VPG-DVD-117 - MARRAKESH Marrakesh, the 'red pearl' of Morocco was founded by Youssef Ben Tachfin in 1602. It is one of the country's four Royal Cities. Up to the beginning of the 20th century the city was a trading centre for both the north of Morocco and the Sahara and the monarchs of various dynasties made Marrakesh their capital city. The large souks of Marrakesh's Medina are divided into numerous sections and stock just about everything known to Man! In spite of the city's apparent calm there is much activity and the traffic is surprisingly well disciplined. Marrakesh has the largest souks in Morocco. As well as shoes and clothing they stock all the necessities of life and of course bargaining and haggling are the norm! Daily life in the souks is dominated by trade. They are a vital meeting place and trading centre for the farmers of the High Atlas. Those who wish to experience Moroccan daily life can do so here and a stroll through the narrow alleys taking in the city's sounds and aromas explains far more than any travel guide. Place Jemaa El-Fna is the 'Square Of The Beheaded' and is Marrakesh's most famous attraction with snake charmers, musicians and storytellers. In 2001 the Square Of The Beheaded was designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Built in 1158, the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosquee is the symbol of the city. The seventy seven metre tall sandstone minaret served as the model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat and most of it was built by Spanish prisoners of war. Marrakesh is an historic bridge that unites both urban and nomadic cultures - an exotic gateway to Africa and a captivating window to Europe!

VPG-DVD-157 - YUNNAN Kunming is located in the Chinese province of Yunnan in south west China. The Buddhist temple of Ykan Ton Si dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The design of the city's largest temple complex was influenced by many diverse ethnic groups. The highlight of the complex is a lake in the middle of which a number of bridges lead to an octagonal pavilion. The Temple Of Total Penetration (yes, that's it's name!) is a tranquil and peaceful haven amid the busy alleys of Kunming's old town. In the west of Yunnan Province there are magnificent views from Xi Shan Mountain across Dian Lake and nestling among the rocks there are numerous temples that were once the scene of ritual sacrifice. On the downward journey the temples loom larger and larger while earthenware images of Buddha depict various stages of life. Yunnan's most famous site is the unique Stone Forest of Shi Lin. Its limestone rock originated from a long since dried--up ocean when the elements set to work on creating its fantastic and bizarre forms. The most amazing formations were given dramatic names such as The Sea Of Fire, Dragon's Tooth and Heavenly Sword. Pagodas, columns and strange flowers appear to rise from the rock and to facilitate access, tunnels and paths have been cut into the rock face. The Venice Of The Far East is the nickname of the ancient Chinese city of Lijiang in the northwest of Yunnan Province. The picturesque centre of the old town of Dayan is an architectural gem. Three rivers and several small creeks flow through the historic cit and there are various splendid stone bridges date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Buy Shan is a typical village of the region. Just as it was hundreds of years ago with farmers slowly leading their ox wagons through the village. The houses were built over a period of more than two hundred year between the Ming and Qing Dynasties in 14 and 16 A.D. Yunnan Province - place of simplicity, exquisite culture and spectacular natural wonders!

It contains many ancient towns, monasteries and fortresses that highlight the region's history and its proud and hardy mountain people. Kitzbühel was once a prosperous mining town but today it is a world famous ski resort that is also popular in the summer months. The old town with its pretty middle class buildings that date back to the fifteenth century is a fine example of Austria's country's rural architecture. Around four thousand people live in the village of Wildschönau that is situated in a fascinating valley of the Kitzbüheler Alps that extend for some twenty four kilometres. Niederau is the entrance to the Wildschönau region and Oberau is the main village in a valley that features eye catching farm houses whose carved wooden balconies are decorated with splendid flowers. The Alpbach Tal leads into an untouched natural landscape where at an altitude of nine hundred and seventy five metres above sea level is the remote mountain village of Alpbach, the most beautiful village in the Tyrol. Kühtai is in the Stubaier Alps and can be reached from the Ötztal via the Sellraintal that travels at an altitude of around two thousand metres parallel to the Inntal. VPG-DVD-125 - JOHANNESBURG Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa's tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city's narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa's most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the city's past surface mining that gave rise to the country's massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as that of the history of Africa's native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. Gold Reef City is a large historical theme park that features the Johannesburg of pioneering times and focuses on the clothing, houses and entertainments of the country's golden years. On display are some of the old mining wagons that the workers used to transport the precious rock from the unforgiving mines and there's also a chance to see the liquid gold as it is turned into bullion and processed as gold coins. In contrast to Johannesburg, Pretoria grew at a calmer pace and has developed from a Boer farming municipality into South Africa's administrative capital. Located on a hill is the Vortrekker Monument that is a reminder of the Boers' Great Trek and, in 1830, the crucial battle in which they defeated the Zulus. Sun City is a magnificent fantasy world full of African ambience and the Sun City Hotel is the casino that made Sol Kerzner the richest man in South Africa, whereas the futuristic Cascades Hotel derived its name from its wonderful setting of waterfalls, pools and lush plant life. Johannesburg and this whole region of South Africa is THE sunshiny place to be!

