VPG-DVD-131 - FIRENZE Florence is the capital of Tuscany, a city of art and joie de vivre. With its magnificent tower the Palazzo Vecchio is a communal palace that has been the city's political centre since the beginning of the 14th century. Originally it was the seat of the city's Republican rulers but soon afterwards the MEDICI dynasty settled there, the cleverest and most powerful of the handful of families that ruled over the city. In front of the palace's façade there is a double life-sized statue that is a copy of Michelangelo's‚'David', and in the Galleria Dell` Accademia there are several further sculptures by the great artist that idealised and glorified the strength of the Renaissance people. The three-sided Gothic cathedral and the Campanile are tightly packed into the city centre's Cathedral Square and the Santa Maria Del Fiore Cathedral is a replica of St. Peters in Rome and the Cathedral of Milan. The bronze 'Tower To Paradise' adorns the city's most sacred building, the Battistero, its mighty inner-dome, in Byzantine style, being supported by strong Roman columns while, in a gigantic mosaic, Christ the 'Judge of the World' features alongside angels and battles with the devil. San Lorenzo was the Medici's cathedral and one of the earliest creations of the Florentine Renaissance. To make way for it, an entire section of the city was torn down, a process that cost the Medici a large sum of money. Close to the Holy Antonius Cloister there is now a monastery and a museum and everywhere there are striking frescos by the artist Monk, Fra Angelico, several of which are on view in the monastery and its surrounding buildings. It could be said that the world obtained its taste for culture from Florence, a city in which art and culture unite in beautiful completion.

The Khan El Khalili Bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, A Thousand And One Nights amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutenkhamen and Nofretete are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colourful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices. Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatimaic times. It was built on the ruins of an even older church in the Coptic district of Cairo. The three-aisled basilica was founded by Roman Christians at the end of the 4th century. Built in 1902, the Egyptian Museum's one hundred and fifty thousand exhibits amount to being one of the greatest historical collections in the world. When both the Greek and Roman civilisations had reached the zenith of their power, Egypt already had a history that dated back almost three thousand years. In 1830 King Mohammed Ali had a mosque built and named it after himself but it is now more commonly known as the Alabaster Mosque. It was eighteen years in construction and was built on the site of a former Mameluckan Palace. Egypt and its capital of Cairo is the oldest cultural land on Earth. A country that impresses with both its five thousand years of history and lively modern spirit.

OTT-DVD-105 - A cruise on the Nile in the wake of the ancient Egyptians, an adventure into the world of the Pharaohs and the exploration of their mammoth culture. A three-kilometre avenue of sphinxes leads from Luxor to Karnak. Built during the reigns of Ramses the 2nd and Amenophis the 3rd, this impressive avenue was dedicated to three gods of Thebes. The façade of the 260 metre long temple is decorated with six huge statues of Ramses. At night, the temple complex has an air of mystique. and light casts ghostly shadows all around as fearsome monuments gaze into infinity. At its zenith, a million people inhabited Thebes. The necropolis covers 25 km² and the graves of 64 kings, queens and those in High Office have been discovered there. With the exception of Amenophis, each of the pharaohs of the new realm was buried in the necropolis, as well as the legendary, Tutanchamun. Edfu with its tower, outer walls, buildings and halls is still in almost perfect condition and at its entrance royal falcons carved from granite stand guard. Its walls are an authentic history book of Egyptian myth and legend. The Egyptian gods are everywhere as impressive statues, fragile carvings and paintings. Kom Ombo is a temple complex for two deities, Horus the Falcon and Sobek the Crocodile. The mummified holy crocodiles are stored in a special chamber. Indeed, cemeteries have been discovered that contain thousands of mummified dogs, cats, baboons and crocodiles. While walking from chamber to chamber it's like travelling back in time for thousands of years. The journey on the Nile leads to the archaeological excavation site of Philae, on the island of Agilika. This island, with its fantastic temple complexes, was once the pearl of Egypt. The stone witnesses on the river banks stand silently as the boat continues on its journey further into Egypt, an impressive country that has an amazing ancient history and a modern awareness of its glorious past.

