VPG-DVD-152 - TRINIDAD Located to the south of the Caribbean island of Cuba, Trinidad was founded by the Spaniard, Velazquez and in the 18th century the city experienced great wealth and recognition through the cultivation of sugar cane. The exclusive palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city with tall wooden gates, barred windows and original roof tiles that characterise the style of bygone days. The Palacio Padron is located on the Plaza Mayor, the centre of the city. A few years ago the palace was lovingly restored in painstaking detail and transformed into an archaeological museum. Around the main square the most beautiful palaces stand in rows and are an impressive indicator of the colonial lifestyle enjoyed by the former sugar aristocracy. The slave trade and the cultivation of sugar cane made the island's inhabitants incredibly wealthy and Trinidad became the most important cultural and trade centre in the whole of Cuba. The former palace of the Cantero sugar barons now houses the Museo De Historia, an impressive building in the Calle Bolivar in which visitors can marvel at old timepieces, porcelain, furniture and valuable crystal chandeliers. The seven storey Torre De Iznaga rises menacingly into the sky, the bells of which once summoned the plantation slaves to work while watchmen surveyed the valley from above because of the fears of the plantation owners who believed that one day the slaves would rebel against them. Splendid exotic beauty in a land situated between sun and socialism, sugar and cigars, rumba and revolution. In Trinidad it is as though everything is in a state of suspended animation waiting to be kissed awake.

OTT-DVD-132 - The legendary Menam Chao Phraya is often referred to as, 'The Royal River,' and is the largest and also the most important river in Thailand. For several centuries the everyday life of Bangkok, formerly known as Krung Thep, has been closely associated with its canals. The most important sanctuary in the city's historic royal palace in Bangkok is Wat Phra Keo, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, with its highly visible gilded Chedi. The devotion to Buddhism of the Royal Thai Chakri Dynasty is displayed here in impressive style. One treasure in particular stands out, the Emerald Buddha, the temple's most sacred object. Boat tours through the Klongs, narrow and extensive canals, are a good way to enjoy the city's sights. Even though the Klongs are not as important as they were a century or more ago they are an atmospheric reminder of the past. It is not surprising that Bangkok was once referred to as 'The Venice of the East'. Even though shipping is no longer important on the three hundred and seventy kilometre long river, the Menam Chao Phraya is frequented by hordes of tourists. In addition to numerous historic buildings, the boat passes by many districts in which poverty is rife. Around sixty kilometres north of Bangkok the boat arrives at a natural island in the middle of the Chao Phraya. From the landing stage it is only a few steps to the former royal summer residence of Bang Pa In. A few kilometres upriver is the ruined city of Ayutthaya, the legendary capital of a kingdom that once influenced a huge area of southeast Asia for more than four hundred years. Due to the many historic sites and fascinating sanctuaries that were built along the banks of the Menam Chao Phraya, this great 'royal' river has played a vital role in the cultural development of Thailand, a land that even today still exudes the exotic ambience of a golden age.

OTT-DVD-115 - On Tour... Route Of The White Town Exploring The White Villages of Andelusia RUTA POR LOS PUEBLOS BLANCOS The White Villages located along the Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos shine out of the landscape like a multitude of tiny pearls, an intriguing sight that captures the essence of Spain in the atmospheric simplicity of Andalusia. The Pueblos Blancos are of practical construction. Their thick walls protect against the heat of the sun and they always look new because each year they are treated to a new coat of whitewash. The mighty Castelar De La Frontera was built in the 12th century and the proud old fortress situated above Algeciras can still be admired today. Seventy tightly-packed houses are located within its walls and in 1971 its inhabitants left the Castillo and built a new village on the plains. Today, wooden shutters ensure a degree of privacy and for many centuries thick stone walls protected those who lived here from invasion. The route continues to Jimena De La Frontera where fertile pastures and large slopes with cork oaks and olive trees flank the roads. Ronda enjoys a unique location. It sits on a rock plateau above a steep 165 metre deep canyon. Both the Romans and the Moors, who were defeated by the catholic kings in 1485, left their traces in the city. Due to its location, Ronda was virtually impregnable during the early part of the Middle Ages thus it became one of the last Moorish bastions in Spain. The journey along the edge of the Sierra De Grazalema Nature Park features fertile pastures and lush meadows, overlooked by the peaks of the Penon Grande. The Pueblos look like white spots created by human hand, scattered across a green landscape. To experience the historic flavour of Spain, the Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos is well worth traversing!

