VPG-DVD-213 - ICELAND Iceland is an island born of fire and ice with white glaciers, black beaches and green meadows: a land of geysers, waterfalls and volcanoes. Reykjavik is set amid a fascinating landscape, a metropolis on the outermost edge of civilisation and the world's northernmost capital city. A little outside the city is an attraction that is a meeting place for one and all, The Blue Lagoon, the largest bath tub in the world! The mineral water it contains has a temperature of forty degrees centigrade and the milky-blue pool has been proven to possess beneficial healing qualities. Southeast of The Blue Lagoon is Hveragerdi that is set within an idyllic valley. Due to its protected location and numerous thermal springs, in 1929 a garden city originated there and within its many greenhouses grow vegetables, fruit and exotic flowers. The small coastal picturesque village of Vik with its few houses and around three hundred inhabitants is located in a valley close to a bay. The mystical looking rocks seem to protect this place that has the most rainfall in what is an already rainy region and above which the rain clouds are often alive with both thunder and lightning. Iceland is a fascinating world of water, fire and ice and full of breathtaking beauty and overwhelming contrast. It is one of the last natural paradises on Earth.

VPG-DVD-119 - ALTO ADIGE The Strada Delle Dolomiti is a good mountain road that travels through a picturesque nature reserve amidst some of the most beautiful mountains in Europe, an enchanting region in northern Italy, the Alto Adige. The age-old charm of the historical city centre of Cortina d´Ampezzo is captivating and the facades of its chalets and hotels are richly decorated with frescos. Alpe Di Siusi, the Seiser Alm, contains a fifty square kilometre recreation area. In summer, hikers come to this high plateau and in winter it's popular with cross-country sportsmen. Europe's largest alpine meadow is located at an altitude of two thousand metres above sea level and horse-drawn sleighs are at the ready for local excursions pulled by tough and hardy Haflinger horses. The region's metropolis is Bolzano-Bozen that is situated in a valley basin that opens up to the south. The symbol of the city is its Late Gothic Bishop Church and in the adjoining Baroque chapel there is a collection of priceless frescos. The stone images and grotesque symbols on its facade indicate the great influence of the basic doctrines of the Church. In the small alleys of the picturesque old town the houses have arcades that are known as Lauben. Luxurious middle-class houses with artistically painted facades adorn the alleys of the old town that was used by the Romans as a central resting place while travelling to the north. Brunico-Bruneck is the main village of Puster Valley. In 1250 Bishop Bruno of Brixen built this strongly fortified city and castle against the monarchs of the Tyrol. The rows of houses in the Stadtgasse date back to the 15th and 16th centuries and make it one of the most beautiful streets in the Tyrol. High on a rock at the entrance to the Valle Aurina-Ahrntal is Taufers Castle, one of the mightiest fortified buildings in the Tyrol. For history combined with fairytale scenery, the Alto Aldige is the place to be!

OTT-DVD-103 - On Tour... STRADA DELLE DOLOMITI The Majesty Of The DolomitesSTRADA DELLE DOLOMITI The Strada Delle Dolomiti that stretches across 109 kilometre across the mountain landscape of the Southern Tyrol is a superb and dramatic experience in any season. Past centuries-old farmhouses, mountain peaks tease the sky majestically and whether it's mountain climbing or hiking, the Dolomites offer something for everyone and for motorcars, cyclists and motorbikes, the mountain roads pose a real challenge. Three pinnacles are considered to be the essence of the Dolomites, namely the Western, Large and Small Pinnacle. The view of the three pinnacles is magnificent as Nature manifests itself as the petrified air of high altitude, the fickleness of the wind and the blinding light of eternal snow. Cortina D´Ampezzo is Italy's main alpine resort and visitors from all over the world holiday in this splendid town the centre of which has a good deal of old world charm and where the facades of its chalets and hotels are covered with frescos painted by great artists. The stretch of land from the Schlüterhütte to the Grödner Joch has been described as "a pearl of a landscape". The route travels across small peaks and leads to a meadow of edelweiss and a mountain journey via cable car brings the steep mountain walls to within one's grasp. At the Giro d´Italia, the world's finest cyclists fight it out over several Dolomite passes. One of the laps crosses the highest point, the Pordoi Pass. For those who wish to spend some time here, there are several first class hotels, well-equipped Alpine chalets and comfortable guesthouses. The Dolomites have been granted the status of World Heritage Site by Unesco, a small section of Planet Earth that should be nurtured, quite rightly, as though it is a unique and rare work of natural art.

OTT-DVD-115 - On Tour... Route Of The White Town Exploring The White Villages of Andelusia RUTA POR LOS PUEBLOS BLANCOS The White Villages located along the Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos shine out of the landscape like a multitude of tiny pearls, an intriguing sight that captures the essence of Spain in the atmospheric simplicity of Andalusia. The Pueblos Blancos are of practical construction. Their thick walls protect against the heat of the sun and they always look new because each year they are treated to a new coat of whitewash. The mighty Castelar De La Frontera was built in the 12th century and the proud old fortress situated above Algeciras can still be admired today. Seventy tightly-packed houses are located within its walls and in 1971 its inhabitants left the Castillo and built a new village on the plains. Today, wooden shutters ensure a degree of privacy and for many centuries thick stone walls protected those who lived here from invasion. The route continues to Jimena De La Frontera where fertile pastures and large slopes with cork oaks and olive trees flank the roads. Ronda enjoys a unique location. It sits on a rock plateau above a steep 165 metre deep canyon. Both the Romans and the Moors, who were defeated by the catholic kings in 1485, left their traces in the city. Due to its location, Ronda was virtually impregnable during the early part of the Middle Ages thus it became one of the last Moorish bastions in Spain. The journey along the edge of the Sierra De Grazalema Nature Park features fertile pastures and lush meadows, overlooked by the peaks of the Penon Grande. The Pueblos look like white spots created by human hand, scattered across a green landscape. To experience the historic flavour of Spain, the Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos is well worth traversing!