VPG-DVD-207 - CARINTHIA Carinthia is Austria's southernmost region and borders both Italy and Slovenia. It is located in the sunny heart of Europe with more than a thousand lakes plus spectacular alpine regions and numerous Celtic Roman excavation sites, medieval castles, monasteries and cathedrals. In the eastern part of Carinthia and more than a thousand metres above sea level is one of the region's oldest historical villages, the mountain village of Diex. In the fifteenth century the Turks invaded the area with great savagery thus, as protection, local farmers built castellated churches in which they sought sanctuary. Friesach, Carinthia's oldest city, has retained what must be the true ambience of the Middle Ages, with a fortified princely estate and churches and monasteries that are surrounded by sturdy walls and a moat. The Maria Saal Open Air Museum is situated in the heart of Carinthia. In this richly cultural and historic area various traditional farm buildings from all over Carinthia have been reconstructed. Klagenfurt is the administrative centre of Carinthia: a middle class garden city that does not contain the fine buildings of the aristocracy but has a good helping of southern flair and, due to the nearby Wörthersee, is a marvellous summer resort. The Grossglockner High Alps road travels through one of the greatest natural landscapes in the world, the Hohe Tauern National Park, a remarkable mountain world in which nature is at its most glorious.

OTT-DVD-131 - The Dingle Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland is well known as one of the country's most scenic locations. It is also a region with a fascinating history and the origin of its villages and farms date back to Early Christian and even prehistoric times. The fifteen hundred inhabitants of tiny Dingle Town have for generations been closely associated with the sea. Although today's fishing industry is not what it once was, the fishing harbour still plays a vital role in the lives of the local people. Due to tourism the pubs of Dingle Town are kept well busy, however, compared with other parts of Ireland tourism here is a far more subdued affair. In Dingle Town in 1984 a dolphin appeared just off the coast and it accompanied the fishing boats into the harbour and indeed it still does and the Dingle Dolphin is now a well known attraction on this part of the coast. The Dunbeg Fort originated in the Bronze Age. Archaeology has shown that it dates back to the eighth century B.C. The magnificent location of the fortress hundreds of metres above the thundering sea and mighty cliffs make the visit to Dunbeg Fort a dramatic adventure. Close to Fahan is a large group of Beehive Huts, ancient circular buildings that date back to the Last Ice Age. According to archaeologists further buildings were erected in early Christian times. Its mysterious prehistoric and early Christian monuments as well as the beauty of its landscape have given the Dingle Peninsula the magic that has rightly made The Emerald Isle famous throughout the world!

