VPG-DVD-231 - VIENTIANE Since the sixteenth century Vientiane has been the capital of Laos and is situated in the heart of Indochina. The city originated at the point at which the first navigable section of the Mekong River joins with the Gulf Of Thailand. Vientiane was once a group of rural settlements and even today contains several village-like districts each with its own temple and traditional marketplace. At the end of the nineteenth century the French began to renovate the city's most important buildings and made Vientiane the administrative capital of their new colony and gave it a French look. There are some fascinating places to visit outside the city such as the Cultural Park Of The Laotian People, a large area on the banks of the Mekong River. Historic Vientiane also has some fine reconstructed buildings such as the Wat Impeng on the western bank of Pagoda Street. Artistic wooden carvings on the windows and doors, along with the paintings and stucco work on the walls, feature various legends from the life of Buddha. Some signs of affluence are beginning to appear and in future years Vientiane may become yet another Asian metropolis with skyscrapers, smog and manic rush hours. It is now poised to leap into contemporary times as it gradually emerges from its atmospheric curtain of bamboo.

VPG-DVD-101 - NEW ORLEANS Fun-filled metropolis at the mouth of the Mississippi, New Orleans is a cultural melting pot and the birth place of jazz. In 1682, the Frenchman, Robert Cavalier, declared this Mississippi region to be French territory and named it, 'La Louisiana'. However, Napoleon later accepted $15,000,000 from President Jefferson and in 1840 it was the fourth largest city in the USA. The Garden District is a sought-after residential area in which there is an abundance of magnolia trees, palms, shrubs and flowers, and the city's largest graveyard, the Metairie Cemetery, has over 7,000 graves and an array of spectacular mausoleums which astound the eye. Gumbo Soup, Jambalaya, Hurricane Cocktails and Dixie Beer are just a few of the traditional refreshments on offer in this carefree, non-stop city, yet, just outside, there are the swampy bayous alive with many exotic species, and the Oak Valley Plantations whose great wealth derived from the sugar cane industry prior to the American Civil War and part of which is reminiscent of some of the scenery from Hollywood's, Gone With The Wind. In the 19th Century, New Orleans was North American capital of the Voodoo cult and today it is a city of unique atmospheres, flavours, contrasts and Mardi Gras: an extraordinary city!

VPG-DVD-123 - NEPAL At the foot of the huge peaks of the Himalayas is Pokhara and it is from here that we begin our journey through Nepal. At one time this high valley contained seven fresh water lakes named Pokhari and they gave this holiday paradise its present day name. In the past, Pokhara was an important trading link between India and Tibet but the trading of salt and wool came to an end after Tibet closed its doors to the outside world. Its population is extremely tolerant and both the Buddhist and Hindu faiths coexist side by side. A safari by elephant is a real adventure as the mahuts skilfully lead the ambling giants through the bush. Travelling through the jungle on the back of an elephant offers good protection from rhinoceroses and other predators. Kathmandu is a melting pot of both race and religion, a metropolis in the heart of the Kingdom of Nepal. In the centre of the city is the ancient palace of Hanuman Dhoka. More than seven hundred thousand people live in the metropolis of Earth's most ancient kingdom. It was only a few decades ago that ancient Nepal opened up its borders. Until then, due to the command of the ruling Gurkha Dynasty, the 'Home of the Divine' was totally isolated. Patan is Nepal's second largest city and has retained much of its original character due to its three hundred monasteries and temples. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Kathmandu Valley and during the 15th century was the capital of one of three kingdoms. Two huge lions guard the entrance of the former royal palace that originated from a monastery complex. Bhaktapur is the third ancient regal city of the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley that has always been a prosperous trading route between China, Tibet and India. Our journey through this fairytale land ends at the foot of the mighty Himalayas amidst a wonderful world in which the gods are still very much alive!

VPG-DVD-213 - ICELAND Iceland is an island born of fire and ice with white glaciers, black beaches and green meadows: a land of geysers, waterfalls and volcanoes. Reykjavik is set amid a fascinating landscape, a metropolis on the outermost edge of civilisation and the world's northernmost capital city. A little outside the city is an attraction that is a meeting place for one and all, The Blue Lagoon, the largest bath tub in the world! The mineral water it contains has a temperature of forty degrees centigrade and the milky-blue pool has been proven to possess beneficial healing qualities. Southeast of The Blue Lagoon is Hveragerdi that is set within an idyllic valley. Due to its protected location and numerous thermal springs, in 1929 a garden city originated there and within its many greenhouses grow vegetables, fruit and exotic flowers. The small coastal picturesque village of Vik with its few houses and around three hundred inhabitants is located in a valley close to a bay. The mystical looking rocks seem to protect this place that has the most rainfall in what is an already rainy region and above which the rain clouds are often alive with both thunder and lightning. Iceland is a fascinating world of water, fire and ice and full of breathtaking beauty and overwhelming contrast. It is one of the last natural paradises on Earth.

VPG-DVD-228 - DAMASCUS Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad. Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

TMT-DVD-114 - ANTELOPE CANYON Located in the North American state of Arizona, Antelope Canyon is an amazing kaleidoscope of natural rock formations that not only contain a bewitching spectrum of blazing colour but also an array of shapes and dimensions that are truly awe-inspiring, mind boggling and...'unreal'! The rocks were formed by the petrified remains of prehistoric sand dunes during the time that the region was covered by the sea. Not just from the outside but from within, Antelope Canyon is a visual treat at every turn and even the most down to earth souls must suddenly feel a sense of creative inspiration with each blink of the eye. It is as though a giant sculptor has mixed the earth up in a great melting pot, added every imaginable colour and hue to his incredible creation and then invited the world to view it so that they could attempt to fathom how such an overwhelming and natural miracle came to be.

