VPG-DVD-138 - MONACO Located between Italy and France on the Côte D`Azur, the Principality of Monaco is renowned for its high society, Grand Prix and scandal and the cost of a square metre of land is the most expensive in the world. After the Vatican, it is the smallest yet most unique sovereign state in the world. Monte Carlo's Casino is undoubtedly the principality's most famous landmark. Designed by the architect of the Paris Opera House, Charles Garnier, this superb casino was built in 1878. With the opening of the casino, this previously relatively poor mini State, developed into the famous principality it is today. La Condamine is the harbour district, with its typical French atmosphere and overlooking apartments it connects Monaco Ville with Monte Carlo. Luxury yachts anchor in the harbour throughout the year and travel from all over the world to visit this much sought after tax haven and exclusive casino paradise. On the large rock plateau of Le Roche, Monaco Ville is crowned by its royal palace that was built in 1215 on a former mighty Genoese fortress. The Neo Roman Monaco Cathedral was built in around 1897. The large interior is dominated by the main altar that was designed by Louis Brea. This is also the location of the grave of ex-Hollywood actress, Princess Grace Of Monaco who died tragically in a car accident. Monaco is certainly a place of wealth and prosperity. But the sunshine and its wonderful location on the Côte D`Azur makes it a fascinating place to visit.

GTR-DVD-1080 - Due to its remote location close to today's Sudanese border in Southern Egypt, Abu Simbel was unknown until 1813 when only the heads of the temple's colossal statues were visible above the sand. The breathtaking impression of its exterior also extends within where a magnificent hall with two rows of column-like statues leads into the depths of the temple. Abu Simbel is famous for its precise orientation toward the sun. Twice a year, the first rays of the morning sun shine down the entire length of the temple chamber and illuminate the rear wall of its innermost shrine. Various portrayals and descriptions of Egyptian gods can be found throughout, many of them portrayed with animal heads, such as hawks. Due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam, Abu Simbel has been relocated from its original position on the banks of the Nile. Thanks to an international effort by UNESCO, and at a cost of 42 million dollars, the surface of the hill and the inner chambers were sectioned and reconstructed 64m higher up the valley, inside a concrete dome. The smaller Hathor Temple, dedicated to the wife of Ramses II, Princess Nefertari, was also saved in this way. Today, the great temples of Abu Simbel rise once again in all their former glory. 7DY-DVD-149 - Nevada is the heart of America's west, gateway to a wild and spacious wonderland that is full of amazing surprises and outrageous contradictions.Las Vegas appears like a mirage in the desert, awake night and day, THE entertainment capital of the world! Guarded by a sphinx that stretches its paws out toward the Strip, a pyramid looms above the desert paradise, The Luxor Hotel, one of many theme hotels in this incredible city. The MGM lion guards one of the largest hotels in the world with over five thousand rooms, whereas the Bellagio is a return to the exclusive nature of the casino hotels of the past: here, luxury is at its zenith - an investment of 1,8 billion dollars speaks for itself! The Valley Of Fire is located about 90 km. north east of Las Vegas and derived its name from bizarre, dark red sandstone rocks formed from both wind and rain. Good footpaths lead through the numerous canyons of the 150 million year old rock formations and while climbing over the huge plateaus images come to mind of the Anasazi Indians who once lived here 800 years ago. The fascinating scenery of Red Rock Canyon is easily reached from Las Vegas,a perfect scene of the old Wild West in stark contrast to the glittering world of the nearby city of gambling. A panoramic 20-kilometre roadway leads to the best observation points of this 330 km² nature reserve in the Mojave Desert. Lake Mead is a huge artificial lake amidst breathtaking Nature. The land that encircles it has been declared a National Recreation Area and it's home to a variety of unique plants as well as numerous animals. The authentic, three-deck Mississippi-style paddle steamer, the Desert Princess, is the ideal way to travel the lake in style to the legendary Hoover Dam. Only two and a half hours by car to the west of Las Vegas is the USA's most recent national park that extends to the opposite side of California's border, Death Valley! It was through here that thousands of pioneers took a short cut while journeying west, many of them perishing in the attempt. However, this region is most certainly the heart of the west - the wild wild west of Nevada!

7DY-DVD-109 - Crete is an island of light, the 'cradle of Zeus', with sun-drenched coastlines, picturesque villages and majestic mountains. No wonder that even the gods felt comfortable in this wonderful region of Greece. Heraklion is the capital of the largest and most southerly Greek islands, on which a highly developed culture has existed for 4000 years. The Venetians built massive fortresses to defend the island against the TurksKnossos was the capital of Crete at the time of King Minos, son of the god, Zeus, and the Phoenician princess, Europa. The Knossos Palace was a magnificent building with seven floors and around 1,400 rooms which served as living quarters, administration, storage and for courtly celebration. Most of the ruins are part of the new palace, as the first was built 2000 years before the birth of Christ. The Gortys Ruins are reminders of the moving history of an old town which was prosperous in the 5th century B.C. when Gortys became the most powerful town of the Messara Plain and throughout the olive groves between the hills can be found the scattered remnants of its past cultural riches. With its beautiful sandy beaches, the horseshoe-shaped bay of Matala is a popular coastal resort to which many come simply to experience the glorious sunsets in addition to the rich archaeological revelations of Phaistos Palace. Agia Galini is a quiet fishing village which, during the summer months, is a lively bathing resort on Crete's south coast. However, it has managed to maintain its original atmosphere with fishing boats in the harbour and crystal clear water lapping the shoreline, plus the allure of its tavernas and restaurants. Agia Roumeli is best reached by boat as it is located on a rocky coast toward the Libyan Sea. Fishing villages are few and far between and most activity takes place in the mountains which rise up majestically from the Aegean. Picturesque harbours, ancient treasures, lost legends and Greek hospitality: who could ask for more?
