VPG-DVD-150 - MEKNES Meknes is one of Morocco's four royal cities and became famous due to its megalomaniac monarch, Sultan Moulay Ismail who is also known as Morocco's Sun King. The cruel and despotic sultan made Meknes the mightiest fortified city in North Africa. Moulay Ismail had an army of a hundred and fifty thousand men who were stationed at each of the country's main strategic points. Included in his royal household was a harem of six hundred wives of various races as well as countless children and a large retinue of African slaves. His former residence, the Heri and Dar El-Ma Complex, contained fifty palaces that were divided by way of gardens, barracks and stables in which there were twelve thousand horses. The Medina of Meknes is a World Heritage Site and contains both medieval and modern architecture. The old town consists of the Ville Imperiale, the ruins of the palace complex and also the Medina with it residential and commercial districts. It also includes the former Jews Ancien district and the Nouveau Mellah that is now known as Riad. The Medersa Bou-Inania is one of the most important buildings in the Medina. Its courtyard contains a shell-shaped well that is used for ritual bathing. The ground marble and alabaster stuccowork is decorated with objects made with fine spatulas. The Great Mosque was founded by the Almohads but was altered during the time of the Meridis and provides a close insight into the world of Islam. The Berber tribe of Meknassa first gave this city its name but following thousands of years of dramatic history the former royal city of Meknes remains an enigma to the present day.

VPG-DVD-160 - BHAKTAPUR Bhaktapur, also known as 'the city of the pious' is the third of the ancient royal cities in the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley in the Kingdom of Nepal and also a Unesco World Heritage Sight. On both sides of Durbar Square are many precious art treasures but the city is also fully-functional and a 'car free' open air museum! The medieval city derived from a fortress complex and was later transformed into a palace area. At the western end of Durbar Square is Dvarikanath Mandir, a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. Today a huge pair of lions flank the entrance to the National Art Gallery and there are images of Hanuman and Narasimha. Vatsala Devi Mandir is a temple with a square, three-tiered base. This sacred building has a corridor set around a central Shikhara tower and its stairway is flanked by elephants and two fantastic horses. The number of the city's small temples, shrines and dwellings of the gods is many and complex and they can be found at each crossroads and in every courtyard and doorway. Bhaktapur has also been immortalized in the movie, Little Buddha. For those interested in culture the Kingdom of Nepal is a dream destination and Bhaktapur is a truly atmospheric journey into a rich and golden past.

VPG-DVD-119 - ALTO ADIGE The Strada Delle Dolomiti is a good mountain road that travels through a picturesque nature reserve amidst some of the most beautiful mountains in Europe, an enchanting region in northern Italy, the Alto Adige. The age-old charm of the historical city centre of Cortina d´Ampezzo is captivating and the facades of its chalets and hotels are richly decorated with frescos. Alpe Di Siusi, the Seiser Alm, contains a fifty square kilometre recreation area. In summer, hikers come to this high plateau and in winter it's popular with cross-country sportsmen. Europe's largest alpine meadow is located at an altitude of two thousand metres above sea level and horse-drawn sleighs are at the ready for local excursions pulled by tough and hardy Haflinger horses. The region's metropolis is Bolzano-Bozen that is situated in a valley basin that opens up to the south. The symbol of the city is its Late Gothic Bishop Church and in the adjoining Baroque chapel there is a collection of priceless frescos. The stone images and grotesque symbols on its facade indicate the great influence of the basic doctrines of the Church. In the small alleys of the picturesque old town the houses have arcades that are known as Lauben. Luxurious middle-class houses with artistically painted facades adorn the alleys of the old town that was used by the Romans as a central resting place while travelling to the north. Brunico-Bruneck is the main village of Puster Valley. In 1250 Bishop Bruno of Brixen built this strongly fortified city and castle against the monarchs of the Tyrol. The rows of houses in the Stadtgasse date back to the 15th and 16th centuries and make it one of the most beautiful streets in the Tyrol. High on a rock at the entrance to the Valle Aurina-Ahrntal is Taufers Castle, one of the mightiest fortified buildings in the Tyrol. For history combined with fairytale scenery, the Alto Aldige is the place to be!

