OTT-DVD-123 - The Shan State Express is the sonorous name of a unique train that travels to the north of Myanmar and to the legendary kingdom of the Shan. It passes through some of the most splendid scenery in South East Asia. We begin in the famous city of Mandalay that has a population of around a million and is a centre of Burmese art. Mandalay was founded around one hundred and fifty years ago and is therefore a relatively young metropolis. It owes its existence to an outstanding monarch, King Mindon who, wishing to escape from his kingdom's turbulent past, had a brand new royal city built. The journey on the Shan State Express begins early in the morning in Mandalay Train Station. Immediately after leaving the city we encounter wonderful scenery that is strongly influenced by a remarkable backdrop of mountains and unspoiled Nature. The railroad travels in a zigzag up the mountains which enables it to negotiate severe slopes that would otherwise be impossible for it to climb vertically. With the arrival of the railroad an increasing number of small farming villages developed most of which were populated by the Shan. Accounting for around eight point five per cent of the total population, the Shan are the largest ethnic minority in Myanmar. Their culture has been a major contribution to the historical development of South East Asia. At numerous railway stations Westerners are sometimes a little wary of the various snacks on offer. When a tempting skewer of food suddenly turns out to be a grilled locust the appetite can sometimes disappear within seconds! The continuing journey on the Shan State Express travels once more into the countryside. Picturesque hills line the route that is close to a famous militarily name, the Burma Road. The Shan State is truly one of the most colourful areas in South East Asia. Due to the extended train route from Mandalay to Lashio the time is hopefully not far away when the poverty of this region will be replaced by a new era of well deserved prosperity.

NPM-DVD-132 - Those who live on Easter Island call it, Rapa Nui. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the island is located on the eastern point of the Polynesian Triangle of which Hawaii and New Zealand make up the other two. Today, Rapa Nui has a population of 3000 that consists of 34 clan families. For two hundred and fifty years a multitude of ethnologists and archaeologists from all over the world have come to discover the secrets of this mysterious island. It contains around six hundred bizarre stone monuments known as 'Moais' that measure between four and ten metres high. The island's large, angry-looking statues have sharp, elongated heads, long, narrow ears, deep-set eyes and thin lips. A large number of the first inhabitants' cruel rituals took place on the island's steep coast. It was there that many were sacrificed in the name of the gods. Ahu Tongariki was the island's largest location for cult ceremonies and its Moais point straight toward the island's volcano. The stone structures that are situated at Orongo, a former place of ritual, are cave-like buildings in which the dead were entombed within small stone chambers known as 'Ahus'. During the 1950's the Norwegian researcher Thor Heyerdahl spent an entire year on Rapa Nui. When first discovered, not one of the figures stood on its original foundation but with the aid of the islanders Heyerdahl managed to re-erect a single Moai. Beginning in 1935 and for the next 30 years, the German pastor, Sebastian Englert, searched the island for its secrets. Today, his discoveries are on display in a museum and one of the finds, a skull, has been expertly reconstructed and now reveals the appearance of one of the island's original inhabitants. Over the years none of the island's simple appeal and fascinating mystique has faded and Easter Island is one of the largest cultural and natural treasures in the world and a much-prized heritage of civilisation.

RIH-DVD-CAMB - Images Of CambodiaCambodia 's classical dancers is highly stylized, and in this video I have made it the backdrop to some wonderful pictures of the Angkor Wat images. Over 300 temples were built between the 9th and 13th centuries to glorify a succession of Khmer kings. Most of Angkor was abandoned in the 15th century, and effort is continuing by other governments and non-governmental organizations to restore many of the temples and structures.

GTR-DVD-1207 - Since 1981 the Baroque castle of Drottningholm, situated twelve kilometres from Stockholm, has been the official residence of the Swedish royal family. Within the beautiful Drottningholm Park is an exceptional architectural jewel, Kina Slott, a picturesque Chinese pleasure palace that is one of the most captivating examples of the exotic world of the Far East as visualised by Sweden's former aristocracy. After the Swedish East India Company first arrived in China in 1733 everything Chinese was highly fashionable. In each corner of Europe numerous buildings were suddenly inspired by Chinese art and architecture thus many tea-houses, pavilions and tiny pleasure palaces became in vogue. The pavilion still contains several valuable silk wallpapers, lacquered umbrellas and other exotic examples. An exquisite collection of Chinese porcelain is one of the most celebrated exhibits as porcelain played a vital role in the dining hall where food arrived in quite spectacular manner - the table rose up directly from the kitchen! Considering such ingenuity it is understandable that Kina Slott continues to enjoy much popularity right up to the present day. GTR-DVD-1216 - Sukhothai, 'Dawn Of Happiness', this, the name of the first capital of Thailand, once marked the beginning of a new epoch. During the course of its one hundred and twenty year flowering period several of the city's impressive buildings were created such as the magnificent Wat Mahathat Temple. Beyond the old city walls is the fascinating Wat Si Chum Temple which owes its national fame to the huge seated Buddha sculpture of Phra Atchana that is more than eleven metres high and is one of the largest and most imposing Buddha statues in Thailand. Picturesque yet almost sad the century old ruins seem to be reflected within the water of the nearby moats, canals and ponds yearning for a bygone time when the area was full of buildings that in turn were full of life. But despite its continuing decay Sukhothai is still a truly magical experience. GTR-DVD-1040 - Around 3,500 kilometres west of the mainland of Chile is the Pacific island of Rapa Nui, otherwise known as Easter Island. Three million years ago volcanic activity created this small island of lava that covers an area of a hundred and sixty square kilometres.Rapa Nui is one of the most remote places on Earth and its closest neighbour is Pitcairn Island more than two thousand kilometres west. Since its discovery by Dutch sailors on Easter Sunday, 1722, there has been a great deal of interest in the island. In spite of its growing tourist trade the island has retained an air of tranquillity and is ideal for nature lovers and those interested in its history. Theories abound as to who were the first settlers to arrive on this tiny island but scientists believe that its first inhabitants originated from Eastern Polynesia. But the island's main focal point are its gigantic and mysterious stone monuments that date back to late pre-historic times. These mighty statues have always stimulated a certain amount of fantasy as the island was thought to be part of a lost continent. Nearly all the mighty figures, known as Moai, originated from the slopes of the Rano Raraku Volcano. Its Tuff stone was an ideal sculpting material and its soft texture made it possible for the islanders to create tall, massive statues out of the rock within only a few weeks. There are still almost four hundred individually crafted Moai figures on the island. During the 19th century slave traders arrived and took with them thousands of the island's inhabitants. Those that were left of the island's religious leaders took their knowledge of the island and its culture to their graves. Thus the exact meaning of the intriguing, giant Megalithic sculptures will remain an unsolved mystery for the rest of time.
