VPG-DVD-126 - STOCKHOLM Stockholm is a city that floats on water: the 'Venice Of The North' was built on fourteen islands. Gamla Stan, or 'Old Town', is the name of the city's three central islands that are linked by numerous bridges. Its ambience is that of the Middle Ages and small and mysterious alleys and beautiful buildings that date back to the 7th century characterise the life of the traders who once lived there. The old town's most dominant building is the royal castle of Kunglia Slottet. Larger than London's Buckingham Palace it contains six hundred and eight rooms. The Stadshuset is one of the city's landmarks and was designed in Medieval style and with a tower that is almost 106 metres tall. The most important artists of the time were engaged in the creation of the Blue Hall in which the Noble Prize ceremony now takes place each year. Those who appreciate museums will not be disappointed by Stockholm as it boasts more than fifty! The National Museum located on the Strömmen Canal contains countless works of art. Due to the passion for art of various of Sweden's royal family and also generous public donations, the museum has a truly outstanding collection of French paintings that date back to the 18th century. Six kilometres south of Stockholm is a cemetery that has been designated as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Skogskyrkogarden, the final resting place for many of Stockholm's past inhabitants and also some of its most famous, including Greta Garbo. This extraordinary complex took thirty years to build and is unique in the world. Since 1998 this centuries-old Hanse city has also been the cultural capital of Europe. This city of the Vikings is a true architectural gem!

VPG-DVD-222 - HAMBURG Hamburg is a lively metropolis in the north of Germany and contains several green spaces, canals and lakes and provides a good standard of living for its inhabitants. Although known as a harbour city, Hamburg is located on the Elbe and is more than a hundred kilometres from the North Sea. Due to its huge river the sheltered harbour is accessible to large containerships. The Speicherstadt is part of the harbour and is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is crossed by canals that are known as fleets. It was once what amounted to a city of warehouses whose Gothic brick architecture with gables, pinnacles and arches created an extraordinary setting. The tower of St. Michaelis Church is lovingly known as 'Michel' and is one of the city's most famous landmarks and it is also one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the north of Germany, its white, grey and golden interior being particularly impressive. City Hall highlights the power of the autonomous Hansestadt Hamburg. This impressive building is supported by four thousand oak posts in the former swampland of the Alster. Hamburg is a green city on the water and gateway to the world: a European harbour that contains the spirit of distant lands!

VPG-DVD-199 - KØBENHAVN Copenhagen is the capital of the Kingdom of Denmark and is situated on the east coast of Sæland Island on the Öresund, the link between the North Sea and the Baltic. It is a European capital of culture, home country of the Little Mermaid and a successful combination of Scandinavian elegance and Middle-European joie de vivre. In 1167 Bishop Absalon Of Roskilde was granted by King Valdemar an area of land on Öresund to which the small settlement of Havn also belonged. For the protection of both fishermen and traders he built a fortress and the settlement developed into Kobmandshavn, the Harbour Of The Traders. Copenhagen was born and the fortress was continuously enlarged until in 1376 a castle was built on its foundation. The huge Christiansborg Slot extends across the larger part of Slotsholmen, Castle Island and it has been Denmark's power base for hundreds of years. The huge statue in the square features King Frederik The 7th on horseback, a monarch known in Danish history as the 'King Of Democracy'. Each day crowds of people make for Copenhagen's world famous landmark, The Little Mermaid, created by artist Edward Eriksen. Tiny and elegant and seated on a stone she gazes yearningly across the sea oblivious to the city's hustle and bustle. The Rundetårn is an unusual building that was built at the command of the Renaissance king, Christian The Fourth. Its circular tower is thirty-six metres high and has a diameter of fifteen metres. In place of a conventional stairway royal architects Hans and Morten Van Steenwinkel constructed a winding two hundred and nine metre long ramp. Thus the somewhat rotund king was able to travel without difficulty by carriage to the astrological observatory at the top! Copenhagen is a friendly metropolis in which tolerance and openness are the order of the day, a 'City On The Sea' that fascinates all who experience it.

