OTT-DVD-102 - On Tour... AFRICAN BALLOON SAFARI A Bird's Eye View Of AfricaAFRICAN BALLOON SAFARI The hectic pace of contemporary life can turn into a monotonous daily routine which never seems to end but, occasionally, the spirit of adventure comes to the fore, a burning desire to do something a little different. And what better than an airborne African safari in a hot air balloon! As the sun rises above the Earth, unique ever-changing horizons appear as Nature begins to stir and even the trees seem to delight in the dawning of a new day. Civilization appears to be a long way away and, from the airy heights of the balloon, nothing disturbs the balance of nature below. Everything is in perfect harmony as the sun illuminates each detail of the landscape and the balloon allows us to see nature at its most revealing. And soon one forgets various preconceived ideas about Africa: it is not just a land of scorched earth but one of lush green vegetation, an intense green that stamps itself indelibly into the memory. While the balloon's shadow drifts across the African terrain we stare down inquisitively at the ground below, the native inhabitants going about their daily tasks oblivious to our presence, hunting for food and rearing their young as they have done for thousands of years.

NPM-DVD-116 - Nature Parks NAIVASHA KenyaSurrounded by the picturesque mountain range of Mount Longonot and located one thousand nine hundred metres above sea level, is Lake Naivasha, the highest and most beautiful lake in Kenya's Rift Valley. The Lake Naivasha region was made famous by the British painter and conservationist, Joy Adamson, who wrote the novel, Born Free, in the area. The Lake Naivasha Country Club was inaugurated in 1937. It was then called the Lake Hotel and was an important stop on the journey between Durban and London. In what is now the country club's park, passengers once disembarked from flying boats while travelling to Nairobi, situated a hundred kilometres from Lake Naivasha. In addition to great numbers of wild geese, Lake Naivasha is home to many rare and spectacular species of bird such as marabu and cormorant and the pelican also finds much nourishment in the five metre deep lake. Despite their thorny branches the leaves and flowers of the acacia trees on Crescent Island are an important source of nourishment for several animals. The island is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Lake Naivasha and is in full view of the two thousand seven hundred and seventy-six metre high summit of dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. As the sun begins to set in the twilight hours and creates a colourful natural spectacle in the sky, it is clear why Lake Naivasha has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful of all the lakes in Kenya's Rift Valley.

NPM-DVD-134 - In addition to their scenic beauty both Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo contain some of the most fascinating biotopes in the Great Rift Valley, a nine thousand kilometre long fissure in the Earth's surface extends from the Lebanon to Mozambique and then across Kenya in East Africa. The Great Rift Valley originated around two hundred million years ago and the volcanic activity in the region is still active. Twenty kilometres north of Marigat is Lake Baringo, a unique biotope. The crystal-like surface of the lake fascinates in so many ways. Due to its abundance of fresh water Lake Baringo is an important habitat for numerous plants and wildlife. The purity of the lakes plays a vital role in creating the wonderful vegetation that is to be found in this region and the idyllic landscape around Lake Baringo boasts an impressive variety of vegetation and more than four hundred different species make Lake Baringo one of the most popular bird spotting areas in Kenya. The legendary Lake Bogoria is situated almost a thousand metres above sea level and is well known for its large numbers of flamingos which are a breathtaking sight. The famous geologist and scientist, John Walter Gregory, praised the spectacle of these flamingos as, "The most fascinating sight in Africa". However, despite such praise Lake Bogoria is still more a place for an interested few rather than those who are keen to explore Kenya's more popular tourist destinations. The pink flamingo can grow to a height of one point fifty metres and is mainly monogamous. How it can distinguish its partner from the other birds of the huge colony is an enigma! These elegant water birds are not only loyal partners they also take great pride in their appearance as each flamingo spends much of the day tending to its beautiful feathers. It must now only be a matter of time until both lakes in the north of the Great Rift Valley attract more tourists who will seek out the fascinating delights of these remarkable natural reserves. Until then both Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria will remain an untouched paradise for the wildlife that graces their shores.

Buying land here in Kenya usually is quite a hassle. If you don't know anyone personal you have a big change of being ripped of, no matter if you're a mzungu (white man) or a local. My girlfriend got in touch with the councilor of the Gilgil region through a friend and after her first visit to the region and it's beautiful Lake Elmenteita she couldn't do anything but buying two acres of land right next to the lake.I finally got a change to go see it and after a beautiful one and a half trip from Nairobi, passing the Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha we met regional councilor Ngugi who took us in a more suitable car around the area and to the lake. Ride along, enjoy the nyama choma and the hot springs and discover the beauty of this hidden secret...This film is made by Bram Vergeer from the Holland based InSideOut Foundation. 7DY-DVD-163 - Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and is located slightly south of the Equator. Its large variety of nature is overwhelming and includes the Serengeti and Selous Nature Reserves, the snow-covered Kilimanjaro and the spice island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. It is a country of superlatives that originated in 1964 as a result of the union of two independent countries, Tanganika and Zanzibar. On the slopes of Meru and Kilimanjaro, coffee, maize, bananas and vegetables are grownand then offered for sale at various markets. Due to its fertile volcanic soil the entire region has been used for agriculture since the middle of the nineteenth century by both the Arusha Massai and Meru tribes. The Arusha National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Africa and its green forests are a perfect playground for the countless monkeys that live there. Around twenty million years ago its landscape was created due to volcanic activity and wonderful craters were formed as well as impressive volcanic cones. The swampy forest on the slopes of the Rift Valley features more than thirty different varieties of tree, an impressive area that offers distant views across fascinating and untouched nature and for the many wealthy tourists who spend their money in the region there are various special locations that provide excellent accommodation. The origins of the Selous Game Reserve date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. Later, under British rule, they were united into a large protected area. Tanzania is a natural paradise that is still known by only a few. An exotic country and one that is still waiting to be explored!

7DY-DVD-102 - Kenya, 'Kingdom of the Golden Sun' and home of the safari, is one of the world's most fascinating tourist destinations, with its amazing contrasts of jungle, desert, water, snow-covered peaks and green hills.Nairobi features several leisure parks plus the National Museum which offers a good overview of the country's history. The Carnivore Restaurant is also worth a visit and features the many varieties of meat that are to be found in Kenya, cooked to perfection! One of the many lakes in The Great Rift Valley is Lake Naivasha, on the shores of which Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness, and her cubs, for the film, 'Born Free'. Lake Nakuru is home to countless thousands of birds and British ornithologist Peter Scott referred to it as 'The largest ornithological spectacle on Earth'. Lake Bogoria is favoured by tens of thousands of pink flamingos, attracted to the many kinds of algae created by the lake's mineral content. The animal-rich Masai Mara, what could be glibly described as 'Hollywood's idea of Africa', is home to the tall and proud Masai people who live in small villages known as, Kraals. It also accommodates the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. Crocodiles and hippos also lurk. At the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro is the Amboseli National Park, it's savannah not only abundant with elephant, but also a spacious backdrop for the spectacular Masai Mara game reserve...just one part of the kaleidoscope that is Kenya.