RIH-DVD-PERU - Peruvian HighlandsWith Crooked Trails Tours, I visited two Peruvian Andean villages of Vicos and Humacchuco. We lived and worked with these villagers who have had little interaction with outsiders. They have maintained their traditional customs and their language, Quechua. We helped them dig up their potatoes and tubers for a community feast called Panchamama, or mother earth feast.

OTT-DVD-109 - On Tour... LIJIANG RIVER CRUISE LIJIANG RIVER CRUISE Jagdi, in the south of China, is the starting point for a journey on the Lijiang River. Like a green silk ribbon, the river winds eighty-three kilometres through lush countryside from which unusual cone-shaped mountains suddenly appear from the plains. The view scans across to Pagoda Mountain, lingers for a moment on Hole Mountain, and then moves across to Picture Mountain. Without warning, the vase-shaped cliffs and green rocks of the radiant Lotus Summit come into view. In the foreground, there are light green rice fields, extensive bamboo groves and lush orange plantations. During their lunch break, women sit at their noisy sewing machines while the men enjoy smoking their pipes. An idyllic, picturesque landscape in which the hands of time tick slowly by. Finally, Yangshou, in which numerous takeaways tempt with exotic delicacies and where, outside each establishment, pots and cages indicate what's on the menu! In spite of their arduous rural life, the local people are happy and contented, a feeling also experienced by those who visit this amazing region.

OTT-DVD-117 - On Tour... CIRCUMETNEA RAILROAD SICILIA Mount Etna's "VolcaFERROVIA CIRCUMETNEA Catania is the end of the line for a small railroad that encircles Mount Etna, the Ferrovia Circumetnea. In the heart of Catania various remnants that date back to Roman times indicate the glorious past of the second largest city in Sicily although its origins are far older. The journey around Mount Etna begins in the small and unspectacular station of the privately owned Ferrovia Circumetnea narrow gauge railway. The railroad once travelled to Catania's harbour and today the line ends in the middle of the city. However, the simplicity of this railroad belies the fact that a journey along it is an absolute must! A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. The history of the railroad around Mount Etna began at the end of the nineteenth century when it was important that Sicily's remote cities had ready access to the seaport of Catania.. The journey on the Ferrovia Circumetnea travels through some exceptionally beautiful scenery that contains a number of picturesque farms. The land owes its fertility to Mount Etna as, despite its destructive force, the fertile volcanic ground is ideal for agriculture. Large quantities of carbon dioxide are constantly emitted from Etna's crater. However, the crater's white smoke is normally quite harmless. Even though the volcano is active throughout the year eruptions are still relatively rare and the last large eruption was in 2002. Just like a good wine a ride on the Ferrovia Circumetnea improves with age. This must be the most atmospheric way in which to discover the remarkable Mount Etna!

NPM-DVD-130 - Five hundred kilometres from Cape Town the surroundings of Knysna have for many years been the main tourist centre of this unique region, a breathtaking coastline, picturesque rivers and untouched forests which have given this magnificent area a unique and unforgettable charm. The Wilderness National Park begins just outside the village of Wilderness, west of Knysna. Because of its two thousand six hundred hectares the park has become an important refuge for many varieties of bird that are threatened by extinction. Located between the Indian Ocean and the Outeniqua Mountains it is an ideal refuge for two hundred and fifty different kinds of birds and small animals. The extraordinary beauty of Knysna Bay has many vantage points. Its eighteen square kilometre lagoon looks like a fantastic lake and the bay's most striking landmark is two mountains that rise up from the sea, the Heads Of Knysna which look like two gigantic stone heads and are the gateway into the lagoon. The Heads Of Knysna are responsible for the fact that over millions of years a biotope was gradually created here that is unique throughout South Africa. In this coastal area there is much vegetation and sclerophyllous plants and these rich natural treasures would alone be good enough reason to visit the Knysna region. The landscape on the section between George and Knysna is one of the finest in South Africa. The long railway bridge that spans the lagoon is a famous architectural landmark of this region and after two and a half hours the trains of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe arrive at Knysna Station. In Knysna it is possible to continue the journey by way of the many excursion boats and ferries that, when the weather is good, travel to the Heads and various islands. After having experienced the many wonderful natural sights of this magnificent region it is easy to understand why so many refer to it as, The Garden Of Eden, because, like paradise, there is no finer 'garden' than that of South Africa's Knysna!

NPM-DVD-151 - When viewing the Kalahari from the air it is soon clear that in spite of its arid appearance it does not only consist of desert terrain. Indeed, its extensive and dry savannah is home to a variety of vegetation zones and a surprisingly large number of plants and animals. Covering an incredible two point five million square kilometres the Kalahari extends across more than nine African countries. In the north it borders the Zaire Delta and in the south it stretches between the Atlantic and West Zambia. The largest area of the Kalahari is situated in Botswana, one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. With less than three people per square kilometre it is hardly surprising that it is such an isolated region. Amid the African wilderness we arrive at a luxurious lodge that is surrounded by several beautiful old trees, Deception Valley Lodge. A few years ago the owners of the lodge came to an arrangement with the nearby members of the San tribe that some of them would act as guides for their guests. The Bushmen of the Kalahari have a long and proud history and it is believed that the first settlement of the ancestors of the San was established here around a hundred thousand years ago. The bushmen accompany us on our trip into the desert that is also their home. Nobody knows the mysteries of the desert better than the San tribesmen. For thousands of years their knowledge and experience has been handed down from one generation to the next. Without the knowledge gained from their ancestors it would be impossible to meet the challenge of everyday life in the desert. A walk through the dry savannah provides outsiders with a hint of the tough way of life of the bushmen. The Kalahari is most certainly not just another African desert: it is a very unique world of its own!
