VPG-DVD-148 - VILLE DE QUÉBEC On behalf of the French crown, in 1608 Samuel De Champlain established a fur trading post from which originated Québec, a city that today looms over the Saint Laurence River like a majestic fortress. It is the birthplace of French culture in North America. With its small towers and green glimmering roofs the Chateau Frontenac majestically watches over the city. The castle like hotel was built and lavishly furnished in 1894 by the Canadian Pacific Railway and in 1943 was the rendezvous for the allies who met to prepare for the Normandy Landings. Québec's upper city is encircled by a four kilometre long fortified wall that was alternately built upon by the French and the English. In former times, various gates barred entry to the fortress but today they are wide open and welcome visitors into the well preserved old town. Designed by master builder Baillairgè in 1844, La Cathedrale Notre Dame De Québec was Canada's first Catholic cathedral. The Baroque dome of the basilica demonstrates the splendour of Catholic Church design while the altar captivates with its rich detail and paintings of the Holy Mother. The Funiculaire connects the upper city with the lower, the Quartier Petit Champlaine that was the country's first settlement. The train station looks like a mediaeval castle and its large hall seems to be the grand entrance chamber of a palace. The station's anterooms contain huge windows while its ceilings display colourful glass images. Canada's oldest city has successfully retained its deep and historic roots and has sensitively linked them to the needs of the modern world. Québec is truly a sparkling gem of French culture in North America.

VPG-DVD-169 - PROVENCE Marseille is the most important city in Provence.and is situated on the south coast of France. From a distance, one of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour: the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. With abundant internal furnishings, Byzantine arches, golden mosaics and numerous votives it is a splendid structure inspired by Byzantine Romanic design. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the 5th century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe, Les Calanques, a unique nature reserve where shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Sur Le Pont D'Avignon is a world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge, as that is the location of its bars! A place of radiant light and sweet aromas with villages that nestle in the rocks like eagles'nests and with cities that have an historic past. Provence is indeed a captivating land full of fascinating contrasts.

VPG-DVD-132 - PARIS Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. First established by the Celts, next used strategically by the Romans, then it served the extravagant lifestyle of the Sun King, Louis the Fourteenth until it became a hotbed of Revolution. Les Champs Elysees is surely one of the most beautiful avenues in the world. With wide boulevards, shady corners, ambient street cafes and classic Parisian buildings that are decorated with flowers. Since 1873, the Palais De L`Elysee has been the residence of the French President. At the beginning of the 17th century, Madame De Pompadour lived there and during the Revolution the liberated people cavorted in its luxurious rooms. Through a small triumphal arch decorated with scenes of Napoleon's victorious army, there is the garden created by Leotre, the Jardin Des Tuileries. A bridge and a fountain are the focal points of this popular park created in typical French style. A modern glass pyramid and a fountain decorate the courtyard of the former Louvre Palace, which since the time of the Revolution has been transformed into a museum that contains the famous Louvre art gallery. Its collection of remarkable historic treasures and superb art collection make it one of the world's most famous museums. with Leonardo Da Vinci´s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, taking pride of place. Situated on a small island on the River Seine is the Cathedral Of Notre Dame, the 'Mother Church Of The Nation'. Built on the foundations of a Roman temple and commissioned by the bishops Maurice and Eudes De Sully, it took almost 200 years to build this Gothic masterpiece. Built at the end of the 19th century as a symbol of national revival, Montmartre's Sacre Coeur has the appearance of a white, fairy-tale palace with 237 steps that lead up to the main entrance of this extraordinary structure. Its Byzantine architecture and five cupolas are reminiscent of the Marcus Dome in Venice. Of course, there are the dizzy heights of the Eiffel Tower and a great deal more. Paris is a wonderful festival of the senses!

VPG-DVD-163 - MARSEILLE Marseille is the oldest city in France and its largest commercial harbour in the Mediterranean. It is believed that in 600 B.C. travellers from the Greek town of Phokis founded the autonomous town of 'Massalia'. In the Middle Ages the city's main harbour was used by the crusaders to embark on their journey to Jerusalem and it rivalled those of the maritime republics of Genoa, Pisa and Venice. One of Marseille's main landmarks rises high above the harbour, the seafarers' church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Garde. It towers above the city like a fortress and on its bell tower is a gilded ten metre high figure of the Virgin Mary. Several hundred yachts of all sizes crowd into the old harbour where there is often little room for the comings and goings of modern day sailors. It is difficult to imagine that once near-starving slaves were forced to use their last ounce of strength to row their master's galleys into the harbour. Modern harbour complexes require a great deal of space as is well demonstrated by Marseille's new harbour and after Rotterdam it is the second largest in Europe. Two mighty fortresses overlook the harbour: the northern Fort Saint-Jean is the oldest and was used by the Order Of The Knights Of Malta; the Fort Saint Nicolas stands guard over the southern side of the narrow harbour entrance and was built in the 17th century. The tiny island of Chateau D`If was made famous due to a novel by Alexander Dumas, The Count Of Monte Christo. A small museum features many items related to this classic novel and visitors can search for the hole in the wall through which Edmond Dantès is said to have entered the Abbé Faria. A boat trip from Cassis leads to one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Europe: Les Calanques a unique nature reserve. Shining white limestone cliffs plunge more than four hundred metres into the deep blue sea and extend for twenty kilometres. Marseille - France's wonderful gateway to Africa!

