VPG-DVD-189 - MANDALAY Mandalay, 'The City Of Art', is located within the centre of Myanmar, that was formerly known as Burma. It was founded in 1857 and up until the British conquered it in 1885 it was the capital of the kingdom of Burma. Two thousand four hundred years after the death of Buddha , King Mindon ordered the one hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants of Amarapura to relocate here. The well preserved Shwe Inbin Monastery is one of the last examples of the traditional monasteries whose splendour once made Mandalay famous. The complex has all the architectural elements of a typical Burmese monastery but it is its beautiful wood carvings that are the most striking. To the north of the city is the two hundred and thirty six metre high Mandalay Mountain that dominates the plains below. The tree covered mountain is dominated by the towers of many temples and as Buddha once lived on this mountain it is considered to be extremely sacred and thus contains several pagodas and shrines. Amarapura, the 'Immortal City', is situated in the south. It was the first of the country's royal cities and today it is a small town in which its inhabitants earn their living from weaving. On the western hills are some of the most elegant and splendid monastery complexes such as the Umin Thonzeh Pagoda where forty five Buddha figures stand in a semi-circle, dignified and benign. Once known as the Centre Of The World and today the religious and financial centre of the region, Mandalay lies at the heart of Burmese culture.

NPM-DVD-116 - Nature Parks NAIVASHA KenyaSurrounded by the picturesque mountain range of Mount Longonot and located one thousand nine hundred metres above sea level, is Lake Naivasha, the highest and most beautiful lake in Kenya's Rift Valley. The Lake Naivasha region was made famous by the British painter and conservationist, Joy Adamson, who wrote the novel, Born Free, in the area. The Lake Naivasha Country Club was inaugurated in 1937. It was then called the Lake Hotel and was an important stop on the journey between Durban and London. In what is now the country club's park, passengers once disembarked from flying boats while travelling to Nairobi, situated a hundred kilometres from Lake Naivasha. In addition to great numbers of wild geese, Lake Naivasha is home to many rare and spectacular species of bird such as marabu and cormorant and the pelican also finds much nourishment in the five metre deep lake. Despite their thorny branches the leaves and flowers of the acacia trees on Crescent Island are an important source of nourishment for several animals. The island is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Lake Naivasha and is in full view of the two thousand seven hundred and seventy-six metre high summit of dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. As the sun begins to set in the twilight hours and creates a colourful natural spectacle in the sky, it is clear why Lake Naivasha has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful of all the lakes in Kenya's Rift Valley.

NPM-DVD-107 - Nature Parks MASSAI MARA KenyaThe Massai Mara Nature Reserve is the most famous and most visited nature and game reserve in Kenya. Ninety-five varieties of mammals roam its paradise-like terrain and for bird lovers there are around five hundred different species. An estimated 1.4 million gnus live on the reserve and in addition there are around 550,000 gazelle, 200,000 zebra and 64,000 impala. The nature reserve offers visitors comfortable furnished accommodation, Massai style, plus a range of fascinating safaris. At the beginning of the dry season in July and August, the gnu's annual migration from the Serengeti takes place when, with a tumultuous din, countless thousands of animals fight their way through river torrents until they reach the lush vegetation of the Massai Mara. The Massai exist by breeding cattle and throughout the year these semi-nomads move through the savannah seeking out fresh pasture for their herds. The Massai live in 'kraals', low, igloo-shaped huts erected only by the females of the tribe and made from twigs, grass and a mixture of cow dung and mud. The huts are divided into a children's room where the young Massai spend the night with new born calves and lambs, and also a combined living and sleeping area that is also used for cooking. Crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, hyenas, lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants: this nature reserve is home to all of them. The most species-rich savanna grassland on Earth, and its legendary wilderness, provide a fascinating glimpse into a wonder world of nature, a remarkable harmony of wild animals and wonderful landscapes beneath huge African skies. Africa's largest wildlife spectacular gives its visitors an abundance of exciting adventures and countless unforgettable moments