NPM-DVD-143 - The Rocky Mountains National Park is one of the most unique and impressive natural paradises in the United States Of America. It covers an area of a thousand square kilometres and was inaugurated in 1915. The picturesque Bear Lake lies within a forested area and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the park. At high altitude, several paths such as the Nature Trail lead through the lake's natural landscape. The idyllic beauty is truly spellbinding and it is not surprising that Bear Lake is the most popular photo shot of the entire park. It was discovered that twelve thousand years ago prehistoric Indians hunted within the Rocky Mountains. The legendary culture of the Nasazi Indians originated around two thousand years ago and left its traces in what is today the national park. Alberta Falls in the south of Glacier Gorge is one of the park's most popular sightseeing destinations where white masses of foaming water race down several levels into the valley below. The road from Glacier Gorge winds its way in a northerly direction past Glacier Basin and the eastern park entrance close to Estes Park. In this region the Rocky Mountains are at their most beautiful and the landscape in the area of Horseshoe Park is reminiscent of the exciting and colourful Wild West of old. The vast wilderness in the west of the USA has survived in the Rocky Mountains right up to the present day and is a fascinating tribute to the amazing natural world of North America.

NPM-DVD-123 - Nature Parks CAMARGUE Provence, FranceNowhere else are both countryside and waterscapes more attractive. In France, amongst the spacious tributaries of the Rhone is the romantic region of the Camargue. Once considered as hostile terrain, today this swampy area is becoming increasingly popular, which is not surprising with the large variety of impressive locations that this fascinating region has to offer and the region's traditional white horses that are famous throughout the world. Bright fields of sunflowers are everywhere yet the Camargue is more well known for its cultivation of rice. In the high season of the summer months, of which the inhabitants of the small town of Saintes-Maries-De-La-Mer numbers around a thousand, the population increases ten fold. The fortified exterior of the pilgrimage church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Mer that was built on the site of an early Christian chapel is a reminder of this region's dramatic past. Legend has it that its beach was the starting point for the subsequent spread of Christianity in Provence. In addition to its significance as a place of pilgrimage, life in the village centres around the Camargue bulls and it even contains a bullring! Just as with Provence the beauty of the Camargue has attracted numerous famous painters and artists who were inspired by the wild tranquillity of this area and the landscape itself is like a painting when suddenly a collection of water lilies can bring to mind a famous impressionistic painting by Monet. The region's outstandingly beautiful and harmonious combination of water, air and earth is unique in Europe. The French poet, Daudet, was absolutely right when he described the Camargue as the 'most beautiful swamp in the world!'

NPM-DVD-108 - Nature Parks BOG OF ZAPATA CubaThe Cienaga De Zapata Nature Park is situated in one of Cuba's most humid regions, the Zapata Peninsula. The simple huts of the Indian village of Guama give a basic impression of the life of the country's original inhabitants which like silent witnesses of the past rise out of a steaming swamp in the light of the breaking dawn. The rising sun paints the landscape in warm hues of colour and the flight of a bird is a reminder that under the cover of apparent stillness, there is a constant pulse of life. In this natural bio-space exist biological remnants which stem from the time of Earth's infancy. A lonely fishing boat moves quietly through the morning haze, past wooden bridges and dwellings, accompanied only by the splashing of water and the eternal melody of the wild and exuberant plant and animal kingdoms. The most varied life forms coexist harmoniously in this natural paradise, the splendour of the plant world contrasting starkly with bizarre forms of decay and the transformation of life and death which is bound up in nature. Slowly and dominantly, the crocodile-shaped head of the primeval Manjuari, a fish thought to have been extinct until some years ago, forces itself through the dense surface of the water only to quickly disappear into near-impenetrable vegetation. In the king palm covered Cochinos, the so-called Bay of Pigs, on the Playa Longa, only a few remnants remain of the failed landing of exiled Cubans in 1961. This peaceful paradise of grazing horses and white heron makes it easy to forget that this infamous event brought the world to the brink of annihilation. The Cienaga De Zapata is a universe of nature's treasures, a last refuge of Earth's history which stamps itself forever into the memory.