OTT-DVD-125 - The journey through the active volcanic landscape of Iceland features many breathtaking sights. Reykjavik, also known as 'Smokey Bay', is one of the smallest and cleanest capitals in the world and the northernmost capital on the Planet. Many of the houses of the Old Town are protected monuments such as its oldest building that dates back to 1751. The fishing industry plays an important role in Iceland's economy and accounts for around eighty per cent of its export trade. Whale watching is the ideal way to experience the giants of the deep, mainly mink, humpback and fin whales. The Blue Lagoon is the country's most popular bathing location with turquoise water at a temperature of 40°C surrounded by lava and its water so full of minerals that it has a healing effect. With its many glaciers, volcanoes and rivers Iceland is an Eldorado for those with an interest in geology. The mighty Gullfoss Waterfall hurls down into the abyss below while the Skógafoss, one of Iceland's highest waterfalls, plunges sixty metres across the cliffs. With its numerous waterfalls Iceland is well endowed with large natural energy reserves. Vik is located in a picturesque valley and although the winds there are extremely fierce the village is a popular starting point for walking trips. Measuring 8,300 square kilometres, the Vatnajökull Glacier is the largest in Europe. Remarkably, each of Europe's other glaciers would fit within it. Iceland is a land of geysers, volcanoes, lava deserts, waterfalls and green meadows. A natural fantasy of water, fire and ice!

NPM-DVD-115 - Nature Parks TSITSIKAMMA South AfricaOne half of the Tsitsikamma Park is located in South Africa's Western Cape and the other in the Eastern Cape. During Europe's winter months many of the world's 830 bird species migrate to South Africa and it's not unusual to come across a meadow that contains hundreds of eye-catching storks and anything from a pygmy shrew that weighs only a few ounces to the elephant that weighs several tons. 20,000 varieties of plants, about 10% of all the plants in the world, grow in South Africa and of these, 8000 are to be found in the Cape region. Tsitsikamma is the country's first National Marine Park, its 65,000 hectares including an 80-kilometre coastline. With 24,000 varieties of flowering plants, South Africa breaks all records. Many kinds of Cape flora have found their way to Europe, such as the geranium, lily and gladioli. The park contains an abundance of cacti of all shapes and sizes and an amazing 600 varieties of heather. Following the coastline is the narrow footpath of the Waterfall Trail, an impressive route that leaves an indelible impression. This section of the Cape region is considered to be one of the world's most beautiful coastlines. For some time, Tolkien lived in Knysna and while visiting this region was inspired to write his world famous novel, The Lord of the Rings. The ancient forests captivate far less poetically ambitious people than Tolkien as each visitor becomes totally immersed in this green fairytale world and soon nurtures a special respect for it. And, who knows, if one looks very closely, perhaps a goblin or a fairy will appear from behind a fern! Well laid-out, easy to cover, and yet unique. The Tsitsikamma National Park provides its visitors with a remarkable blend of tranquillity and adventure.

NPM-DVD-124 - Nature Parks MONTE ETNA Sicily, ItalyA proud and mighty volcano rises above eastern Sicily, Mount Etna. It is the largest volcano in Europe and the undisputed ruler of this fascinating Mediterranean island. Despite the all pervasive presence of this volcano the nearby hills and surroundings of Mount Etna have been inhabited by Man for many thousands of years. The journey to Etna's summit passes through various vegetation and climate zones. Most of the region's rain falls during the colder months as summer time in Sicily is usually extremely hot and dry. At the higher altitudes of Mongibello, as the local people refer to their volcano, there is snow right up until the early summer when, as the temperature begins to rise, the lower slopes are transformed into blossoming and fertile meadows. The snow on the summit region of Etna does not hide the fact that deep inside the volcano is an unimaginable natural furnace. New lava masses begin to pour out that have a temperature of around a thousand degrees Celsius. One thousand nine hundred and twenty-seven metres above sea level is the Rifugio Sapienza, a place where it is possible to take a closer look at the volcano. In recent years it has been expanded to cater for the needs of an increasing number of tourists. It is surprising that this captivating mountain world and its alpine scenery are located in the most southerly region of Italy. However, things here can change at great speed, although it is usually a change in the weather rather than any serious volcanic activity! Mount Etna is unique in Europe not only due to its volcanic activity and scenery but because it combines myth with historical and archaeological fact and is therefore one of the most truly magical places on Earth.

GTR-DVD-1199 - Proudly and majestically the 'E Temple' that it is believed was originally built in honour of the Greek goddess, Hera, rises up from the meadows of Selinunte. Although rebuilt in recent times, its columns are evocative of Sicily's colourful history. For many centuries little was visible of the once important city of Selinus that is situated on the border of the former Greek Empire. Tall sand dunes once covered the impressive architectural heritage of this coastal city, including the buildings of the eastern temple district. The ancient city was discovered in the sixteenth century by a Sicilian historian but it was not until the 1950's that the Hera Temple was restored. In 409 B.C. the Carthaginians attacked the formerly friendly city of Selinus, although the reason for this remains a mystery. The people of Selinus were unable to defend themselves against the military might of Hannibal thus large areas of the city were completely destroyed. Measuring around two hundred and eighty-four hectares, Selinunte is the largest archaeological excavation site in Europe and who knows how many more treasures may one day be discovered? Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.
