OTT-DVD-105 - A cruise on the Nile in the wake of the ancient Egyptians, an adventure into the world of the Pharaohs and the exploration of their mammoth culture. A three-kilometre avenue of sphinxes leads from Luxor to Karnak. Built during the reigns of Ramses the 2nd and Amenophis the 3rd, this impressive avenue was dedicated to three gods of Thebes. The façade of the 260 metre long temple is decorated with six huge statues of Ramses. At night, the temple complex has an air of mystique. and light casts ghostly shadows all around as fearsome monuments gaze into infinity. At its zenith, a million people inhabited Thebes. The necropolis covers 25 km² and the graves of 64 kings, queens and those in High Office have been discovered there. With the exception of Amenophis, each of the pharaohs of the new realm was buried in the necropolis, as well as the legendary, Tutanchamun. Edfu with its tower, outer walls, buildings and halls is still in almost perfect condition and at its entrance royal falcons carved from granite stand guard. Its walls are an authentic history book of Egyptian myth and legend. The Egyptian gods are everywhere as impressive statues, fragile carvings and paintings. Kom Ombo is a temple complex for two deities, Horus the Falcon and Sobek the Crocodile. The mummified holy crocodiles are stored in a special chamber. Indeed, cemeteries have been discovered that contain thousands of mummified dogs, cats, baboons and crocodiles. While walking from chamber to chamber it's like travelling back in time for thousands of years. The journey on the Nile leads to the archaeological excavation site of Philae, on the island of Agilika. This island, with its fantastic temple complexes, was once the pearl of Egypt. The stone witnesses on the river banks stand silently as the boat continues on its journey further into Egypt, an impressive country that has an amazing ancient history and a modern awareness of its glorious past.

The Hadrian Gate was built in the second century A.D. and highlights the glorious past of this once important trading metropolis in the Near East. The subterranean Hypogaum Of The Three Brothers contains almost four hundred burial corridors and numerous artistic sculptures and frescos. From the seventh century A.D. the magnificent trading metropolis gradually fell into decline and was almost completely wiped from the map. GTR-DVD-1024 - Thebes is the legendary necropolis on the Nile's western shore. Two impressive 18m high Colossus Of Memnos watch over the entrance. It is here that The Valley of the Kings is located. Apart from the Pyramids of Gizeh, this is the most famous location in Egypt.More than 60 graves have been discovered in the necropolis including that of the great king, Ramses I. The first Egyptian ruler, Thutmosis I, was buried in the Valley Of The Kings. Prior to this, Amanophis I had prepared a secret grave in nearby rocks. In addition to the royal burial places, more then 500 private graves of priests, aristocrats and civil servants that date back from between the 11th and 26th Dynasties, have also been discovered here. In contrast to the royal graves, the portrayals and hieroglyphics that are contained in the burial places of the middle classes contain worldly objects. The everyday life of ancient Egypt is illustrated in exquisite detail. In ancient times it was believed that the addition of hieroglyphics on tomb walls and artistically designed reliefs comforted the dead on their journey through the underworld. Close by is the Valley of the Queens where over 70 tombs have been discovered. Apart from royal queens, numerous dead princes were also buried in this part of the necropolis, such as the son of Ramses III. The work of the archaeologists has not yet been completed on this site and so it is quite likely that this scared place will one day reveal more of its splendid and mysterious treasures. GTR-DVD-1033 - Necropolis of the Ming Dynasty - A dignified pavilion rises behind the main entrance of the magnificent Ming Necropolis, which is located 50km north west of Beijing. Seven kilometres long, the holy avenue of the Ming Necropolis is lined with numerous beautiful stone figures.Ding Ling, the mausoleum of the 13th Ming Emperor, Wanli, is one of three restored grave sites where elegant stairs, decorated with beautiful stone masonry, lead up to the terrestrial section of the mausoleum. According to ancient Chinese tradition, an earthly section had to be built for the soul of the dead, in which the soul would be comforted. For this reason, the magnificent buildings and great halls were designed in the style of the emperor's palace. The expenditure for the royal funerals was without limit and it took almost six years and around 30,000 workers to build the grave complex for Emperor Wanli. Chang Ling is the largest mausoleum of the Necropolis and was built for Emperor Yongle who reigned during the beginning of the 15th century. But this extremely well restored grave site has a darker side to it: together with the Emperor, it is believed that sixteen living concubines were buried in this grave. GTR-DVD-1075 - Around 2900 B.C., when Upper and Lower Egypt became one Great Empire, the Pharaohs declared Memphis, which lies in the southern Nile Delta, as their capital city. During its golden years in the second millennium B.C., Memphis extended 15 km, from Gizeh to Sakkara. Up until the time of the Roman Empire, this ancient city's former buildings had been constructed from air-dried bricks and therefore, due to this process, sadly did not survive the years. Granite and limestone were used solely for its Temples, Palaces And Statues. The frightening and dismissive gesture of the Sphinx was meant to frighten away grave robbers and guard the Necropolis, the place of the dead. Its lion's body and human head symbolize courage and mental prowess. Apart from Gizeh, Sakkara, in Lower Egypt, was an important city dedicated to the dead. This monumental building was designed to accommodate 105,000 believers and its tall minaret dominates the city's skyline. More than twelve million people helped finance this 'Eighth Wonder Of The World' which involved 90 engineers and 30,000 craftsmen and artists. Lying northwards along the Atlantic coast, is Rabat, Morocco's capital and home to its government and royal family. The King's Palace, the Palais Royal, is a town in itself. Surrounded by walls and protected by royal guards, since 1864 it has been the main residence of the Alaouite Dynasty which has been in power since 1666. To the south of RABAT lies Chellah, City of the Dead. The Merinde necropolis has a square tower and is surrounded by a wall made of crushed loam, proof that the Cathagers built a trading centre here in the 3rd century B.C. Amongst the tombs, the sarcophagus of Sultan Abou El-Hassan stands proud with its artistic engravings. Fez El-Bali dates back to the Middle Ages and contains narrow streets, a pungent mixture of scents, the penetrating sound of craftsmen and fine examples of the Moorish art of building.
