neighbouring villagers of the canyons. Square Tower House at Navajo Canyon was probably built between 1200 and 1300 A.D. during the latter period of the Anasazi civilisation. The highest vantage point of this settlement is situated close to the main road. With a total of eighty rooms and seven ceremonial areas known as Kivas, this is one of the region's most remarkable cliff dwellings. Although the Anasazi civilisation that once lived among the canyons of Colorado were forgotten for many years they now enchant and fascinate people from around the world. Compared to other national parks in North America, the Mesa Verde unites the beauty of Nature with the unique remnants of a remarkable period of human history.

npm-dvd-136 - There are few places in the USA that, like the Canyon De Chelly, are both a national monument of Indian culture and at the same time contain a magnificent rocky landscape that attracts the serious as well as the most casual lover of Nature. The nature reservation's rocky terrain is formed by two long arms of land that consist of the southern Canyon De Chelly and the northern Canyon Del Muerto. This rocky landscape is located in the northeast of Arizona and in the middle of Dinétah´s heart, ancient Navajo Indian territory that today contains their reservation. Since the beginning of the 11th century, during the most important time of their culture, the Anasazi Indians built dwellings in numerous locations of the river valley. One of the most popular and historic rock settlements and archaeological areas of the Canyon is the White House, thus named due to its stark, bright appearance. These buildings are remarkable architectural examples that date back to the historical epoch of the Pueblo Tribe, between the 12th and 14th centuries. An array of smooth, eroded sandstone walls decorate each of the reservation's valleys. However, although less frequent, more spectacular are the free standing rocky peaks such as Spider Rock. Such impressive moments reveal the magnificent beauty of the Canyon De Chelly, the sacred territory of the Navajo Indians and in the bright, burning glow of sunset, both sky and earth become as one.

NPM-DVD-108 - Nature Parks BOG OF ZAPATA CubaThe Cienaga De Zapata Nature Park is situated in one of Cuba's most humid regions, the Zapata Peninsula. The simple huts of the Indian village of Guama give a basic impression of the life of the country's original inhabitants which like silent witnesses of the past rise out of a steaming swamp in the light of the breaking dawn. The rising sun paints the landscape in warm hues of colour and the flight of a bird is a reminder that under the cover of apparent stillness, there is a constant pulse of life. In this natural bio-space exist biological remnants which stem from the time of Earth's infancy. A lonely fishing boat moves quietly through the morning haze, past wooden bridges and dwellings, accompanied only by the splashing of water and the eternal melody of the wild and exuberant plant and animal kingdoms. The most varied life forms coexist harmoniously in this natural paradise, the splendour of the plant world contrasting starkly with bizarre forms of decay and the transformation of life and death which is bound up in nature. Slowly and dominantly, the crocodile-shaped head of the primeval Manjuari, a fish thought to have been extinct until some years ago, forces itself through the dense surface of the water only to quickly disappear into near-impenetrable vegetation. In the king palm covered Cochinos, the so-called Bay of Pigs, on the Playa Longa, only a few remnants remain of the failed landing of exiled Cubans in 1961. This peaceful paradise of grazing horses and white heron makes it easy to forget that this infamous event brought the world to the brink of annihilation. The Cienaga De Zapata is a universe of nature's treasures, a last refuge of Earth's history which stamps itself forever into the memory.

Full of character and charm, the diverse architecture and artistic decoration of many of its houses are reminders of a wealthy and glorious past. For several centuries the beautiful Piazza Del Mercato has been the town's market place. Originally a Roman Amphitheatre, during the Middle Ages its foundation walls formed part of the dwellings of the bourgeoisie. Lucca's city wall is 12 metres high and the most famous in Tuscany. For its four-kilometre length, approximately six million bricks were used. Lucca is a fascinating treasure trove of the life and culture of Tuscany. GTR-DVD-1034 - Archaeologists attach great importance to the ancient ruined city of Kerkouane. It is the only Punic city that has retained its original form and has not been altered or rebuilt by subsequent cultures. To the present, archaeologists have uncovered a long, horseshoe-shaped area of approximately 500m revealing an outline of alleys and streets.Unlike Roman design, each house had its own private sanitation system, which was connected to an extensive canalisation network. The majority of the floors were decorated with mosaics and most of the dwellings also had their own small well. The buildings were constructed in various ways using many different techniques and baked bricks, as well as clay, were among the main building materials. Some of the ruins contain floor mosaics that are still in very good condition and the tiny marble stones of the mosaics were sometimes used in special designs such as the so-called 'Tanit Symbol' that is a recurrent motif in the entrances to the dwellings and gravesites outside the town. GTR-DVD-1096 - Hallstatt is located on the shores of a sleepy Austrian lake, surrounded by high hills and the Dachstein Mountain Range. Similar to a fjord, Hallstatt Lake extends in front of the picturesque village that was one of the earliest and most unique settlements in this region. Due to the early discovery of large salt deposits in the surrounding mountains, the village has a proud history that dates back a thousand years and archaeology has revealed that this area was inhabited from around five thousand years B.C. Long before Christianity came to Salzkammergut and prior to any churches being built, an independent prehistoric culture evolved. The village contains a rich variety of historic buildings and its churches contain precious works of art such as a Late Gothic altar created by Leonhard Astl. The old marketplace and fountain is crowned by a trinity column that dates back to 1744. The welcoming facades of the dwellings have graced this atmospheric village since the 16th century and the market probably dates back to the 14th century. In 1891 Lake Street played a vital role for the village's busy commercial traffic and the impressive Countryside and Pre-History Museum displays the history of salt mining in the area and its importance to the village. In 1846 the Salinen civil servant, Johann Georg Ramsauer, made a sensational discovery when he discovered a prehistoric burial ground in the village. During seventeen years of excavation a total of twenty thousand objects were discovered in nine hundred and eighty graves. These discoveries subsequently led to the establishment of Hallstatt's intriguing and fascinating culture.
