VPG-DVD-112 - MONTREAL Canada's second largest city, Montreal is a fascinating blend of European charm and the American way of life. In Vieux-Montreal, narrow lanes and small houses recall the past and also the lifestyle of the original settlers. In the old fire station at Place D`Youville - one of the oldest markets in Montreal -- is the Centre D`Histoire in which the 350 year cultural history of the city is on display, from the development of the Irokese Settlement, its prolific fur trade, and right up to today's shining, energetic Metropolis. VPG-DVD-157 - YUNNAN Kunming is located in the Chinese province of Yunnan in south west China. The Buddhist temple of Ykan Ton Si dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The design of the city's largest temple complex was influenced by many diverse ethnic groups. The highlight of the complex is a lake in the middle of which a number of bridges lead to an octagonal pavilion. The Temple Of Total Penetration (yes, that's it's name!) is a tranquil and peaceful haven amid the busy alleys of Kunming's old town. In the west of Yunnan Province there are magnificent views from Xi Shan Mountain across Dian Lake and nestling among the rocks there are numerous temples that were once the scene of ritual sacrifice. On the downward journey the temples loom larger and larger while earthenware images of Buddha depict various stages of life. Yunnan's most famous site is the unique Stone Forest of Shi Lin. Its limestone rock originated from a long since dried--up ocean when the elements set to work on creating its fantastic and bizarre forms. The most amazing formations were given dramatic names such as The Sea Of Fire, Dragon's Tooth and Heavenly Sword. Pagodas, columns and strange flowers appear to rise from the rock and to facilitate access, tunnels and paths have been cut into the rock face. The Venice Of The Far East is the nickname of the ancient Chinese city of Lijiang in the northwest of Yunnan Province. The picturesque centre of the old town of Dayan is an architectural gem. Three rivers and several small creeks flow through the historic cit and there are various splendid stone bridges date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Buy Shan is a typical village of the region. Just as it was hundreds of years ago with farmers slowly leading their ox wagons through the village. The houses were built over a period of more than two hundred year between the Ming and Qing Dynasties in 14 and 16 A.D. Yunnan Province - place of simplicity, exquisite culture and spectacular natural wonders!

VPG-DVD-173 - VANCOUVER Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada and one of the most beautiful on the American continent, a dynamic metropolis set in a beautiful location with a temperate climate throughout the year. Close to the harbour area the city's skyscrapers have proliferated in recent years. The capital of the southwestern province of British Columbia has developed into an economic centre of renown. The city's oldest buildings were built less than a hundred years ago because the former wooden houses of old Vancouver were destroyed by fire. Several buildings reflect the origin of their inhabitants and are similar to those in the United States and Europe. Inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, an elegant structure of pink stone and glass, Canada Place, is located in the busy centre of the new harbour district and is also the city's most recent landmark. Close by is Harbour Centre, a modern skyscraper complex with a shopping centre and a Skylift to the top floor. A glass elevator transports visitors to a one hundred and sixty seven-metre high observation platform where the view across the city, harbour and bay is overwhelming. The exciting Skytrain is the city's most popular means of transport, an ultra-modern train built on posts that zig zags its way through the city. Each of the city's most important destinations are easily accessible and it has reduced the city's traffic problems considerably. For the World Exhibition of 1986, on the edge of Chinatown gardeners and craftsmen from Suzhou in China established Canada's first classical Chinese garden, the Doctor Sun Yat Sen Garden. Its ponds, bridges and small pavilions are similar to those in China, masterpieces of Far Eastern garden design. Everything in Vancouver is youthful, attractive and dynamic, a place in which Canadian politeness unites with the Pacific way of life!

