VPG-DVD-171 - BAHAMAS Nassau is the capital of the island of New Providence which is one of the many islands of the Bahaman archipelago that extends for almost a thousand kilometres between Cuba and Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. New Providence is the commercial and political centre and is more commonly known as the Bahamas. Built between 1805 and 1813 in typical American southern style, the pink-coloured buildings of Parliament Square are the headquarters of the Bahamian government. In front of the white columned Neo-Classical parliament building is a noble statue of the English queen, Victoria, as a young girl. The colourful Caribbean Straw Market is a lively place. There are lots of fascinating things to see including skilful craftsmen who carve traditional objects from mahogany. Bags, baskets and hats made of straw are offered as souvenirs. Along the coast there are several caves in which pirates once hid their ill-gotten gains or argued over buried treasure. During the Stone Age the Arawak Indians lived in the caves. Cable Beach boasts a multitude of exquisite modern hotel complexes that cater for every need and several of them possess a casino. Naturally, each has its own lavish bathing areas and a vast choice of exciting entertainment. Thus it's not too difficult to understand why British secret agent 007 often chose these islands for his investigations! The Bahamas: the very name conjures up remote sandy beaches and turquoise blue water, romantic sunsets and tropical nights. A place where fantastic dreams become wonderful reality.

I took a road trip this summer from PA to TX to visit Texas Christian University as a possible grad school choice... If you've never taken a road trip, I suggest you do it!!! AMAZING time!!! I made a stop at Field of Dreams in Iowa (my favorite movie) and it just happened to be the day that Kevin Costner came back to the field!!! He hadn't been back since leaving the shooting of the film in 1988!!!! I had just stopped by randomly and was a part of history.. Simply an amazing place and any FOD fan should go!!

OTT-DVD-135 - The famous train S1 leads through both Central and South Vietnam, one of the most fascinating countries in South East Asia. In the 19th century Da Nang quickly evolved to become the most important harbour and financial metropolis in Central Vietnam and thus replaced Hoi An as the country's main city. The year 1858 marked the beginning of fast approaching colonisation when French warships attacked Da Nang's bay and natural harbour. The Vietnam S1 train travels from the capital of Hanoi deep into the south of the country. Almost the entire section of the railway line between Da Nang and the southern city of Nha Trang is dominated by vast fields of rice and the scenery features several wonderful mountains and a landscape that is often so spectacular that it is quite overwhelming. Da Lat, the capital of the province of Lam Dong, is known as the City Of Eternal Spring and is a popular holiday resort. It also contains the summer residence of the last emperor of Vietnam. Surrounded by wonderful parks, the summer palace of Emperor Bao Dai is one of the city's most beautiful attractions and was heavily influenced by the French. Now it is surely only a question of time before the VIETNAM S1 Train and this fascinating region of VIETNAM become an integral part of the mainstream tourist map of South East Asia.

GTR-DVD-1152 - Today it is difficult to believe that three hundred years ago the tiny dreamy harbour of Hoi An was one of the most important seaports in Vietnam. Now only small fishing boats lie at anchor in the harbour yet in former times Hoi An experienced a flourishing trade with Europe. Whether on the riverbanks of the Thu Bon, the narrow streets or the fascinating shops, Hoi An has retained the colourful atmosphere of bygone times. Life continued here as normal until in the early 1990's the tourist industry began to develop in Vietnam. The city's new found prosperity has not yet reached the entire city but it is reflected in some of its buildings. Many of the city's meeting halls, temples and homes are of typical Chinese design. Both the Quan Am Temple and the Quang-Cong Temple date back to the 17th century. Toward the end of the 17th century an increasing number of Chinese merchants settled in the city and this gave rise to the construction of several splendid meeting halls. Business relationships were cultivated in these traditional communal buildings and new friendships made, information exchanged and ancestors and gods worshipped. Once again the town is beginning to prosper and the historic ambience of this intriguing city may well mark a new beginning to the inhabitants of Hoi An. Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.