IR-DVD-102 - Experience the world's first totally non-smoking cruise on Carnival's Paradise. On this episode of GREAT CRUISES we board the world's first non-smoking cruise ship, one of the "Fun Ships" of Carnival Cruise Lines, the PARADISE, as she sets sail from Miami to the ports of Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios, in the Western Caribbean. We'll enjoy many of the side trips, including a visit to the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Later, we'll visit a turtle farm, snorkel with giant stingrays and dive a hundred feet below the sea on a submarine in the Cayman Islands. And finally, we'll visit Ocho Rios, Jamaica where we'll tour lush botanical gardens and climb six hundred feet up spectacular Dunn's River Falls. Our first port of call is Cozumel, an island off the eastern shores of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Here we board a high-speed catamaran to take us to the port of Playa Del Carmen back on the mainland. After a short bus ride we reach the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum. Our second port-of-call is Grand Cayman, a relatively small island renowned as one of the world's largest financial centers, being home to over 580 banks and trust companies holding almost a trillion dollars in assets! A favorite tourist haunt is Hell's Post Office, so named after the amazing limestone rock formations. You can pick up a tee shirt that, well, says it all! We jumped at the chance to visit "Stingray City" where each day dozens of gigantic stingrays, some as large as six feet in diameter, congregate to be fed pieces of squid by hand, from eager tourists. Our final port of call is Ocho Rios in Jamaica. Yah Mon! Christopher Columbus declared the Blue Mountains of Jamaica to be "the fairest land eyes ever beheld... where the mountains touch the sky. We head up through the rain forests of Fern Gully, a 3-mile road built on an old riverbed that winds through a lush tropical canyon, home to over 2,000 different species of ferns, and a few local characters. A pleasant surprise as we toured Ocho Rios was the Taj Mahal duty-free plaza an architectural parody of India's matchless tomb strategically placed opposite the exit from the pier.High on a hill overlooking the town is Shaw Park Botanical Gardens, a beautiful and relaxing experience, created in the nineteenth century as a private gentleman's estate. Acres of lawns and terraces tumble down the hillside and are enhanced by an interesting variety of native and imported trees, decorative shrubs and roses. Dunn's River Falls is Jamaica's premier attraction, visited by almost a million persons annually. It is a place of unique beauty where the river dances down a giant limestone staircase to a white sand beach and the warm blue Caribbean sea. Climbing the falls with a guide is easier than it looks but there are steps with handrails and wooden observation decks for the non-athletic. In the river there are pools to swim in, caves behind falls, and mini-whirlpools.

GTR-DVD-1158 - Suur, for thousands of years the mighty tower-flanked Istanbul Land Wall was vital for both the defence and further development of the city. The Byzantine emperor, Theodosius The Second, ordered the construction of a new and mighty fortification in 408 A.D.The fortress was built during the reign of Sultan Mehmet Fatih The Second. It was an architectural symbol of the defeat of Constantinople when following more than a thousand years of resistance the inhabitants of the city were forced to surrender to the Osmanic conquerors. The city's most influential dignitaries were imprisoned in the fortress and many perished within its walls. Even the region's sultans were executed there. The fall of the Byzantine Empire created a new flowering period in the city and today Istanbul's famous wall reaches from the Marmara Sea to the Golden Horn, the very long and narrow tributary of the Bosporus.Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. GTR-DVD-1095 - Nefta Four hundred kilometres southwest of the Tunisian capital of Tunis and close to the Algerian border in Bled El Jerid is the delightful oasis town of Nefta. Beyond its bright cupolas and angled roofs is the breathtaking expanse of the enormous Schott Dscherid Salt Plain. What formerly served as the rear guard of the Roman Empire and that was subsequently used as a bishop's residence developed into the most important religious centre of an ancient Muslim sect known as the Sufis. In addition to Nefta's twenty-four mosques there are also more than a hundred sacred burial places known as 'Marabouts'. The life-giving reason that led to the origin of Nefta in the midst of this barren, desert like landscape can be found close to the historic centre of the town: precious water bubbles out of a total of a hundred and fifty two Artesian Wells that has brought new life to more than nine hundred and fifty hectares of lifeless desert. The desert wind, the Scirocco, is a reminder of the harshness of the surrounding landscape. Even with the protection of the oasis, on some days the wind manages to blow its way through the town. But as the sun gradually sets below the horizon, Nefta is like a scene from the One Thousand And One Nights. GTR-DVD-1182 - Along historic walls, numerous beautiful gates lead into the centre of Jaipur. The city's well- preserved old town, built on the orders of Maharaja Jai Singh, gives the impression that it is almost exactly as it was at the time of its creation in 1727. In the 18th century it was believed that both the city and palace were unlikely to encounter hostile attack but subsequent events prove this not to be so. Although a number of military defences existed in 1748, the city was attacked by the Maraths. The exquisite residence of the Maharajas, the Hawa Mahal, otherwise known as the Palace Of The Wind, is now regarded as the finest architectural landmark in Jaipur. However, hiding beyond its magnificent honeycomb-like facade there is a simple staircase: for the building was the domain of the royal harem! Outside the city, close to the route that led to the former capital of Amber, a fairytale-like castle rises up from a small artificial lake. The Jal Mahal was built in the 18th century by Madho Singh for the royal hunt. Due to its many fascinating architectural and cultural treasures, Jaipur is deservedly one of the most popular travel destinations in India.
