VPG-DVD-123 - NEPAL At the foot of the huge peaks of the Himalayas is Pokhara and it is from here that we begin our journey through Nepal. At one time this high valley contained seven fresh water lakes named Pokhari and they gave this holiday paradise its present day name. In the past, Pokhara was an important trading link between India and Tibet but the trading of salt and wool came to an end after Tibet closed its doors to the outside world. Its population is extremely tolerant and both the Buddhist and Hindu faiths coexist side by side. A safari by elephant is a real adventure as the mahuts skilfully lead the ambling giants through the bush. Travelling through the jungle on the back of an elephant offers good protection from rhinoceroses and other predators. Kathmandu is a melting pot of both race and religion, a metropolis in the heart of the Kingdom of Nepal. In the centre of the city is the ancient palace of Hanuman Dhoka. More than seven hundred thousand people live in the metropolis of Earth's most ancient kingdom. It was only a few decades ago that ancient Nepal opened up its borders. Until then, due to the command of the ruling Gurkha Dynasty, the 'Home of the Divine' was totally isolated. Patan is Nepal's second largest city and has retained much of its original character due to its three hundred monasteries and temples. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Kathmandu Valley and during the 15th century was the capital of one of three kingdoms. Two huge lions guard the entrance of the former royal palace that originated from a monastery complex. Bhaktapur is the third ancient regal city of the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley that has always been a prosperous trading route between China, Tibet and India. Our journey through this fairytale land ends at the foot of the mighty Himalayas amidst a wonderful world in which the gods are still very much alive!

VPG-DVD-198 - GRANADA Since the 7th century B.C., Iberians, Romans and West Goths settled in Granada but it was during Arab rule that the city first gained prominence. Sixty thousand Muslims once lived in the old Moorish city complex on the hill above the ancient district of Albaicin.1 Granada has a truly unique and captivating atmosphere, one that has inspired poets, musicians and countless travellers from all over the world. A lively and contemporary university city and at the same time the guardian of an historic past that draws in a multitude of tourists keen to experience its special charm. In the narrow valleys between the Alhambra and Albaicin Hills the gentle River Darro makes its age-old journey toward the city centre and the houses along the riverside have been restored to a high standard with typical wooden balconies, decorated façades and barred windows. The Banos Arabes are ancient Arab baths that date back to the 11th century. The mighty La Alcazaba Fortress rises up from the top of a hill and is separated from the rest of the Alhambra by huge walls. The city extends to the plains below and in the background are the snow-covered mountain peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The huge Torre De La Vela Watchtower is the highest point of the complex and was the first building of the Nasrides Dynasty. The Alhambra served as a military headquarters, administrative centre and royal residence until the expulsion of the Moors by Christian militia. The interior of the Alhambra is like a hidden treasure that lies expectantly beyond plain red walls, waiting to be discovered. The most famous of the courtyards is the Lion Yard of which the well and ornate arcades took several years to complete. The fiery south of Spain is a fantasy world situated between Europe and Africa. A land of passion and ancient culture: Granada is its shining pearl set amid the evocative landscape of Andalusia.

VPG-DVD-136 - CUBA Basking in the Caribbean sun, the island of Cuba lies between sun and socialism, rumba and revolution. Havana is the capital. In 1553, the Spanish conquerors designated Havana's harbour as a collection point for ships loaded with gold and silver from the new Spanish colonies and named the settlement, San Cristobal De La Habana. La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway`s local and nowhere else is the 'Mojito' mixed better. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi House, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served, one almost expects Fidel Castro to be sitting at the next table. Pinar Del Rio is a small but busy town in which the Red Star and portraits of Che Guevara are on display for all to see. In the old town, colourful houses with beautiful pillared corridors demonstrate the former wealth of the country's independent tobacco growers. A visit to a tobacco factory is a must. Cuba's cigars are world famous. Together with sugar, tobacco is the country's most important export. The oldest geological formation in Cuba are the Mogotes, well-weathered limestone peaks that, supported by pillars, once covered a large complex of caves. On seven manmade islands in the centre of the Cienaga De Zapata National Park, is the Indian village of Guama. This swampy nature reserve with its dense mangrove forest vegetation is an ideal sanctuary for many rare water birds. Legend has it that the Siboney Indians sunk all their possessions in the Laguna Del Tesoro to protect their gold from the Spaniards. No Cuban town has changed as little in two hundred years than that of Trinidad. In the 18th century, the city experienced great wealth and recognition due to the cultivation of sugar cane and the luxurious palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city. Rich green tropical forests, tobacco country at the foot of mysterious mountain caves, humid tropical swamps, history, cigars and rum. Cuba is a colourful cocktail.

Past centuries-old farmhouses, mountain peaks tease the sky majestically and whether it's mountain climbing or hiking, the Dolomites offer something for everyone and for motorcars, cyclists and motorbikes, the mountain roads pose a real challenge. Three pinnacles are considered to be the essence of the Dolomites, namely the Western, Large and Small Pinnacle. The view of the three pinnacles is magnificent as Nature manifests itself as the petrified air of high altitude, the fickleness of the wind and the blinding light of eternal snow. Cortina D´Ampezzo is Italy's main alpine resort and visitors from all over the world holiday in this splendid town the centre of which has a good deal of old world charm and where the facades of its chalets and hotels are covered with frescos painted by great artists. OTT-DVD-115 - On Tour... Route Of The White Town Exploring The White Villages of Andelusia RUTA POR LOS PUEBLOS BLANCOS The White Villages located along the Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos shine out of the landscape like a multitude of tiny pearls, an intriguing sight that captures the essence of Spain in the atmospheric simplicity of Andalusia. The Pueblos Blancos are of practical construction. Their thick walls protect against the heat of the sun and they always look new because each year they are treated to a new coat of whitewash. The mighty Castelar De La Frontera was built in the 12th century and the proud old fortress situated above Algeciras can still be admired today. Seventy tightly-packed houses are located within its walls and in 1971 its inhabitants left the Castillo and built a new village on the plains. Today, wooden shutters ensure a degree of privacy and for many centuries thick stone walls protected those who lived here from invasion. The route continues to Jimena De La Frontera where fertile pastures and large slopes with cork oaks and olive trees flank the roads. Ronda enjoys a unique location. It sits on a rock plateau above a steep 165 metre deep canyon. Both the Romans and the Moors, who were defeated by the catholic kings in 1485, left their traces in the city. Due to its location, Ronda was virtually impregnable during the early part of the Middle Ages thus it became one of the last Moorish bastions in Spain. The journey along the edge of the Sierra De Grazalema Nature Park features fertile pastures and lush meadows, overlooked by the peaks of the Penon Grande. The Pueblos look like white spots created by human hand, scattered across a green landscape. To experience the historic flavour of Spain, the Ruta Por Los Pueblos Blancos is well worth traversing!
