VPG-DVD-222 - HAMBURG Hamburg is a lively metropolis in the north of Germany and contains several green spaces, canals and lakes and provides a good standard of living for its inhabitants. Although known as a harbour city, Hamburg is located on the Elbe and is more than a hundred kilometres from the North Sea. Due to its huge river the sheltered harbour is accessible to large containerships. The Speicherstadt is part of the harbour and is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is crossed by canals that are known as fleets. It was once what amounted to a city of warehouses whose Gothic brick architecture with gables, pinnacles and arches created an extraordinary setting. The tower of St. Michaelis Church is lovingly known as 'Michel' and is one of the city's most famous landmarks and it is also one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the north of Germany, its white, grey and golden interior being particularly impressive. City Hall highlights the power of the autonomous Hansestadt Hamburg. This impressive building is supported by four thousand oak posts in the former swampland of the Alster. Hamburg is a green city on the water and gateway to the world: a European harbour that contains the spirit of distant lands!

OTT-DVD-113 - On Tour... DESERT EXPRESS NAMIBIA Making Tracks Through NamDESERT EXPRESS NAMIBIA Windhoek is the flourishing capital of Namibia and it is from here that we begin a journey through this country and experience some of the magic of the Dark Continent on a luxurious train - the Desert Express! Comfortable leather seats in the Starview compartment are the perfect way to enjoy the heavens and, as if by magic, Venetian blinds open and provide a view of the desert sky. Dating back to colonial times, the Christ Church is a reminder of the end of hostilities between the Germans and the indigenous population during the period when it was known as 'German West Africa', and indeed German influence in this part of the world is still very much in evidence today. A popular holiday resort on the mouth of the River Swakop and the final destination of the rail journey, Swakopumund, through whose harbour everything that was used in German West Africa was transported, resulting in a regular trading route between Swakopmund and Hamburg for more than ten years - a hint of Germany on the edge of the desert! In Swakopumund there are architectural treasures that were rented out in the days of the Kaiser and are reminiscent of various houses in Berlin. This is a part of Germany that no longer exists in Germany itself. Namibia is, quite rightly, a much sought after tourist destination. White deserts, wild animals, mountains strewn with ravines, and white beaches - Africa's south west is full of more than a few colourful surprises!

GTR-DVD-1231 - Approximately thirty kilometres southeast of the Finnish city of Oulu is an architectural gem, the Muhoksen Kirkko, the oldest timber built church in Finland that dates back to 1634. The canopy above the pulpit is decorated with a number of exceptional wooden sculptures. It is believed that these figures were manufactured in Germany and brought to the church during The Thirty Years' War. The pulpit was the work of Mikael Sigfridsson Balt a gifted Finnish carpenter and sculptor of the late seventeenth century. The pews of the rectangular church can accommodate a congregation of five hundred. The interior is dominated by a magnificent altarpiece created by Emanuel Granberg that dates back to 1778 and portrays a scene from the Old Testament, Moses And The Brass Serpent. Due to a great deal of loving care the Muhoksen Kirkko in the parish of Muhos is now a well preserved jewel of historic Finnish architecture. GTR-DVD-1132 - The Chorherrenstift Neustift in the Southern Tyrol has a long and proud history. Its origins date back to the 12th century. The ancient domicile of the Royal Court of Neustift and a former hospice known as Engelsburg are located close to this monastic settlement. In 1189 Propst Konrad The Second Of Rodank ordered the construction of a sanctuary for pilgrims, the sick and the poor. The Collegiate's library has a remarkable collection of books and its captivating internal décor indicates the prosperity of a bygone time. Provost Leopold The First Of Zanna ordered the costly construction of the splendid library hall designed by architect Giuseppe Sartori of Trentino. The interior of the impressive Collegiate Church dates back to the 18th century. The building's decor is typical Late Baroque and its transition to Southern Germany's Rococo period. In addition to the elaborate creations of the Wessobrunner artists the ceiling frescos of the Augsburg artist, Matthäus Günther, are particularly noteworthy. Beyond the Collegiate there are marvellous fruit plantations and vineyards and The Turkish Tower is a reminder of the region's historic past. As with the entire area of the monastery the unique treasures of the Chorherrenstift Neustift have been preserved for posterity.
