VPG-DVD-105 - St. Petersburg In 1703, Tsar Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in the swampy delta mouth of the Newa. It became Russia's capital city and remained so until 1918 when Lenin and his revolutionary Bolshevik government moved to Moscow. Today it is a living monument to the lives and times of Russia's Imperial Tsars The Winter Palace contains Russia's largest museum, the Eremitage, which houses more than two and a half million exhibits. Since Peter the Great, Russian rulers purchased many major works of art, but it was Catherine The Great who acquired complete collections from the auction houses of Europe. The Admiralty, with its needle-shaped, gold-plated tower, is one of the city's most famous landmarks, its grand architecture depicting the emergence of Russia as a naval power and the marvellous Isaaks Cathedral has the third largest dome in the world. Twenty four thousand tree stumps were used for its foundations and it can accommodate a congregation of 14,000. The Peter And Paul Cathedral was the burial place of the Tsars and it contains the marble coffin of Peter the Great. The most colourful church in Russia is the Resurrection Of Christ Cathedral which was built on the orders of Tsar Alexander the Third on land where, in 1881, his father, Alexander the Second, had been killed by a bomb planted by a revolutionary group. Russian Baroque and Russian Classicism were established in St. Petersburg -- city of monumental events, outstanding architecture and an Imperial metropolis on the grand scale.

VPG-DVD-230 - IRELAND Ireland is one of Europe's most green and mysterious islands and everyone who visits this isolated island in the Atlantic Ocean is given a very warm welcome. Dublin is the capital of the Irish Republic and it is a city of musicians, poets and dreamers, as well as being a financial centre. Its many old buildings indicate its long and dramatic past. It was founded by the Vikings within a wonderful valley where the River Liffey flows into the Atlantic Ocean. South west of Dublin is Kildare, the heart of Ireland's horse racing. In 1902 the Irish national stud, Tully House, was founded there. Rich and eccentric Scottish brewery heir, Colonel William Hall-Walker, had the idea of a creating unique horse breeding scheme that would be based upon astrological calculation. The Wicklow Mountains are a natural paradise of mountains, swamps and lakes, beautiful valleys and a fascinating mountain landscape to the south of Dublin. Jerpoint Abbey near Thomastown dates back to the twelfth century. It is one of the most beautiful Cistercian ruins in Ireland. The Cistercians built the monastery in characteristic style and one of the stone sarcophaguses is said to contain the bones of Holy Nicolas who was buried there by the Crusaders. Although much of it has remained unspoiled, Ireland has undergone much change. It is a land of great natural beauty, healthy commercial success and excellent hospitality: a wild green island set in the wild Atlantic Ocean!

VPG-DVD-124 - DUBAI Dubai is a fairy-tale holiday paradise with romantic desert scenery and a long history. Like an ancient kingdom from the 'One Thousand And One Nights' it's the second largest state in the United Arab Emirates located on the northern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The trading of dates, goats, pearls and fish brought the city much prosperity and it gradually developed into the largest trading centre in the Near East. Maritime life has always played a significant role in the lives of those who live on the Arabian Gulf. With its triangular sails and a design that has remained unchanged for thousands of years, the dhow still sails these waters. Hundreds of them lie at anchor close to the old town on the banks of Dubai Creek. No other city in the United Arab Emirates possesses so many fascinating contrasts. But the past is gradually merging with the present and portrays a new and harmonious image. Dubai's impressive silhouette is in stark contrast to the desert sand and sparkling sea. The Deira district owes its prosperity to the various souks that were established there in the 19th century. At this time Dubai was already an important trading city with almost seven thousand inhabitants. The number of stalls in the souk rose to more than three hundred and a modest tax was imposed for the coffers of the local Sheikh. Amid the desert surroundings in front of the city gates is the Nad Al Sheba Camel Course where the intrepid creatures of the desert are trained during the winter months, the jockeys being young boys from Somalia and Pakistan. Dusty gravel roads lead into the Hajar Mountains, part of the splendid mountain landscape in the eastern section of the Emirates. Dubai's skyline has a new landmark, the Burj Al Arab, the only hotel in the world to have been awarded no less than seven stars! Built on a Man made island its design is that of a sail bent by the wind. Dubai: the height of luxury amid the desert sand - a glittering fairytale of the 21st century.