VPG-DVD-205 - REYKJAVIK Reykjavik is Iceland`s gateway to the world and is one of the smallest metropolises on Earth. Just over a hundred thousand people live in this the northernmost of all cities that is sometimes referred to as Iceland's 'Smokey Bay'. The Hallgrims Kirkja is one of Reykjavik's main landmarks, a Neo Gothic church that was built between 1945 and 1986. It was named after a famous religious minister and poet of the 17th century, Hallgímur Pétursson. Both its design and large dimensions are impressive. Tjörnin is located in the centre of the city, a wonderful small lake surrounded by spacious parks and the new City Hall is also located there. Krists Kirkja is the city's main Catholic church and in 1989 the Pope preached within its walls marking the first visit of the Pontificate to Iceland. Narrow elegant bridges span across the splendid ponds of the Botanical Garden, a popular destination for the inhabitants of Reykjavik. However, small forests of conifers are the only real sign of nature on this remote and barren island. Chimneys are a rarity in Reykjavik. The majority of its houses are heated by geothermic water. Indeed, many of its pavements and streets are heated, a convenient asset that saves much money on snow clearance and makes life a lot easier for the local population. In Iceland the summer months are bright but in spring and autumn there are long periods when there is little daylight. July is the time of the famous midnight sun and thanks to the Gulf Stream the island enjoys a relatively temperate climate with cool summers and quite mild winters. Historic sights, hi-tech buildings and the charm of a small town. All this is Reykjavik, a remote metropolis built on fire and ice!

VPG-DVD-179 - LONDON London is an exciting and pulsating metropolis of the new millennium, a melting pot of both people and culture and a fascinating city of diverse contrasts. The City Of London contains the Tower, an historic landmark with a remarkable history. A mighty mediaeval fortress with thirteen towers that throughout its nine hundred years has served many functions and from the Middle Ages was a heavily fortified prison. After the medieval St. Paul`s Cathedral was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1666, Christopher Wren was ordered to re-build it with a dome. During the thirty-six years of its construction its design was frequently altered until finally a wonderful masterpiece of church architecture was created. The Monument is the city's tallest freestanding stone column and a reminder of the Great Fire Of London that destroyed four fifths of the city. In four days and nights more than thirteen thousand buildings were destroyed and the Monument was built on the site of the bakery in which the fire began. Since the reign of Queen Victoria, Buckingham Palace has served as London's royal residence. A garden of mulberry trees once grew on the site of today's palace and the Duke Of Buckingham subsequently added a simple brick built residence. Around sixty years later George II purchased the site for his wife and George IV eventually began to design an extensive palace complex. The highlight of any holiday in London must be the largest Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye. Situated on the banks of the Thames it rises high into the sky opposite the Houses Of Parliament and Big Ben. The former centre of the largest empire in the world, London is still a city of superlatives that attracts millions of visitors each year. VPG-DVD-154 - JALISCO Jalisco is a Mexican Federal State that has two special attributes, its folklore and a drink that's known all over the world, tequila! With 1.7 million inhabitants Guadalajara is Mexico's second largest city. The Plaza De Amras contains some fine decorative ironwork and a circular stage for music events. The city is home to Mexican rodeos and also the broad-brimmed sombrero. It is also believed to be the birthplace of the world famous mariachi music. After breaking with Spain, Guadalajara became the capital of Jalisco. At the beginning of the 20th century it was the second largest city of the new Republic. The city successfully unites its centuries old history with modern times and today is considered to be a perfect example of both modern and traditional Mexico. The Lago De Chapala is Mexico's largest lake and its three thousand kilometre shoreline is extremely beautiful and boasts several large sandy beaches. Located some sixty kilometres from Guadalajara it is also a natural paradise for a variety of waterfowl. Music can heard throughout Mexico and since the 19th century the country's mariachi bands have performed at festivals, wedding ceremonies and indeed almost anywhere that involves fun and celebration. For four hundred years the people in this 'Land Of Tequila' have existed from the juice of the Blue Agaves. In the past tequila was considered to be nothing more than cheap fire-water but today it has become a popular drink throughout the world. Jalisco is a country bursting with tradition, beauty and, of course, tequila!

Reykjavik is set amid a fascinating landscape, a metropolis on the outermost edge of civilisation and the world's northernmost capital city. A little outside the city is an attraction that is a meeting place for one and all, The Blue Lagoon, the largest bath tub in the world! The mineral water it contains has a temperature of forty degrees centigrade and the milky-blue pool has been proven to possess beneficial healing qualities. Southeast of The Blue Lagoon is Hveragerdi that is set within an idyllic valley. Due to its protected location and numerous thermal springs, in 1929 a garden city originated there and within its many greenhouses grow vegetables, fruit and exotic flowers. The small coastal picturesque village of Vik with its few houses and around three hundred inhabitants is located in a valley close to a bay. The mystical looking rocks seem to protect this place that has the most rainfall in what is an already rainy region and above which the rain clouds are often alive with both thunder and lightning. Iceland is a fascinating world of water, fire and ice and full of breathtaking beauty and overwhelming contrast. It is one of the last natural paradises on Earth.

