VPG-DVD-197 - SHAN STATE North of Burma's central plains is the exotic and fascinating Shan State, a beautiful landscape in South East Asia located on the eastern side of Myanmar. Once forty Shan monarchs ruled there but they lived in hostile times as Burmese kings and Chinese warlords fought against them to gain control of their fertile land. We begin our journey at Inlay Lake. The magical beauty of this body of water has attracted and fascinated people since time immemorial and this unique lake is home to the Intha people. The next leg of the journey leads to a far more tranquil section of the lake that features floating gardens that are around a hundred metres long and two metres wide and consist of a densely interwoven carpet of water hyancinths. Mandalay, 'The City Of Art', is located in the centre of Shan State. It was founded in 1857 and up until the British conquered it in 1885 it was the capital of the kingdom of Burma. The Mahamuni Pagoda is the centre of worship and is also where the Mahamuni Buddha is kept, the country's most highly worshipped Buddha statue. Around twelve kilometres beyond Hsipaw is the legendary Bagyo Pagoda. Surrounded by a magnificent wall it is thought that the sanctuary is more than seven hundred years old. An important festival takes place each year around Tabaung, the time of the full moon in February and March, and is the highlight of the town's cultural calendar. The Shan people in the north of Myanmar have most certainly retained their cultural heritage and Shan State is an exotic combination of both nature and culture and a land of beauty and joie de vivre!

VPG-DVD-137 - RABAT Rabat is the capital of Morocco and also its royal seat of power. The main residence of King Mohammed the Sixth is a fascinating modern metropolis. Along with its monumental works of art the fourth oldest of the Makhzen cities is also one of Morocco's most important. Cafés and workshops reflect daily life and most of the city's souks are divided into specialised areas with items such as leather goods, blankets and carpets for sale: and with a little haggling it's possible to purchase quality handicrafts at a very modest price! The Kasbah Des Oudaias was built by Yacoub El Mansour in the 12th century. It is located at Rabat's most elevated point and is like a village within the city. The eight metre high wall once protected the Kasbah and its inhabitants and the fortress is inhabited to the present day. Barred windows create an Andalusian ambience. The Kasbah is one of the most popular though most expensive addresses in Rabat. Throughout the centuries the Moroccan coast was dominated by pirates but the might of European colonialists put an end to their dubious activities. The mausoleum of Mohammed the 5th was built in 1967 and the tomb complex contains a mosque, a mausoleum and a small memorial that contains images of the king. At the end of the 12th century Yacoub El Mansour constructed the largest mosque in the Maghreb. At a height of sixty metres its minaret was taller than any other in North Africa. Four hundred columns support the prayer room and it has fourteen gates. Rabat is a fascinating capital city and royal residence. An exotic world that lies between both occident and orient.

VPG-DVD-139 - LISBOA Lisbon is a white city located on Portugal's River Tejo and is flamboyantly beautiful and full of melancholy, and also lively and bursting with colourful joie de vivre. The Praca Dom Pedro is more commonly known as the Rossio. At the northern end of the square is a former palace that has been transformed into a national theatre. The main square was once the setting of bull fights and up until 1820 and the Spanish Inquisition so called heretics were burned at the stake. The medieval Sé Patriacal Cathedral stands defiantly on a hillside. Following the Christian conquest the city's bishops' church was built on the foundations of a former mosque to commemorate victory over the Moors. On the city's highest hill is the marvellous Castelo De Sao Jorge. Since times immemorial this fortified complex has stood guard above the mouth of the Tejo. Little remains of the former Moorish royal residence in which Vasco Da Gama´s journey to India was once celebrated. Electricos is the name of Lisbon's unique trams that travel noisily through the old town They are an indelible feature of the city and negotiate the city's twisting alleys like an ancient roller-coaster within streets so narrow that pedestrians are forced to seek refuge in the nearest doorway. On the banks of the Tejo on the outskirts of the Belem district is the Mosteiro Dos Jeronimos. This superb historical building with its snow-white façade and adornments and figures in playful Manuelistic style dominates the entire city. Lisbon continues to be Portugal's unchanged treasure right up to the present day.

VPG-DVD-190 - DELHI Delhi is the political and administrative capital of India and the largest democracy in the world, a melting pot of both culture and religion plus a constantly expanding metropolis that has more than ten million inhabitants. Built on the site of twelve former cities it is the gateway to India and has been the country's centre of power for almost a thousand years. Jama Masjid, the Friday Mosque, is one of old Delhi's main landmarks, bequeathed to the city by the Mogul king, Shah Jahan. Its huge inner courtyard accommodates twenty thousand. Raj Ghat is a memorial to the country's former political leaders and once contained the funeral pyres of Mahatma Ghandi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Ghandi. Rajpath is the name of an impressive three hundred metre wide road flanked by green swathes and luxuriant fountains, remnants of British Imperial rule. The National Rail Museum contains an interesting collection of nostalgic locomotives, carriages and memorabilia and for those who do not wish to risk a journey on India's present day over-packed trains, the museum provides the perfect opportunity to imagine how it must have been on the Indian railroads of old. The Safdar-Jang Mausoleum was built in the final years of Mogul rule and is an architectural monument of this golden era. It contains each design element of this epoch, with a terrace-like substructure, painted stucco and a dome. No other city in this huge and diverse country demonstrates the dramatic history of India with all the intensity of colour as Delhi.

