VPG-DVD-211 - GRAZ Graz is the capital of Austria's federal state of Styria and in 2003 was designated as Europe's Capital City Of Culture. Indeed, due to its geographical location, for many centuries Graz has been a melting pot of culture. The Schlossberg Mountain towers above the city and in 1894 a rack railway was introduced in order to overcome the severity of its 60 per cent gradient. The Romans and Celts once used the mountain as a place of ritual ceremony and today small pathways and pavilions make the mountain more accessible. In the 12th century a medieval castle was built on the plateau and in 1531 it was transformed into a mighty fortress that served as a defense against the Turks. With nearly 32,000 exhibits that date from the 15th to the 19th centuries the Zeughaus contains the largest collection of historic weaponry in the world. The often-extended Grazer Burg was once the residence of the Hapsburgs. One of its towers contains a unique double spiral Gothic staircase constructed of sandstone that shines out magnificently in a wonderful array of colour. The entire complex, along with each of its numerous building styles and adjoining park, is now the seat of Styria's provincial government. Located on a hill to the north east there is another fine example of Baroque architecture, the Maria Trost Basilica. In the 17th century those who sought help and consolation climbed two hundred and fifteen steps to a Gothic Madonna who was thought to possess miraculous powers. Within the interior of the church and its colourful wall and ceiling mounted frescos, there are also various scenes of battle. Graz is a city in which the artistic and architectural styles of the German-speaking nations, the Balkans and the Mediterranean are united. It is a remarkable city of age old traditions, mediaeval flair and contemporary life.

GTR-DVD-1031 - The charming older part of Madrid is dominated by numerous monumental and magnificent buildings including, most notably, the wonderful Palacio Real. A harmonious and elegantly designed facade opens onto the Plaza De Oriente. This was formerly the location of numerous buildings: originally, the Moors built an Alcazar here; in the course of time, it was transformed into the main palace of the Hapsburg royal family that once reigned over the country. The magnificent halls of the palace are breathtaking. The hall in the Comedor De Gala contains the most beautiful, grandiose chandeliers and precious paintings by the Bohemian, Anton Raphael Mengs and ceiling frescos by Gianbattista Tiepolo decorate several of the rooms. Even though the royal family no longer resides in the palace, it is still a much-prized historic jewel in the Spanish crown. GTR-DVD-1052 - Glurns Glorenza is a small town in the Southern Tyrol. A written account of the town was first made in the 12th century, however, it only received its status as a Meinhardinic town in 1294. Today, the picturesque town has seven hundred inhabitants and even now enjoys certain privileges once granted to it by a royal prince. Shortly after the founding of the town around the end of the 13th century began the flowering period of the Tyrolean trading routes and commercial centres of the Middle Ages. In 1499 the outbreak of the Engadiner War shook Glurns. During the Battle of Calven on May 22nd., events took a turn for the worse. Constant hostilities between the Hapsburg and Swiss Confederation finally led to a great battle and the defeat of the royal troupes. The hostile farmers´ army took the Hapsburg army by surprise, thus a massacre took place within the defenceless town. Approximately six thousand people were killed and a week later King Maximillian saw for himself the full extent of the catastrophic massacre. Throughout the centuries an impressive part of the Tyrol's moving history has been well preserved beyond the unique walls, towers and gates of Glurns Glorenza.
