VPG-DVD-201 - MALTA Homer called Malta, 'The Centre Of The Sea'. This island situated in the heart of the Mediterranean and was important to both the orient and the occident. After the Phoenicians and the Punier came the Romans followed by the Arabs and the Normans: but it was the Knights Of Malta who made the most indelible mark here. Valletta is also known as The City Of Palaces and is Malta's main city, full of historic buildings, and in 1530 the Order of the Knights of Malta moved its main residence to this part of the island. The St. John´s Co-Cathedral was built in1577 by Gerolama Cassar as a monastic church of the Order Of The Knights Of Malta and its splendid interior was financed by the profits gained from hostilities mounted by the Order against Muslim trading ships. Mosta is situated in the middle of the island, a busy small town with a famous landmark, Mosta Cathedral, a huge sacred building whose mighty dome can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. The rugged southern coast of Malta contains small fjord-like features and numerous grottos, the most spectacular of which is the Blue Grotto. From the village of Wied-Iz-Zurrieq a steep path leads down to the sea and when the weather is suitable experienced guides take passengers on small boats through a narrow canyon into the grotto where the colour of the water is truly fascinating. One of the prettiest villages on Gozo is Gharb whose Baroque parish church dominates the main square. Here it is as though time really has stood still. With seven thousand years of history Malta is a colourful and beautiful island with tales of the sea and noble knights: a tantalising pearl set in the very heart of the Mediterranean.

OTT-DVD-137 - Situated in the extreme north of Europe the Lofoten have always been a special place. The picturesque beauty of this group of islands located just off the Norwegian coast has lost nothing of its age old fascination and colourful sense of history. With fourteen hundred inhabitants Stamsund is the main fishing village of the archipelago. Although the surrounding fishing grounds contain an abundance of fish the industry that once flourished here is not as prosperous as it once was. Now for much of the population tourism provides a lucrative alternative to the traditional fishing industry of bygone times and the five large main islands of the Lofoten have a perfect infrastructure and are connected with each other by way of various bridges and tunnels. The small village of Nusfjord is located in front of a captivating backdrop of mountains. Due to its unique location it looks more like a high mountain village than a fishing settlement. The village is both an historical as well as a cultural treasure and almost all of its buildings date back to the nineteenth century when its entire population worked in the fishing industry. At the end of the Lofot Highway at the southern point of Moskenesøy Island is the picturesque village of Å. The red of the houses adds interesting contrast to the surroundings as they are mainly dominated by grey rock. Tourists come to this village to visit two museums: the Stockfishmuseum and the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum. It became well known due to its unusual name and the inhabitants of Å are proud of the fact that their village has the shortest name in the world. The beautiful unspoiled landscape of these 'Islands Of The Gods' is full of captivating mystique and it no wonder that the Vikings also romanticised about their natural splendour.

OTT-DVD-134 - Amazing Voyage Along The Norwegian Coast - We begin one of the most beautiful sea journeys in the world in Bergen, an ancient seaport and trading town where we will be passengers on Norway's, 'Hurtigruten'. The Bryggen district was once founded by the German Hanse and is one of Bergen's most famous landmarks. The picturesque houses that once belonged to German traders make the charming historical district look more like an open air museum. The Ms Nordnorge is one of a new generation of ships that belong to the famous Hurtigruten Fleet and can take seven hundred passengers. At the mouth of the Nidelv in the Trondheimsfjord is the third largest city in Norway, Trondheim, an important trading and administrative centre. At the beginning of the thirteenth century Trondheim was a city of great influence and was also where the Norwegian kings of mediaeval times were crowned and although it gradually lost its political importance it still contains several fascinating buildings. From Trondheim the ship travels the century-old historic route north into Norway's most remote regions. Four and a half hours from Bodø and we arrive at the Lofoten, a fairy-tale group of islands in the North Atlantic. When the weather is fine we relax on deck, take in the fresh sea air and sunbathe while the ship glides through the water. A round trip through the historic town of Kirkenes marks the end of a wonderful journey through the fjords and coastal towns in the north of Norway.

GTR-DVD-1233 - The inhabitants of the Lofots situated in the High North of Europe have made their mark on these islands right up to the present day and have established various wonderful communities such as the picturesque village of Nusfjord, a fishing village that has retained all of its original charm. The village is equivalent to an open-air museum and has become one of the most famous tourist attractions of the Lofot Islands. For more than a thousand years cod has been the most important commodity for this northern archipelago and even the legendary Vikings appreciated the once fish-filled waters of the Lofots. Many villages still display long rows of fish that are hung out to dry in the salty sea air and are a tasty specialty of this region. Today there are a total of around two thousand fishermen on the Lofot Islands, men who continue to work in the thousand year old cod fishing of this remote region. Here, Nature dominates all and it is well worthwhile to follow the history of these island settlements and to explore picturesque fishing villages such as that of Nusfjord. GTR-DVD-1096 - Hallstatt is located on the shores of a sleepy Austrian lake, surrounded by high hills and the Dachstein Mountain Range. Similar to a fjord, Hallstatt Lake extends in front of the picturesque village that was one of the earliest and most unique settlements in this region. Due to the early discovery of large salt deposits in the surrounding mountains, the village has a proud history that dates back a thousand years and archaeology has revealed that this area was inhabited from around five thousand years B.C. Long before Christianity came to Salzkammergut and prior to any churches being built, an independent prehistoric culture evolved. The village contains a rich variety of historic buildings and its churches contain precious works of art such as a Late Gothic altar created by Leonhard Astl. The old marketplace and fountain is crowned by a trinity column that dates back to 1744. The welcoming facades of the dwellings have graced this atmospheric village since the 16th century and the market probably dates back to the 14th century. In 1891 Lake Street played a vital role for the village's busy commercial traffic and the impressive Countryside and Pre-History Museum displays the history of salt mining in the area and its importance to the village. In 1846 the Salinen civil servant, Johann Georg Ramsauer, made a sensational discovery when he discovered a prehistoric burial ground in the village. During seventeen years of excavation a total of twenty thousand objects were discovered in nine hundred and eighty graves. These discoveries subsequently led to the establishment of Hallstatt's intriguing and fascinating culture. 7DY-DVD-156 - Norway is a fascinating land in the extreme north of Europe where both magic and fairytales are very much alive. It has crystal clear lakes and rivers, snow covered mountains, idyllic fishing villages and endless beaches that are only accessible by boat. Although the Norwegian metropolis of Oslo is a modern city it continues to be inspired by the lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. Oslo is a harbour town that lies well sheltered at the end of a fjord and in the ninth century it was much appreciated by the Vikings who travelled throughout the known world, plundering much of it! Bergen's main tourist attraction is the Bryggen district that originated in the middle of the fourteenth century when it was heavily influenced by the North German Hanseatic Office. The city not only boasts a fascinating history but also a number of music festivals and it was the birthplace of world famous composer Edvard Grieg. Trondheim is Norway's historic capital in which the country's kings have been crowned. The Nidaros Domkirke is the most splendid Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. It was built on the bones of Holy Olav. For several centuries it has been a place of pilgrimage and since the Middle Ages the Norwegian kings were crowned and also entombed within its walls. The small village of Nusfjord is located in front of a captivating backdrop of mountains. Due to its unique location it looks more like a high mountain village than a fishing settlement. It is both an historical as well as a cultural treasure. It is easy to understand why the descendants of the Vikings are so proud of their fascinating home in the extreme north. Norway, a country bursting with breathtaking and untamed beauty!