NPM-DVD-120 - Nature Parks: ARCHES PARK UtahAround 8 kilometres north of the small town of Moab in the State of Utah, is the entrance to one of the most famous national parks in the United States, Arches Park, a national park that owes its remarkable popularity to its gigantic sandstone arches of which there are approximately 2000. Covering 300 square kilometres, the park is relatively small but it is one of the USA's most popular nature reservations. From Courthouse Towers with its outstanding rock formations there's a 38 kilometre panoramic route known as Scenic Drive that takes in the rocky sand dunes of Petrified Dunes which are evidence that the park owes much of its geological phenomena to its famous stone arches. Balanced Rock is one of the park's main attractions. Weighing around 3,600 tons, the sandstone rock balances precipitously at a height of 22 metres supported on a fragile looking foundation. Close to Cache Valley is the massive, isolated stone structure of Delicate Arch. Although it appears to be fragile it has been proudly standing close to the nearby valley since prehistoric times. The Devil's Garden Trailhead leads to a large collection of the most beautiful stone arches. With the passage of time, ice forced apart the softer layers of stone and countless years of relentless erosion created these natural arches along with all the other bizarre rock formations of the plateau. Created by the two elements of water and air that have cut deep into the sandstone, Tunnel Arch is the first arch that can be seen when walking through "Devil's Garden". This natural stone arch is so smooth that it could easily be compared with a modern Man-made tunnel. A few metres away there's another small opening in the rock wall, Tunnel Arch, where the surrounding vegetation creates a romantic 'Wild West' atmosphere. In this incredible land of sandstone arches, the fascinating rock formations and unique beauty of Arches Park is surely one of the most spectacular sights in the natural world.

GTR-DVD-1229 - Around four hundred and twenty kilometres from the Thai metropolis of Bangkok in the far north of the central plains, is the legendary city of Si Satchanalai. Today only sad ruins testify to the splendour of the former twin city and ancient capital of Sukhothai. However, after Si Satchanalai had lain in ruins for many centuries some areas of the city were restored by teams of dedicated archaeologists. The city dates back to the 13th century and at that time Si Satchanalai was the official residence of the viceroy of Thailand's first important kingdom during the Sukhothai Period. The Wat Chang Lom Temple is one of the most remarkable sanctuaries in the heart of the old city. The builder of this temple site was one of the most famous rulers of Sukhothai, King Ramkhamhaeng. Close to the river banks of the Menam Yom is the great Laterite Prang that was originally built in early Khmer design and was later embellished with stucco work. This cult building is the most important attraction of the Wat Chao Chan. Later, Si Satchanlai lost its political influence. Shortly after this the people began to vacate their city leaving not only their fine statues but also the place that they loved. GTR-DVD-1104 - In Egypt, near to the Mariut See, is the most respected Christian pilgrimage destination of Abu Mena. Today, only its ruins remain. For more than 1700 years, the Kopts worshipped the holy martyr, Mena and in his honour, a Christian monastery was established here during the 3rd century. Due to the construction of several canals and also the distribution of water from the River Nile, the region is gradually being transformed into fertile agricultural land. However, Egypt's water supply system threatens to destroy the ruins of this historic sand-covered pilgrimage site. On the excavation site, the finely crafted stone reliefs of Abu Mena's submerged architecture offer a titillating promise of what lies beneath. Once a small town, today only a tranquil expanse of ruins and eroded walls are evidence of this once flourishing and lively centre for the pilgrims of early Christianity. The foundations and dimensions of its churches can still be discerned today. Should the ruins of this ancient place of pilgrimage be allowed to sink beneath the desert forever, the loss of this unique early Christian monument would be inestimable.