NPM-DVD-123 - Nature Parks CAMARGUE Provence, FranceNowhere else are both countryside and waterscapes more attractive. In France, amongst the spacious tributaries of the Rhone is the romantic region of the Camargue. Once considered as hostile terrain, today this swampy area is becoming increasingly popular, which is not surprising with the large variety of impressive locations that this fascinating region has to offer and the region's traditional white horses that are famous throughout the world. Bright fields of sunflowers are everywhere yet the Camargue is more well known for its cultivation of rice. In the high season of the summer months, of which the inhabitants of the small town of Saintes-Maries-De-La-Mer numbers around a thousand, the population increases ten fold. The fortified exterior of the pilgrimage church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Mer that was built on the site of an early Christian chapel is a reminder of this region's dramatic past. Legend has it that its beach was the starting point for the subsequent spread of Christianity in Provence. In addition to its significance as a place of pilgrimage, life in the village centres around the Camargue bulls and it even contains a bullring! Just as with Provence the beauty of the Camargue has attracted numerous famous painters and artists who were inspired by the wild tranquillity of this area and the landscape itself is like a painting when suddenly a collection of water lilies can bring to mind a famous impressionistic painting by Monet. The region's outstandingly beautiful and harmonious combination of water, air and earth is unique in Europe. The French poet, Daudet, was absolutely right when he described the Camargue as the 'most beautiful swamp in the world!'

The Cathedrale Anglicane symbolises the English period of occupation. The Anglican Bishop's cathedral was inaugurated in the year 1804 and bears a strong resemblance to Saint Martin-In-The-Fields, in London. At the Place Royale, Québec's birthplace, is the tiny church of Notre Dame Des Victoires and it was here that the early settlers worshipped with models of their ships that were later suspended by rope above the pews. Québec is truly a sparkling gem of French culture in North America. GTR-DVD-1057 - Versailles was the former palace and dream castle of the French 'Sun King', Louis the Fourteenth. The history of Versailles covers the rise and fall of the Bourbons whose reign covered the most remarkable period of French history. Here, the French king lavishly entertained the decadent nobility, oblivious to the unrest caused by their false pride, supreme arrogance and almost total disregard for the poverty of the French people that would eventually lead to Revolution.Magnificent fountains decorate the palace's huge park that was created by 35,000 workers, a hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths that seem to be without end. Drawn by four horses, the god Apollo emerges from the waters of a fountain. This and further fountains and ponds were designed by Tuby and Lenotre, and are masterpieces of both garden design and the sculptor`s art. Playful figures and statues adorn the park's many paths and even today emanate the joy and merriment of past days. Construction of the royal palace was completed some time after that of the gardens. The palace was to be the epitome of majestic splendour and was designed to accommodate the entire French Court: 20,000 people! Containing more than 700 lavish rooms, the palace is a unique architectural masterpiece. In the opulence of the private rooms there are grand four-poster beds and splendid canopies. Ceiling paintings, gold and marble intarsia, carvings, goblins and superb crystal chandeliers are an indication of some of the king's creative ideas that Lebrun realised in exemplary style. Versailles served as the model for several European palaces such as those in Potsdam, Vienna and St. Petersburg. However, it continues to be a unique monument of unashamed splendour and supreme opulence. GTR-DVD-1017 - PARIS - Vieux Ville, France The history of the Louvre Palace dates back to 1200 A.D. when Philipp August built a fortress close to the river. Today, a modern glass pyramid decorates the courtyard of the former royal residence which, since the time of the Revolution, has been transformed into a museum that also contains one of the world's most famous art galleries. In 1670, Louis the Fourteenth founded the Hotel Des Invalides, a unique charity for soldiers that had been wounded during battle and a home for those who had previously been forced to live as beggars. The adjoining domed Cathedral of the Invalids is a masterpiece of Baroque Classicism and it contains the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte. The Cathedral Of Notre Dame, a Gothic masterpiece, that is also referred to as the 'Mother Church of the Nation', was built on the foundations of a Roman temple and took almost 200 years to build. Kings, monsters and grotesque figures populate its façades, and bizarre gargoyle-like creatures peer down from above. This is where the kings and queens of France were crowned and where Napoleon crowned himself! Built at the end of the 19th century as a symbol of national revival, Montmartre's Sacre Coeur has the appearance of a white, fairy-tale palace and boasts 237 steps that lead up to its main entrance. Similar to the Marcus Cathedral in Venice and the Saint Front in southwest France, it was built in Byzantine style with 5 domes. Its interior is richly decorated throughout with reliefs, paintings and mosaics that are overshadowed by its exquisite architecture. This is still one of the world's most beautiful cities. First discovered by the Celts, then used strategically by the Romans, Paris is a city of passion and history that contains more than its fair share of irresistible charm! GTR-DVD-1196 - It is believed that the origin of the richly decorated Episcopal cathedral of Notre Dame dates back to the time of Bishop Maurice De Sully in 1163. But the majority of the cathedral's present day architecture with its strange and fantastic creatures of ancient mythology, such as the chimeras, was designed in the 19th century. The church owes much of its fame to the famous French author, Victor Hugo and his book The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, a great classic of French literature. The stone chimeras are reminiscent of the book's main character, Quasimodo. The remarkable and beautifully designed rose windows in the transept are particularly noteworthy as each is original and dates back to 1270 A.D. In 1804 Napoléon Bonaparte was crowned emperor in Notre Dame by Pope Pius The Seventh on this famous island on the River Seine, the Ile De La Cité. For the French nation the historic importance of this impressive monument is inestimable.