OTT-DVD-103 - On Tour... STRADA DELLE DOLOMITI The Majesty Of The DolomitesSTRADA DELLE DOLOMITI The Strada Delle Dolomiti that stretches across 109 kilometre across the mountain landscape of the Southern Tyrol is a superb and dramatic experience in any season. Past centuries-old farmhouses, mountain peaks tease the sky majestically and whether it's mountain climbing or hiking, the Dolomites offer something for everyone and for motorcars, cyclists and motorbikes, the mountain roads pose a real challenge. Three pinnacles are considered to be the essence of the Dolomites, namely the Western, Large and Small Pinnacle. The view of the three pinnacles is magnificent as Nature manifests itself as the petrified air of high altitude, the fickleness of the wind and the blinding light of eternal snow. Cortina D´Ampezzo is Italy's main alpine resort and visitors from all over the world holiday in this splendid town the centre of which has a good deal of old world charm and where the facades of its chalets and hotels are covered with frescos painted by great artists. The stretch of land from the Schlüterhütte to the Grödner Joch has been described as "a pearl of a landscape". The route travels across small peaks and leads to a meadow of edelweiss and a mountain journey via cable car brings the steep mountain walls to within one's grasp. At the Giro d´Italia, the world's finest cyclists fight it out over several Dolomite passes. One of the laps crosses the highest point, the Pordoi Pass. For those who wish to spend some time here, there are several first class hotels, well-equipped Alpine chalets and comfortable guesthouses. The Dolomites have been granted the status of World Heritage Site by Unesco, a small section of Planet Earth that should be nurtured, quite rightly, as though it is a unique and rare work of natural art.

OTT-DVD-123 - The Shan State Express is the sonorous name of a unique train that travels to the north of Myanmar and to the legendary kingdom of the Shan. It passes through some of the most splendid scenery in South East Asia. We begin in the famous city of Mandalay that has a population of around a million and is a centre of Burmese art. Mandalay was founded around one hundred and fifty years ago and is therefore a relatively young metropolis. It owes its existence to an outstanding monarch, King Mindon who, wishing to escape from his kingdom's turbulent past, had a brand new royal city built. The journey on the Shan State Express begins early in the morning in Mandalay Train Station. Immediately after leaving the city we encounter wonderful scenery that is strongly influenced by a remarkable backdrop of mountains and unspoiled Nature. The railroad travels in a zigzag up the mountains which enables it to negotiate severe slopes that would otherwise be impossible for it to climb vertically. With the arrival of the railroad an increasing number of small farming villages developed most of which were populated by the Shan. Accounting for around eight point five per cent of the total population, the Shan are the largest ethnic minority in Myanmar. Their culture has been a major contribution to the historical development of South East Asia. At numerous railway stations Westerners are sometimes a little wary of the various snacks on offer. When a tempting skewer of food suddenly turns out to be a grilled locust the appetite can sometimes disappear within seconds! The continuing journey on the Shan State Express travels once more into the countryside. Picturesque hills line the route that is close to a famous militarily name, the Burma Road. The Shan State is truly one of the most colourful areas in South East Asia. Due to the extended train route from Mandalay to Lashio the time is hopefully not far away when the poverty of this region will be replaced by a new era of well deserved prosperity.

OTT-DVD-143 - Phnom Penh is the starting point for a special journey through Cambodia, an exotic land that is gradually transforming itself from a traditional way of life into modern times. The royal palace and the southern sanctuary of the Wat Preah Keo Morokat is one of the most important sights in Phnom Penh. The temple monastery was completed at the beginning of the nineteenth century and symbolises the religious section of the splendid palace complex that also features a reception area as well as the royal living quarters. It takes around five hours for the Royal Express Boat to travel from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and after around a hundred kilometres the boat reaches Tonle Sap Lake. The inhabitants of the Tonle Sap Lake area have adapted to the annual change in the water level -- when, amazingly, the river reverses it's flow - and consequently live in floating villages. For many centuries fishing has been vital to the local people and the lake contains more fish than any other in the world. Most of the inhabitants of the rural areas around Siem Reap have a very relaxed lifestyle. For tourists the local scenery is like a great natural paradise but for the region's farming families it mainly means hard work. The highlight of any journey across Cambodia is most certainly to be found within the historic monuments of the Angkor region, such as the Women's Citadel of Banteay Sre, an extraordinary temple complex. For the people of Cambodia the main temple of Angkor Wat is a unique national monument and an imposing sacred building that is to be found on Cambodia's bank notes as well as on its national flag. The boat cruise on the Royal Express is the perfect way to view Cambodia's scenery and to experience the age old traditions and lifestyle of a land that is slowly saying farewell to its tragic past while optimistically beckoning a bright new future.