The construction of the Aswan Dam meant that the holy island of Philae was under threat from the waters of the Nile. However, due to a major international rescue operation, its temples and numerous buildings were relocated to the island of Gelkia. The great Isis Temple Of Philae is acknowledged as one of the most well preserved Egyptian holy places dating from Ptolemaic times and some of its foundations are believed to derive from far older religious buildings. Next to the smaller Hathor Temple, fourteen magnificent columns and capitals rise majestically into the sky. The 'Nilometer' was reassembled on Gelkia. This device was the official measurement system for Egyptian taxes. Thus, the level of taxes was closely associated with the water level of the Nile. GTR-DVD-1024 - Thebes is the legendary necropolis on the Nile's western shore. Two impressive 18m high Colossus Of Memnos watch over the entrance. It is here that The Valley of the Kings is located. Apart from the Pyramids of Gizeh, this is the most famous location in Egypt.More than 60 graves have been discovered in the necropolis including that of the great king, Ramses I. The first Egyptian ruler, Thutmosis I, was buried in the Valley Of The Kings. Prior to this, Amanophis I had prepared a secret grave in nearby rocks. In addition to the royal burial places, more then 500 private graves of priests, aristocrats and civil servants that date back from between the 11th and 26th Dynasties, have also been discovered here. In contrast to the royal graves, the portrayals and hieroglyphics that are contained in the burial places of the middle classes contain worldly objects. The everyday life of ancient Egypt is illustrated in exquisite detail. In ancient times it was believed that the addition of hieroglyphics on tomb walls and artistically designed reliefs comforted the dead on their journey through the underworld. Close by is the Valley of the Queens where over 70 tombs have been discovered. Apart from royal queens, numerous dead princes were also buried in this part of the necropolis, such as the son of Ramses III. The work of the archaeologists has not yet been completed on this site and so it is quite likely that this scared place will one day reveal more of its splendid and mysterious treasures. After the cathedrals of Rome, Milan and London, that of Santa Maria Del Fiore is the fourth largest in the Christian world. Over the northern gate is a relief that is a masterpiece of Early Renaissance relief work. The 3-sided cathedral was designed to symbolise a Latin crucifix. The main body of the cathedral is 153 metres long and 23 metres tall but in comparison with its huge dimensions, its interior is somewhat bare. In the adjoining Cathedral Museum there is a fascinating collection of pulpits that were designed for special occasions by the most prominent artists of the day. The Firenze Academy has altered the face of European culture and at the beginning of the 15th century the young Cosimo De Medici became a follower of PLATON`S doctrine and philosophy. 463 steps within the Academy's two-tiered dome lead to a superb view that extends over the length and breadth of the old city. With its impressive 107 metre high dome, the Battistero is a stunning building and its Laterna, that was completed in 1572, is a masterpiece created by Brunellechi. The Piazza San Giovanni exudes a powerful ambience and even today it is still possible to feel the remarkable artistry of its historic past. GTR-DVD-1075 - Around 2900 B.C., when Upper and Lower Egypt became one Great Empire, the Pharaohs declared Memphis, which lies in the southern Nile Delta, as their capital city. During its golden years in the second millennium B.C., Memphis extended 15 km, from Gizeh to Sakkara. Up until the time of the Roman Empire, this ancient city's former buildings had been constructed from air-dried bricks and therefore, due to this process, sadly did not survive the years. Granite and limestone were used solely for its Temples, Palaces And Statues. The frightening and dismissive gesture of the Sphinx was meant to frighten away grave robbers and guard the Necropolis, the place of the dead. Its lion's body and human head symbolize courage and mental prowess. Apart from Gizeh, Sakkara, in Lower Egypt, was an important city dedicated to the dead. The mother of all pyramids lies here, Pharaoh Djoser's Step Pyramid, which dates back to the year 2600 B.C. GTR-DVD-1127 - Today, the Egyptian city of Kom Ombo has approximately 70,000 inhabitants. Its outstanding double temple has made it famous throughout the world. Today, the mummified remains of ancient Nile crocodiles are displayed within a chapel that was once dedicated to the goddess, Hathor. These great reptiles were worshipped as sacred animals. One half of the double temple belonged to the crocodile-headed deity, Sobek, the son of Hathor. Today's Kom Ombo Temple was divided into two asymmetric parts by its Ptolemaic builders. Within the right section of the building, Sobek was worshipped, while the left half was dedicated to Haroeris. The external surrounding wall of the temple contains several strange pictures and reliefs including portrayals of early medical instruments. A kind of medicine cupboard was carved into the stone. It shows highly developed medical implements, among them a variety of surgical instruments and even forceps. The profession of doctor was popular and widespread throughout ancient Egypt. However, the Gods were also called upon as soon as there was illness as it was believed that medicine alone could not provide a cure. Images of numerous Egyptian rulers adorn the walls. Queen Cleopatra, the legendary last Ptolemaic sovereign, was also immortalized here. Outside the temple there is a "Birth House" next to the small Hathor Chapel. The Mammisi contains the remarkable portrayal of a nursing mother. During the Ptolemaic period each temple contained a Mammisi that was decorated with portrayals and hieroglyphs. Here, the birth of the children of the gods was celebrated. Due to the ancient relics and the double temple of Kom Ombo we have been able to gain an even greater understanding of Egypt's fascinating past. In 1902 the first dam on the Nile was completed by the British. The Soviet Union sponsored the construction of an even larger dam. GTR-DVD-1080 - Due to its remote location close to today's Sudanese border in Southern Egypt, Abu Simbel was unknown until 1813 when only the heads of the temple's colossal statues were visible above the sand. The breathtaking impression of its exterior also extends within where a magnificent hall with two rows of column-like statues leads into the depths of the temple. Abu Simbel is famous for its precise orientation toward the sun. Twice a year, the first rays of the morning sun shine down the entire length of the temple chamber and illuminate the rear wall of its innermost shrine. Various portrayals and descriptions of Egyptian gods can be found throughout, many of them portrayed with animal heads, such as hawks. Due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam, Abu Simbel has been relocated from its original position on the banks of the Nile. Thanks to an international effort by UNESCO, and at a cost of 42 million dollars, the surface of the hill and the inner chambers were sectioned and reconstructed 64m higher up the valley, inside a concrete dome. The smaller Hathor Temple, dedicated to the wife of Ramses II, Princess Nefertari, was also saved in this way. Today, the great temples of Abu Simbel rise once again in all their former glory.