VPG-DVD-131 - FIRENZE Florence is the capital of Tuscany, a city of art and joie de vivre. With its magnificent tower the Palazzo Vecchio is a communal palace that has been the city's political centre since the beginning of the 14th century. Originally it was the seat of the city's Republican rulers but soon afterwards the MEDICI dynasty settled there, the cleverest and most powerful of the handful of families that ruled over the city. In front of the palace's façade there is a double life-sized statue that is a copy of Michelangelo's‚'David', and in the Galleria Dell` Accademia there are several further sculptures by the great artist that idealised and glorified the strength of the Renaissance people. The three-sided Gothic cathedral and the Campanile are tightly packed into the city centre's Cathedral Square and the Santa Maria Del Fiore Cathedral is a replica of St. Peters in Rome and the Cathedral of Milan. The bronze 'Tower To Paradise' adorns the city's most sacred building, the Battistero, its mighty inner-dome, in Byzantine style, being supported by strong Roman columns while, in a gigantic mosaic, Christ the 'Judge of the World' features alongside angels and battles with the devil. San Lorenzo was the Medici's cathedral and one of the earliest creations of the Florentine Renaissance. To make way for it, an entire section of the city was torn down, a process that cost the Medici a large sum of money. Close to the Holy Antonius Cloister there is now a monastery and a museum and everywhere there are striking frescos by the artist Monk, Fra Angelico, several of which are on view in the monastery and its surrounding buildings. It could be said that the world obtained its taste for culture from Florence, a city in which art and culture unite in beautiful completion.

VPG-DVD-193 - BRETAGNE Brittany in the rugged west of France features picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses plus austere medieval cathedrals. Nostalgia and romantic harbour villages still exist here and it is also a land of menhirs and fishermen. Rennes is the capital of the region and it is here that our journey through Brittany begins. It is a small town in which both medieval and classical buildings stand side by side. In 1720 a disastrous fire that raged for seven days destroyed a number of historic houses. Several crooked, partly renovated frame-work houses are situated in the alleys of the old town, their carved windows and oriels create a medieval atmosphere. Thirty two kilometres south is Vitré, a picture postcard town with a city wall, narrow lanes and a castle. English troops besieged the town for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a large ransom for their freedom. Le Mont Saint Michel with its historic buildings is located on an eighty metre high granite mound and is like something from a fairytale. Powerful fortifications surround the small town and the abbey at the top of the rock. Due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident. Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance is one of the most beautiful and well preserved mediaeval towns in Brittany. The western part of France has many faces and Brittany truly is a land of myths, castles, fishing villages and historic old towns.

VPG-DVD-223 - AMMAN Amman is an historic metropolis in which ancient times and modern life meet face to face and where poverty and wealth live side by side. At first sight the city's ancient roots are not obvious, however, they date back to Biblical times. Abdoun is one of the city's modern city districts. For many years the city's former suburbs have been integrated into the megalopolis thus they now cover several additional hills. The slopes are crowded with modern, bright terraced houses and villas constructed of limestone and a modern infrastructure connects the residential districts with the old town at the foot of the hills. The King Abdullah Mosque is the largest and, due to its striking blue cupola, the most beautiful mosque in Amman. Although only completed in 1988 it is an important symbol of Islam. In 1900 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of the Hedjaz Railroad that was designed to unite the Ottoman Empire that had begun to disintegrate as well as to transport Moslem pilgrims to Medina in the Hedjaz Mountains. The monarchs who ruled over this land have been many and both earthquakes and fire have devastated its buildings. But Amman has managed to survive and now continues to be a prosperous and vibrant metropolis.

RIH-DVD-TIBET - Tibet AdventuresOur first stop in Tibetwas Lhasa an altitude of over 12,000 feet. While in Lhasa, the heart and soul of Tibet we visited many of the sacred places for the Tibetans such as the Potala Palace, the Jokhang, the Drepung Monastery, and Norbulinka. We then journeyed to Gyantse over the Karo La Pass at 16,550 feet and later visited with some villagers. In Gyantse we toured the Kumbum with its many murals.In Shigatse, we saw the Llama dances by monks that ended with the purging of evil spirits from the monastery by a ritual fire. A boat ride took us to the Samye Monastery where we met the chanting monk shown on the cover.