NPM-DVD-135 - The stunning rock formations of The Valley Of Fire are located about sixty minutes drive from the USA's famous gambling city of Las Vegas. The impressive rock formations of the Valley Of Fire are the geological monuments of time immemorial, its deep canyons and caves far removed from civilisation. Here, isolation reigns supreme including silence and an infinity of calm. This is a realm of fantasy where it's possible to see countless fascinating images in the rock as the imagination runs riot and creates something new with each blink of the eye. The rocks are often between a hundred and two hundred metres high and during summer time the unyielding temperature reaches between 50° and 60° Celsius. Over the centuries, various rodents and reptiles have conquered this landscape including iguanas, lizards, rabbits as well as rattlesnakes and foxes, the roadrunner and the desert turtle. The fiery colours of the artistically weathered stone sculptures, rock domes and bridges continuously burn into the landscape. Some of the gigantic formations appear precarious and vulnerable and give the impression that they could collapse at any moment. In the early evening sun the Valley Of Fire is like a Martian landscape, the red colour of the rock being even brighter and more intense as the sky darkens dramatically, the clouds hanging darkly and mysteriously over the fire-like mountains. An exciting climax to this blazing spectacle of Nature.

NPM-DVD-109 - Nature Parks THE DANUBE DELTA RomaniaThe Danube Delta, the second largest in Europe after that of the Volga, is located in the north east of the Dobrudscha and covers a total area of 4,152 km². Two thirds of it is in Romania, the remainder being in the Ukraine. The river, that in some areas is covered by reed, water lilies and numerous plant life, also boasts a large variety of rare birds such as the pelican, heron and cormorant that live side by side with seagulls, wild duck, geese, falcon and eagles that live in the willow forests. Since time immemorial, each day the waters of the Danube have washed 185,000 tons of mud into this coastal lake and also into the Black Sea and this has gradually created today's delta that divides into two large sections: the River Delta in the West and the Fluvial Maritime Delta in the East. Protecting the land from the water, the sturdy banks of the river are natural dikes beyond which the local inhabitants have built their small, reed-covered homes most of which are located ten to fifteen metres from the water's edge. The Delta's landscape possesses an ever-changing face across which both land and water constantly interact, each season of the year bringing its own special magic to the ever-changing beauty of this richly alluvial region. The tributaries are flanked by rows of willows and poplars and dragonflies vie from side to side of the shallow lakes. The Danube Delta's tributaries, lakes, forests, vegetation, birds and fish combine to create an indescribable feeling of solitude on each of its intriguing watery horizons.

NPM-DVD-117 - Nature Parks CANYONLANDS PARK UtahLocated in the south east of the U.S. State of Utah, the Canyonlands National Park is like something from another world with steep river valleys many hundreds of metres deep that wind majestically through a breathtaking landscape. The landscape of the high plateau is dominated by stone and contains a type of desert vegetation that is typical of Utah's wide open spaces. Tall trees are few and far between but the small rugged trees that grow on less nutrient ground have adjusted to the region's harsh climate. During dry summers the temperature frequently reaches more than 35 degrees, thus scant tufts of grass are the most frequent form of vegetation. The banks of both the Green River and Colorado River provide a perfect habitat for several domestic bird species such as ravens, buzzards, owls, heron and geese, while swallows and eagles nest on the higher terrain. Among all the natural beauty there are also numerous traces of human habitation that date from time immemorial that, in the southern section of the park, include the rock paintings and caves of the ancient Fremont People. Each of the numerous textures of the park's sandstone has been subjected to various degrees of erosion that has created a multitude of fascinating natural stone 'sculptures'. Whether it's the Island In The Sky, the Needles or the almost inaccessible Maze area, each section of the park is well worth a visit and for admirers of the American Wild West, this is the place to be! Despite its exceptional and remarkable natural beauty, the vast expanse of Canyonlands is still a well kept secret. A marvellous wonder of majestic Nature.

GTR-DVD-1162 - Tall, proud and powerful, Fort Meherangarh is located on a hill a hundred and twenty metres above the Indian town of Jodhpur. The fort dates back to 1459 and Rao Jodha, the leader of the Rathor, one of the country's most influential aristocratic families. The rooms, halls and courtyards of the palace still exude the legendary atmosphere and magical power of the former maharajas. However, gruesome events once took place in this location: the handprints of a former ruler's wives serve as a reminder of a cruel Hindu tradition. The burning to death of widows on their dead husband's funeral pyre was practised right up until the middle of the 20th century even though the then British colonial leaders prohibited it. Within sight of the fort there is another intriguing landmark of Jodhpur, the Jaswant Thada, magnificent burial place of the Rathor Dynasty. The garden was once used for cremation ceremonies. Its most striking memorial was built in honour of Jaswant Singh The Second. It is not surprising that Fort Meherangarh and the funeral monuments of Jaswant Thada are considered to be among the most important sites Jodhpur, former capital of the Marwar princes. The area around Mount Rushmore is also most striking as the Black Hills' mountain range is a masterpiece of nature.Twenty five kilometres south west of Mount Rushmore another stone image towers up from the landscape, the Crazy Horse Memorial. Created in 1947 it commemorates the famous chief of the Oglala Sioux. Its dimensions are even larger than those of Mount Rushmore and when completed it will be a hundred and ninety five metres long and a hundred and seventy two metres high! But the Mount Rushmore area is far more than just a symbol of American history.