OTT-DVD-118 - On Tour... SHEKHAWATI Caravan Trail In RajasthanSHEKAWATI Shekawati, the North Indian region of Rajasthan, was once an important trading route to China. The amazing wealth of the majarajas can still be experienced as their former palaces have now been transformed into luxury hotels. The journey through this exotic land begins in Sikar, a place that still brings to mind the splendour of bygone times. The streets and lanes of this small town are always busy and it is as though half the population is making its way through the town. Lorries and camel wagons dominate the streets and the unpredictable nature of Indian traffic is a constant challenge. Havelis, the exquisite homes of the city's former traders, are architectural gems. The dwelling houses of Sikar's wealthy traders have retained their former glory and are built of yellow sandstone. The word 'havelis' is derived from the Persian language and means 'encircled square'. The walls protect the building from the searing heat and also uninvited guests. In the 18th century Churu was one of the most important stops along the caravan route. The mighty Poddar Family dominated the supply of provisions to the travelling traders. Due to punitive taxes they moved their business to Ramgarh thus Churu gradually fell into decay but with the arrival of the British the town prospered once again. Each city in the Shekawati region is like something from a movie set and it would not be at all surprising if a film crew suddenly appeared from behind one of the magnificent facades! The splendour of the region's havelis and royal palaces has turned this journey into an unforgettable adventure. Shekawati is truly a golden step into a lost age.

TVI-PDVD-COP - Kobenhavn (Copenhagen) The City for Everyone (PAL)Copenhagen, Denmark's capital, was declared European Culture Capital in 1996. And it is far from being reserved or sober. On the contrary, it is festive and full of joy of life, especially after dusk. Kobenhaven, originally Kobmaendenes Havn, means "The Port of the Traders". And the city does not bear this name by chance. The romantic part of the city is concentrated mainly in Nyhaven, the so-called new port and this is further amplified by the fact that the location is closely linked with the name of Hans Christian Andersen, the author of the world's most popular fairytales. The bronze statue of the unfortunate Little Mermaid has today become the symbol of Copenhagen. In our film we will visit the architectural monuments from the time of the best known Danish ruler, Christian IV, dubbed the Builder. The Tivoli entertainment park inspired Walt Disney to build Disneyland. It has been a Copenhagen attraction for 150 years, along with its extensive wax museum. Copenhagen a modern city with more than 1.5 million inhabitants, one of the most beautiful and tolerant cities, is looking forward to your visit.

GTR-DVD-1048 - The Stephansdom in Vienna is one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. The oldest sections of its façade, the Heidentürme and Riesentor, are of Romanic origin. They date back to 1260 A.D. during the reign of King Ottokar The Second of Bohemia. But it was left to a member of the Habsburg royal family to complete the construction of the cathedral. The dark and mysterious catacombs located beneath the cathedral contain the remains of many former Habsburg sovereigns and up until 1783 the underground passages were also used for the burial of Viennese commoners. The significance of the building was not only due to its magnificent works of art but from 1469 it played an increasingly important role and thus became a Bishop and Cathedral Church. By creating its outstanding pulpit, cathedral master builder Anton Pilgram made himself immortal as a 'Fenstergucker'. During the Baroque period the building was severely neglected. However, the beginning of the 19th century saw the renewal and strengthening of the cathedral. Having survived all the tumult of past centuries, this unique building with its proud, tall towers that rise above Vienna, has truly withstood the test of time. GTR-DVD-1236 - The history of the ancient and charming harbour town of Bergen, Norway's 'secret' capital city, began in the eleventh century during the rule of Bishop Olav Kyrre. One of the city's most important twentieth century buildings is the Train Station that was inaugurated in 1907. The Stasjon is a captivating reminder of times gone by and its trains travel along one of the most picturesque railway routes in Europe. Bergen's main tourist attraction is the Bryggen district that originated in the middle of the fourteenth century when it was heavily influenced by the North German Hanseatic Office. German traders were attracted by the prosperous city and so had a permanent administrative HQ built. The city not only boasts a fascinating history but also a number of music festivals and world famous composer Edvard Grieg originated from Bergen. Indeed, each year the city holds a music festival in his honour with various concerts, ballets and theatrical performances. The inhabitants of Norway's 'secret' capital city continue to care for and respect their historic cultural inheritance right up to the present day.
