VPG-DVD-162 - MEXICO CITY Mexico City is a vivid metropolis and cosmopolitan city situated on a plateau in the central highlands at an altitude of 2, 286 metres - where the food is spicy and the Tequila flows freely! The city's fascinating history is reflected in both its art and architecture with age old charm, Indian roots and elegant buildings. Until the Spanish conquest the Templo Mayor was the setting of coronations and human sacrifice. The remains of the walls within which thousands of priests once lived are only a few steps from the buildings of the country's former Spanish conquerors. Construction of the country's largest cathedral, the Catedral Metropolitana, took two hundred and fifty years. The lower section is quite plain but the upper section is of Baroque and Neo-Classical design. Spanish administrative buildings and private houses in the heart of the city have replaced the temples of ancient Mexico and has resulted in a synthesis of both old and new architectural styles. An elevator ascends the Torre Latino America, an earthquake-proof tower that was built in 1958. A viewing platform provides a wonderful panoramic view that includes the Palacio De Bellas Artes and the Juarez Monument. Located fifty kilometres from Mexico City are the ancient remains of Teotihuacan that was once a centre of trade, art and ritual ceremonies. At its zenith in 500 A.D. it was as large as Rome and its Sun Pyramid is one of the greatest building achievements of ancient times. In 1988 Unesco attributed this complex as being 'one of the most important cultural centres of Mankind'. The author Pablo Neruda once said: 'No other land on Earth possesses such remarkable human profoundness than Mexico and its inhabitants'. For surprises, sights and history galore, Mexico has to be at the top of the list!

RIH-DVD-PERU - Peruvian HighlandsWith Crooked Trails Tours, I visited two Peruvian Andean villages of Vicos and Humacchuco. We lived and worked with these villagers who have had little interaction with outsiders. They have maintained their traditional customs and their language, Quechua. We helped them dig up their potatoes and tubers for a community feast called Panchamama, or mother earth feast.

NPM-DVD-145 - Even for the African continent that is blessed with numerous beautiful natural landscapes, the Okavango Delta is truly unique. Covering a total area of more than fifteen thousand square kilometres the Okawango River is the largest inland delta in the world. It flows from the Bihé Highlands in Angola and travels down to the less elevated regions of the Kalahari Desert until it finally divides into a variety of creeks. The delta's relatively few visitors mean that the landscape is well protected and it also means that those who do come here can enjoy the scenery undisturbed. Rann's Camp has a first class range of facilities but such service comes at a price and it costs several hundred dollars per person per night, but to calm the shock one can enjoy a relaxing bathe in the camp's cool swimming pool. Wildlife abounds on the innumerable islands of the Okavango Delta that, with their lush vegetation, are a true paradise for many kinds of herbivore. Today the islands of the delta are not frequented by poachers because the terrain is far too difficult and inaccessible for them. Thus in these parts, the elephant, the largest mammal in Africa, is in no danger of being shot for its ivory tusks. Most of the Delta's giraffes live on the seventy-five kilometre long and twenty-five kilometre wide, Chief's Island. In addition to its lush vegetation and diverse natural habitats, the lagoons, swamps and forests of the Delta make it one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The Okavango Delta is one of the last great wildernesses in Africa and is something altogether special. The scenery is so beautiful that it often resembles a wonderful painting, than mere reality, a place in which myth and the captivating magic of Africa have survived right up to the present day.

GTR-DVD-1131 - Approximately 450 kilometres south of Peru's capital of Lima a desolate road leads into the vast terrain of the scant, desert-like highlands. In the midst of this almost lifeless world and surrounded by sandy mountains is the small airport of Nazca. Indeed, a single aircraft once made this region famous. One day while flying here in 1939, American Paul Kosok made an amazing discovery: long drawn-out lines that extend across the ground that are the traces of a mysterious pre-Columbian culture. These strange hundred metre lines were created by the Nazca culture and according to archaeological research date back to the sixth or seventh century B.C. Since their discovery they have created much controversy with regard to their origin, function and significance. There are more than a hundred lines and figures within the surrounding plains and mountains. Most of the markings were revealed by the removal of the top layer of dark stones from the ground. In recent years one of the images known as the Astronaut has captured the imagination more than any other. The proportions and geometric precision of the different images raise numerous questions. How could the Nazca people have created these gigantic designs? Recently a further image of perfect proportions and measuring a hundred metres was also discovered. But how were those who created these enormous images able to gain a true perspective of their work? Is it possible that a precursor of the hot-air balloon existed in those bygone times? Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.