NPM-DVD-111 - Nature Parks MISSISSIPPI SWAMPS New OrleansNew Orleans is synonymous with good food, jazz and Mardi Gras and it was here that history was created: founded by France, conquered by Spain, bought by President Jefferson and occupied by theYankees! New Orleans also possesses the second largest harbour in the USA and even today they shout, „Full speed ahead!" as paddle steamers negotiate 'Ol Man River', the grand waters of the Mississippi that flow to the Mississippi Swamps. The Swamps are extensive and only experienced boatmen can find their way around the mass of main and side tributaries as it's easy to become disorientated, sight of the sky often being lost due to the density of the trees. In the past 5,000 years the Mississippi had seven different deltas prior to it being reinforced by embankments. When dykes strengthened the river, some side channels remained and these are the famous small rivers known as the Bayous, a labyrinth of small tributaries and waterways. ‚Cowens' is the name of the oldest life form in the swamp, a turtle that grows to about 10 to 25 centimetres long and feeds mainly on small fish and aquatic animals. Almost 30,000 hectares of swampland have been declared a nature reserve in which the complex balance between salt and freshwater reigns supreme and, when viewed from above, has the appearance of a strange network of city streets. The Delta area provides ideal conditions for many feathered species, including around four million ducks and also the national symbol of the USA, the white-headed sea eagle and the variety of animals living in this region, most notably the alligator, is also vast and includes beaver and racoon. The wonderful world of the Swamps with their legends and myths draw the traveller under their spell, a bewitching labyrinth of infinite waterways each one holding a special fascination. The allure of Nature is surely as puzzling as the innermost secrets of the Mississippi Swamps!

NPM-DVD-106 - Nature Parks ACADIA New EnglandThe Acadia National Park is located in the North Eastern region of Maine in the United States and measures 142 square kilometres The close proximity of the North Atlantic Ocean to the coastal forest landscape is one of the park's irresistible attractions. During fall, the season in which New England is at its most magnificent, the forests come alive with soft, warm colours and the entire landscape becomes transformed by this 'fifth season' of the year. Thunder Hole is a further attraction. Onlookers seem almost awe struck when witnessing the relentless might of the Atlantic and the unexpected sound of thunder that emanates from a small cave within the granite cliffs caused by the sea as it floods into the air-filled cave thus releasing the air pressure from within with fantastic, thunderous effect. Loop Road is a scenic route that travels from coast to countryside and passes a picturesque and charming semi-timbered house, the Jordan Pond Gate House, built by John D. Rockefeller in1932. Created from a glacier, Jordan Pond is relatively deep and at its northern end there are two round hills, the 'Bubbles' from the summit of which the vast landscape of the glowing forest below is even more impressive. Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic coast. The scant vegetation of this area is quite surprising especially as it is in such close proximity to the nearby forests. During September, when the first so-called 'leaf reports' are announced in the newspapers and on television, there's an air of excitement. The beginning of the Indian Summer is the time of the 'Leaf Peepers.' Whether they travel to the park by car, foot, horse and carriage or by way of a rented mountain bike, visitors to Acadia's beautiful forests have a wide selection of leaves from which to choose. During fall, the red and orange of the maple trees and the golden yellow hues of aspen and birch melt together in a breathtaking carpet of colour that seems to cover the entire country. Acadia is a veritable arcadia!