GTR-DVD-1057 - Versailles was the former palace and dream castle of the French 'Sun King', Louis the Fourteenth. The history of Versailles covers the rise and fall of the Bourbons whose reign covered the most remarkable period of French history. Here, the French king lavishly entertained the decadent nobility, oblivious to the unrest caused by their false pride, supreme arrogance and almost total disregard for the poverty of the French people that would eventually lead to Revolution.Magnificent fountains decorate the palace's huge park that was created by 35,000 workers, a hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths that seem to be without end. Drawn by four horses, the god Apollo emerges from the waters of a fountain. This and further fountains and ponds were designed by Tuby and Lenotre, and are masterpieces of both garden design and the sculptor`s art. Playful figures and statues adorn the park's many paths and even today emanate the joy and merriment of past days. Construction of the royal palace was completed some time after that of the gardens. The palace was to be the epitome of majestic splendour and was designed to accommodate the entire French Court: 20,000 people! Containing more than 700 lavish rooms, the palace is a unique architectural masterpiece. In the opulence of the private rooms there are grand four-poster beds and splendid canopies. Ceiling paintings, gold and marble intarsia, carvings, goblins and superb crystal chandeliers are an indication of some of the king's creative ideas that Lebrun realised in exemplary style. Versailles served as the model for several European palaces such as those in Potsdam, Vienna and St. Petersburg. However, it continues to be a unique monument of unashamed splendour and supreme opulence. GTR-DVD-1087 - The magnificent buildings within Mozart's famous city of Salzburg are not the only reason why it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Austria. The Prince Archbishop, Wolf Dietrich, ordered that Salzburg Cathedral be built according to Italian Early Baroque design. It was constructed between 1614 and 1628 on the site of a previous Romanic building. At one time the Getreidegasse served as the main road of the old city and on January 27th 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in house number seven.. 119 metres above the town is one of Middle Europe's most well preserved castles, Hohensalzburg, which covers an area of around 30,000 square metres. The centre of Kapitel Square is dominated by a Schwemme, a fountain that dates back to the 18th century where the city's horses were washed down. There are numerous impressive sacred buildings in the city such as the Baroque Kollegien Church designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer Von Erlach. A fascinating and remarkably attractive park surrounds the Lustschloss Hellbrunn that dates back to both the Manieristic and Early Baroque period. The interior of the palace is as beautiful as its external appearance. Illusionist architectural paintings were a popular device designed to alienate reality. Due to the exquisite taste of the royal archbishops of a glorious age, today Salzburg is one of the most beautiful Baroque cities in Europe. GTR-DVD-1111 - Mezquita Cathedral is one of the most important historical monuments in Cordoba, a beautiful city in southern Spain and former residence of the Moorish Caliphs. The cathedral contains both Moorish and Christian architecture and a unique and fascinating combination of styles. However, Oriental design dominates the building. The building complex that surrounds the courtyard and its orange trees is known as the Patio De Los Naranjos and is one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings in the world. The immense prayer hall is the glorious focal point of the Mezquita and its several hundred columns and horseshoe arches create an oasis of stone. The 16th century cathedral is located in the middle of a splendid forest of columns and precious marble and paintings by Palomino decorate the main altar. Here the Moors created a solid and enduring monument of their art and one of Córdoba's most outstanding landmarks. GTR-DVD-1034 - Archaeologists attach great importance to the ancient ruined city of Kerkouane. It is the only Punic city that has retained its original form and has not been altered or rebuilt by subsequent cultures. To the present, archaeologists have uncovered a long, horseshoe-shaped area of approximately 500m revealing an outline of alleys and streets.Unlike Roman design, each house had its own private sanitation system, which was connected to an extensive canalisation network. The majority of the floors were decorated with mosaics and most of the dwellings also had their own small well. The buildings were constructed in various ways using many different techniques and baked bricks, as well as clay, were among the main building materials. Some of the ruins contain floor mosaics that are still in very good condition and the tiny marble stones of the mosaics were sometimes used in special designs such as the so-called 'Tanit Symbol' that is a recurrent motif in the entrances to the dwellings and gravesites outside the town.