GTR-DVD-1098 - A fertile plain beneath the mountains of Djebel Zerhoun surrounds Volubilis, the most important ancient Roman excavation site in Morocco. The former administration seat of the Roman African province of Mauretania Tingitana contained all the necessary attributes of a highly developed city. The ruins date back to the first and third centuries A.D., a golden time in this region. The production of oil and grain made the city prosper and during its golden years the city covered an area of around 40 hectares. The Roman settlement remained free from invasion for many years and was therefore able to develop without interruption from hostile forces. As Volubilis became the most important Roman trading centre and governmental seat in Morocco, an area devoted entirely to villas was developed to the North East of the Decumanus Maximus Road. The high standard of living enjoyed in those times is demonstrated by the richly detailed architecture of this area. An allegorical picture of the four seasons is a frequently recurring motif in the floor mosaics of the splendid villas that are located along the Decumanus Maximus Road. Another fine residence, the House Of Hercules, depicts the legendary deeds of this hero of antiquity. Even today, almost seventeen hundred years after the first impressive mosaics were laid within the villas, their colours are amazingly fresh and vibrant. GTR-DVD-1102 - Once travelled by caravan trains, the seemingly infinite horizons of the region's salt lakes have remained unchanged. But on the edge of this lifeless world is the flourishing city of Tozeur. This small charming city in the south west of Tunisia is surrounded by a beautiful and fertile oasis landscape, the Oasis of Djerid: the oasis of the palm branch. The Bled El Djerid Oasis features approximately 200,000 palms and the dates that grow in this region, the Deglet Ennour, are considered to be among Tunisia's finest. The provincial capital of Tozeur is famous for its unique architecture and the buildings in the old part of the city, the Ouled Halef, are particularly fascinating. Hidden in one of the sunlit inner courtyards of the old area of the city is a small though extremely informative history and folklore museum that contains a large variety of Tozeur's traditional and historical objects that stem from its dwellings, crafts and trade, some of which date back to Roman times. The historic townscape of Tozeur is still influenced by the unique architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries and even today its charming alleys and idyllic courtyards are an influential centre of both Arabic and Islamic culture. GTR-DVD-1141 - Architecture and nature unite in perfect harmony in Skogskyrkogarden Cemetery in the south of Stockholm. Its unique design is based on a combination of fascinating elements. In 1993 this picturesque forest cemetery was designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Wild animals such as deer can be seen close to the gravestones thus highlighting the natural and idyllic atmosphere of this unique place. The tranquil forest that now extends over an old quarry remained mostly untouched during the construction of the cemetery in the first half of the 20th century. The cemetery is also the final resting place of a number of famous people such as legendary Hollywood actress Greta Garbo who was buried here in 1999. Arranged in sections, most of the graves are located in a tranquil pine forest. Thus the gravestones are as one with Nature, a concept substantially influenced by the architecture of Asplund and Lewerentz. The modern, classical and natural elements of Skogskyrkogarden have created a truly impressive and glorious monument. GTR-DVD-1204 - On a mountain summit seven hundred and fifty metres above the Mediterranean is Érice, the ancient town of Eryx. The well-fortified walls of its fortress once protected one of the oldest cities in Sicily. According to legend the Trojan, Aeneas, son of Aphrodite, established a town here after fleeing from the Greeks. First the goddess of love, Astrarte, was worshipped here followed by the Greek goddess Aphrodite, and then Venus who was worshipped by the Romans. Thus this location became a kind of 'love mountain' and a popular destination especially with male pilgrims as it no doubt appealed to their more romantic nature. The medieval city centre of Monte San Guiliano, as today's Érice was named by the Normans, has for many centuries remained almost unchanged. From the fortress, the Castello, there are clear views of the Sicilian coastline and Trapani Harbour, and far out across the Mediterranean. Beneath the walls of the fortress, in the 20th century Érice also became known as a research centre for both meteorology and oceanography. Érice is far more than just an historically rich settlement situated on a mountaintop. In the romantic ruins of the fortress above the former Acropolis, the atmosphere of ancient times still lives on. GTR-DVD-1161 - Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance and is one of the most beautiful and well preserved medieval towns in Brittany. Today, cobbled lanes and several half-timbered buildings highlight the town's colourful history and in 1066 many of Dinan´s inhabitants took part in the Norman Conquest and the Hundred Years´ War also left its traces here. However, despite its battles and sieges the picturesque old town has survived to the present day and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Brittany. The town´s defences were constructed in the 14th century. A circular wall, two and a half kilometres long, protected the inhabitants of Dinan from hostile attack. Due to its well planned defences the town remained untouched and even today it's like stepping back into the Middle Ages.
